I have seen the other E Body prototype, a 1978 Oldsmobile Toronado XSR, with the same power T tops, but never knew an Eldorado with the same feature existed! This car simply drips and oozes class and luxury. Gorgeous car in a beautiful color scheme. Have always loved two tone paint treatments.

This had to be one of the most excessive, wasteful, overdone, and bloated automobile ever made. And I just love it! What a remarkable automobile - yes, America, we once built actual cars that had two doors, a trunk, and a hood and we went down the road in complete comfort. You could see over these cars - through these cars at stoplights to see the lights changing, and you could ride in complete comfort with no road noise. Those days as as long gone as the era of the Dusenberg. Lou, your channel is such a treat - you are a passionate advocate for automobiles. You have such fun and you share it with us. I cannot thank you enough for all of the work you do bringing us this video historical archive of fine cars from the near beginning of automobilia to the present. You are a treasure to the automotive world and I thank you for your efforts!

I don't know if you ever had a chance to ride in the backseat of one of those eldorado's but let me tell you that was the most comfortable car I've ever been in my life I'm 59 years old now my dad's best friend bought one of those brand new 78 eldorado barrettes the white with the red and white interior sunroof fully loaded and we used to go places Union meetings and stuff my dad was a union delegate and I would ride in the backseat of that El Dorado and talk about cushy leather God I've never rode in something to smooth and soft as that car did? Those seats were so buttery soft it was unbelievable the leather was just like soft as a baby's butt as they say LOL

@loucostabile I might be incorrect Lou, I just Google it. I remember it had the 500 engine Google said the 1976 was the last year for the 500. That's more realistic too. Because I remember the father buying it a few years before I graduated. So that would have made it 1975 or 1976 model year 🤔

Over that past 3 years I have had two white 78 Biarritz's, 3 yellow 78 ones and a brown one and several base Eldorado's. Only one had the CB 8 track radio with that repeater on the antenna. That I kept when I got rid of them. If anyone is interested it is for sale. Now about the Tops that is just two cool, I would love to actually be in one to see how much head room it has. It would bee cool since they retract just like the astro roof does.

Beautiful Cadillac. Love those T-tops...I had manual t-tops in my 1981 Z-28. It was a bit of a pain to take on and off. I did it a few times...and then after that...not somuch. Great colors here. The seats look so comfortable. Definitely a good example of a 1970's Cadillac. The best part was the view of it driving away. Really Cool!

That's an interesting piece of history. I have a feeling it would have been tough fitting that type of system into the '79 Eldorado, since it was just wide enough for 3 people. The '71-'78 had so much extra width that the bulge in the center of the headliner wouldn't hit either the driver or passenger, who probably had more clearance above than they did with the standard coupe, though I suspect a center passenger would have had to duck. Glad to see this car so well preserved.

Hey Lou... great car. One rather picky little item that I didn't hear you didn't: the lights in the fenders were LEDs that also monitored the headlights as well as turn signals. The rear exterior lights also had similar monitoring with LEDs over the back seat in the ceiling which could be seen in the rear view mirror. In a way it was sort of gimmicky but my dad had a 78 Buick Electra that had these lights. The upside of these were that any lights that were not working the driver could see immediately before being stopped by a highway patrol citing the absence of clear, fully functioning lighting. I realize that as a prototype and the incredible mechanism to operate the T-top the rear LEDs might not have been used. These were also a monitoring device for what my mom would have called "Old men with a hat" that would leave the turn signals on for miles.

My brother had a mid 70's 4-dr. in the mid 90's. I think he paid $350. My elderly neighbor had a tan Chevette. Never liked tan cars after seeing that color. In 1998 a new car dealer's used car section I sat behind the wheel of one of these Elderado. I felt like there was an air craft carrier in front of me. I had at the time a 1966 "SS" Impala Convertible, and previously sold my daily driver 1966 Chrysler 300 and before that a 1967 Galaxie 500. All big cars, with shorter hoods.

Ahoy big bro Lou!!!! Ah matey, ya got me with this one (as usual, big brother🤪!!)-you 100% have a stowaway in this big beautiful boat of a Daddy Caddy and he is KNOCKED OUT 😵😵in the backseat, man-as you can clearly see in the rear view mirror, big bro-head back, eyes closed, mouth gaping wide open through his big graying moustache, his balding head bouncing against the leather center backseat, his limp stocking calves and feet stretched out between you guys and his stocking feet pressing against the dashboard a bit-100% JV Johnny the "knocked out former JV baseball jock"-as per my branding, Lou! At 148 lbs. an easy one shoulder carry over a guy's shoulder, too lol 🤣😜. A TOTAL Robin, and now in his mid 50's. Steve's collection of cars is indeed awesome and epic, man. And unique, so unique-these power T-tops indeed put a car that is over the top into the disco stratosphere!! Indeed, all it needs is a shiny disco ball in the center of the T-tops, spinning as Donna Summer, the Bee Gee's and ABBA blast through the speakers. What a beautiful, fun 'n fined whale of a boat! Thanks big bro! JV Johnny ⚾⚾

About the time these cars were built, I recall seeing a large ASC facility on La Cienega Blvd in Los Angeles....

If ever there was a rare Cadillac, Steve Plunkett has it, and Lou got it on camera. i wonder what the price of this gem would have been back in '78. Lou, just out of curiosity, what is in that collection that isn't worth showing? Thanks!

Hi Raz, Happy to share this rare Cadillac with you :-) Hmmm, not sure what this would have cost in 1978, or the value now. You're welcome, Lou

They don't do T-tops anymore for a reason - over time they don't fit as tight, so they end up squeaking/rattling/ leaking, I know from experience. I'm sure the Cadillac service departments were glad they decided not to do these - would've been a nightmare.

Riding around San Francisco in Dad's '76 Eldo I realized that you couldn't see through the intersections going up Hyde Street or any hill street. Pedestrians beware of Cadillacs!

These Eldos are fit for pimps. Better looking is 1967 and the gen that became smaller in 1979.

I have one of these with the same paint scheme but not the t-tops. My car has only 26 original Miles! Not 26k, but 000,026 miles!!! Unfortunately, my father did not store his properly. If you have interest in purchasing and restoring this, please message me.

No need for an interior color and fabric selection book now. Black only - like it or not. $48k the average price of a new vehicle today and no or maybe 2 interior colors to choose from. It’s all about “the bottom line”.

Too much of a jumbo land yacht for my taste. FWIW, my first car was a base model 1980 Ford Fiesta - crude but fun and agile, 6+ ft shorter.
