I frequently see comments talking about how EVs aren't the future because you constantly need to queue just to recharge your vehicle. And that sounds like it would be a pretty serious obstacle to widespread EV adoption. Yet that's not my experience at all. So to find out what's really going on, stick around as Dave Takes It On.

Agree with you Dave. What I did on my first really long drive in my MG4 from East of England to Cornwall recently , was charge when I stopped not stop to charge. So for example on the journey when we stopped for lunch I plugged in for around 30mins ( actually filled the battery rather more than I wanted just under 90%, ). Then a little later for a toilet break I plugged in again ( probably about 10mins), etc. Now my wife and I were going on holiday ( our destination had a charger), I wasn’t sure how busy the chargers would be so had plenty of contingency ( with other chargers planned if I needed them), but all no effort at all. The only time I saw a queue was when I needed to charge on the way back ( one of the chargers -Ionity- was out of order) only leaving five working, I didn’t need to queue but several cars arrived after me and did need to wait, one I think waited just a couple of minutes ( a Tesla3), the remaining two in the queue when I left had probably waited ten minutes.

In 2 years of EV driving and virtually always public charging, I have only had to wait once ..and that was only 10 minutes. I never charge more than 30 minutes. Last week, for the first time, I had a pair of chargers not working and just moved on 5 minutes to the next set.

Drive that boat over here to the US. Where the so-called alleged "charging stations" have no "cables" to charge with, because they've all been cut off and stolen. You can sit there for a month or two waiting for someone to come and screw in some new cables.

The only issue I’ve had so far was a multi-storey in Lincoln. Chargers were either full or blocked by ICE cars. Walked round the town a bit, went back and found I could move my car into a free charging space. Was there for a concert. Went back to the car about 6 hrs later and it’s the only time I’ve had a full 100% charge. Ready for the journey home. My local charge points are always empty.

Hi Dave, You have 200 mile range (you said) and need to do a 300 mile journey (this was scenario you set)? You don't want to arrive at a charger without enough range to continue to next charger so 30 miles? To complete your journey you need to add 100 miles (plus the 30 mile buffer? Same as don't arrive at charger having to charge). if you want to charge in a single stop, you need to be able to add 130 mile, which would mean you need to be at 30 mile current when you start to charge, since you would be at 160 mile when you complete the charge (which is 80% of your 200 mile range). Each of your restrictions seem fine individually but put together mean for a 300 mile journey in a car with 200 mile range, you either need to plan to stop after 170 miles or plan to have 2 stops.

I think you’re missing the point here. An overnight charge in a Tesla will provide in excess of 200 miles of range. So there’s plenty of buffer to do the initial 200 miles of the 300 mile trip.

@@huggyuk I'm missing the point? on the example Dave gave, I have no idea what his car's range is, he said 200 miles, I assumed that to be the range his car has (is that not what he said?). My point in general is if you need to add x number of miles of range during a journey, you need to have done not only x number of miles prior to charging but x + 20% of your car's range, because you (Dave) is restricting charging to only 80% for higher speed charging. When deciding should I stop to charge, I/he needs to also consider if I can easily reach the charger after the next one, otherwise I'm forcing myself into the 'I need to stop' at the next station situation, which he says I should not do.

Tebay was chaos this afternoon. All 12 supercharges in use and another 12 Teslas parked all over the place waiting to charge and more cars constantly coming in. Nobody knew who was in front of who. Car said to navigate to a less busy supercharger but the closest was Scotch Corner that also had queues. The rest were well out of range. If you are restricted on when you can do the journey you don’t have the freedom of waiting until it’s quiet. It’s a crazy situation that will put people off driving EVs on long road trips, not helped by a lack of queuing management / planning which is sorely needed.

I'll be out and about Sheffield soon and had a fiasco at the IKEA in the middle of the day two years ago. My strategy last year allowed using a larger Gridserve set up on the motorway back up, and then a Lancashire hop before tackling Shap again. The hills and motorways take a toll on the battery but I hope even now, that things are upgraded sufficiently, to allow relaxation.

