Sometimes the toy images used on the packaging of toys use images of early prototype versions of the toys. And that's what happened with Kenners Six Million Dollar Man action figure. A few images were released showing a different version than what we all got to play with. So today I am going to try and make my own version of this Prototype Steve Austin doll.
He needs a new chest logo, different trouser fixings, updated bionic chips, and a chrome plated engine block.

The beauty of using the thread through the existing seam is that it not only makes the pants fit again, but it doesn't disturb or remove the original elastic at all, even if it's given out. Also completely removable, and that's as grade-A as customizing a vintage item can get.

This is a toy that well and truly needs a reissue. With nostalgia riding an unprecedented high, with even Mego coming back strong, it's time they did it.

I have a great idea for this, but it's DIY. There are sixth scale sites where you can buy a body. You'd probably have to make your own chips/ chip ports. (If you're truly insane/ inspired/ etc- Phicen/ TB League sells silicone bodies with metal skeletons- cut to fit) I think the bionics would need updating as well. No stupid robot parts slapped on an arm type thing, tho. I am thinking someone would want that completely robot part all exposed and stuff, so off the shelf components (think Anakin's arm, for example) would do the trick. A head would need to be custom made. I'd say a resin printer for that end of things. One can get 3d programs that would help with sculpting a head to their liking. I have a regular 3D printer. Looked into the resin ones, went "ewww". If I went this route, it'd be a custom job I'd send out for. If you continue the DIY route, a scan of the original head from the Mego version would be a good start, unless you gots them talents. Clothes? Grab a sewing machine. Shoes? Raid the Barbie aisle in the store. Engine block? *cranks up that damn 3d printer again* As for that bionic eye.... You'll have to really work at it, but the mechanics of a peephole in a door would be a start to look into. That may need to modified to hell and back again. I'm the same lunatic who has a Kenner R2, no plans, saw the video on how to make them, and I'm currently (slowly) struggling to make a custom set for mine, once I get done retrobrighting a really yellow front. I'm even considering a custom 3rd leg to plug into the bottom (magnets).

I really enjoyed watching this video. 6MDM was my last favorite toy of the Ancient Era before Star Wars hit (Yup, I'm that old!). It's always fun to see you take these treasured items in new directions. I remember doing a crude electroplating experiment for a high school science project. The book I got it from was even more ancient, probably 50s- or 60s-era. This makes me want to try it again, if I can find the right battery. Thanks for all your great work, Dave!

I think you should paint the white details on his sneakers. As you can see on the picture, it is clearly hand-painted, with the laces neatly defined. This detail would be a lot more beneficial than the red socks to make it look like the prototype. 😉

I was lucky enough to receive one of the very first Six Million Dollar Man action figures for Christmas 1975 which also happens to be my birthday.It was very different to later figures.The left arm was attached to the body,the tracksuit was nylon with elasticated cuffs,not very hard wearing at all,and the box was like the Kenner version where you could see through eye in the packaging with a large cardboard flap at the side but it had Denys Fisher branding.I didn’t know such a thing existed at the time and can still recall my excitement upon opening it,never matched I think.

Love this version of Steve Austin. It looks to me like in the prototype photo version, the drawstring isn't around the top of his trousers, but rather around the bottom of his jacket. I think this trick for creating a drawstring around the waistband of the trousers is good for making garments with deteriorated elastic usable, however, and you could even use it for clothing that isn't styled to be athletic wear, and simply tuck the ends of the strings inside out of sight.
@toypolloi
@toypolloi 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell from the photo. Could be either and I preferred it on the trousers. Would be easy enough to do the same on the top.

You are right, drawstring is around the bottom of the jacket, you can clearly see the knot and that is pulled around the bottom of the jacket so the jacket would fit him better

It does look like the jacket on the toy in the picture fits a little closer to the body, they may have done both a string drawstring for both pants and jacket and it may have been for the picture only just to make everything seem really fitted. The 6milliondollar man jacket does not seem tailored to the doll very well on the actual release.