Dave thanks for all your videos and info! We just did a trip towing a caravan with a Polestar 2 up to the Lake District from South Kent stopping at Clumber Park for a couple of days on the way there and back. Charging had to be planned carefully because towing cuts the available miles by approx. 50% (same with previous ICE car), and we needed to use A1 and A66. The lack of signage for caravan parking, and having to unhitch and rehitch is another story. However, on the way up north from South Kent the only real problem was Peterborough services. We had a 30 minute wait for a charger - 6 x 350kW Ionity chargers - all bays full and we were no.3 in the queue when we arrived. So a 30 minute stop became an hour stop plus the unhitch and hitch. The people charging their cars obviously hadn't been watching your KZbin videos! Most were charging to 100%, and a lot didn't keep an eye on their app. to find out when they were fully charged., so fully charged cars were sitting in the bays blocking other users. On the way back South a week later, there was no problem, but it was mid-morning as opposed to mid to late afternoon on the way north. The other really busy chargers were at Booths in Keswick - fastest chargers in the area (6 x 120kW Instavolt) - we used them once and used "granny charger" through caravan at the caravan site the other time we needed to charge.

Massive queue at the charger, then I remembered it was my car parked at home charging for free off our solar!!!. Rarely seen a queue and I cannot remember the last time we had to queue, could have been back in 2014 when all the ecotricity chargers were running on free vend. Now if you want to see a real queue sit outside a Tesco or Morrisons petrol station when there's a penny or two off, round the block usually !. I believe Trafford is very busy but never used it

Although I totally agree that planned stops without waiting are exactly what we should be doing, there IS a difference between stopping after 100 miles and 150/200 miles. That difference is charging speed! You can get optimal speeds if you are < 20% battery rather than 40% battery at start. So it needs a bit more finesse than you are saying...

Very much depends on the car I think. If you only have a 180 mile range then adding 100 definitely needs planning. If you have 300 mile range then to add another 100 you can pretty much stop anywhere below 50% and it’ll charge up ok while you do the business and have a coffee. I used to have a 58kWh Ioniq 5 with no battery heater, and in the winter oh did that those some management to charge on rapids - you had to be deep enough (below 10%) that it could get enough heat in the battery to get the temperature past 15° to open up faster charging over 25% if you didn’t manage that it would limp along at 20kW Going 10-90 was quicker than 50-80. But extreme case. My last 250 mile journey was a rented polestar 2 and I just stuck that on charge at melt coffee break and it was over 90% when I finished up. Didn’t really have to think about it. Which is nice.

There's always a queue at Scotch Corner Supercharger on the A1, and quite a few queues at Harrogate, especially at the weekend.

The super charger at Leicester Fosse Park often had queues about 1 year ago. Since I left Leicester about 8 months ago the situation may have improved as there was a dearth of other fast chargers in the area. Now there are quite large charging hubs at three of the other retail/food parks. Still no fast chargers at the M1 services though.

We are all different and have different circumstances, you may well not have queued and have a lot of flexibility. But many of us don't have that flexibility and have queued. Not for very long in my case but it happens at peak times. Ionity Stafford or Leeds are the one's I often have to wait a few minutes, not long but sometimes 5/10min.

I agree, charging Queues aren't a problem yet, these is simply a problem with planning journeys. There is however a problem with your logic, if you have 200 miles range and are making a 300 mile journey, stopping at 100 miles would mean charging to 100%. I would start looking at 140 miles, that way the target charge is not over 80%. This is another example of a planning problem.

At MOTO Exeter at around 1130 on Saturday 15th June I was unable to charge my LEAF immediately as I cannot use every charge bay, (ChaMeDo) . There were two spare Gridserve bays and over a dozen Tesla. After a vist to the Toilets, we came back and moved onto a then spare bay to charge, Yes I had a 10 minute queue, NOT due to lack of spaces, just down to the fact that my car needs an older standard point. I had driven from Bodmin, and filled up to 81%. giving me a projected range to just get me home to Havant, 130 miles. I have a fall back plan of Gridserve at Rownhams Eastbound, 26 miles from home. As it turned out, due to restricted traffic speeds on busy roads, I arrived home with nearly 30 miles to spare. I do ask that drivers faced with a choice of charge points use only the bay for their cars first to give us drivers of older cars a chance!

I'm heading to Skye this summer. There are no hubs and the only chargers are Charge Place Scotland ones which have poor reliability. Looking at Zap Map there seems very few chargers still working and are around 30 miles apart. The few chargers that do exist are slow destination chargers

Every time I went to the Metairie, La SC there was a 5-10 minute wait. (It was the only SC near New Orleans) That was a little over a year ago. A new SC opened in New Orleans a few months later. Electrify America usually only has 4 chargers per location and is prone to having lines in some locations.

Oxford Welcome Break Services on the M40 (NOT using the Tesla supercharger, which is Tesla vehicles only). Every single time I've stopped there attempting to charge there has been a minimum of a queue of 2. Don't get me wrong I love my electric car, but for those of us still driving a Hyundai Ioniq 28kWh, even though it does do over 5 miles per kWh routinely, you can't always just rely on being able to go another 20 miles to the next charger.

This is a tough challenge, as the only places I have ever queued in my 35000 miles and 1.5yrs of MG4 EV driving are Tesla Trafford Centre, Grenta Green Ionity and Tesla Tottenham and in the case of the Tesla sites I was first in the queue and only queued once at each and the Ionity site at Gretna I have never used since as it's awkward to use and there are better places to use en route to and from Scotland. But there are regular queues for fuel pumps at my local BP and Esso fuel stations because people do their shopping at the station and block the pumps. You can come and video those if you like.

In my first 11 months owning a Mod3 I've done a dozen or more longer road trips and stopped to charge on 39 occasions at times from early morning to late at night and SC locations from Portsmouth to Cardiff to Fort William and many points in between. Never ever had to wait. Closest we got was Tebay, Saturday lunchtime in the Easter holidays, nav was telling me 5 mins wait, but as we arrived there were 2 stalls empty. When we left 35 mins later, less than half were taken. Most times SC locations are less than half full, quite often they are completely empty.

People who 'HAVE' to queue have not planned their journey. It's no different to queueing at a petrol station as you don't have enough fuel to travel to another one. The A55 in North Wales has minimal rapid charging along its route and is a reflection of North and mid-Wales as a whole.' On a recent trip back home from Bangor, we stopped at Kimmel Park East services (which has only 2 EVpoint rapid chargers and 1 fast charger in each direction) and found that one charger was out of service and the other 2 were in use. We had plenty of charge left, so continued on the A55 to St Asaph, where we stopped at a pub approx. 200 metres off the junction and used their Osprey (2 50kW devices). 10 mins later (our Ioniq has a max charging speed of around 43kW) we were topped up enough to get back home to Chester.

I live in North Carolina in the US and installed a level two charger at home about a month ago that I've never used because my VW gets free charging at Electrify America stations. Even though a lot of their stations only have four chargers I've never had a problem charging while traveling. Worst case if I couldn't there are always paid charging stations available. Since I've owned the car just over three months I've probably spent less than $10 on charging. My previous vehicle cost between 60 and $70 to fill up which I normally did at least once or twice per week. Love the channel Dave.

You can't really apply this if you need to go far and charge 4-5 times on the way there. You keep some margin to go to the next charger, but that's it. However, this is only speculation from my part since I have never ever charged anywhere but at home :oD. Only this year have I replaced the main petrol car and haven't tried yet on a long journey ... but I am prepared ... I think.

Hi Dave, agree entirely. I’ve just road-tripped across Europe to Norway, 3weeks around scenic routes (4-5k miles) mega place. No queues at any of main or most remote Tesla SCs in any country. Only queue I’ve ever seen was at non-Tesla chargers in Lake District (awful I moved swiftly on) Tesla had range to do so.

I have an EV coming in September, but for now, still on petrol. I am always envious of the amount of free EV charger parking spaces there are. My local Sainsbury's recently converted all of the "Parent & Child" spaces which I used, to EV charging spaces - I now have to park in the more contested spaces. I am sure it is down to location - I am in London and it seems that EV infrastructure is ramping up big time. Even my local restaurant has 2 Tesla chargers and my mother in law has a Tesla so always asks to have lunch there when she visits!

Tesla app tells you where the queues are, take a look, then plan to arrive there when the queues exist. Then come back and explain why it's a good thing to keep suggesting everyone, including the cars taking two (or three) bays should all pile on Tesla Superchargers. I've queued (unexpectedly) at Winchester. I disagree on the charging advice on a roadtrip. Tesla satnav literally wants to plan to arrive with low SoC and expects to charge. Constantly overriding the choice and stopping prematurely defeats the otherwise excellent routing.

In Finland, I have seen all charging points reserved only within the city. There has always been space at the charging stations along the highways - sometimes I am the only charger. It seems that there are already quite enough charging stations.

1-2 years ago, there were queues at every charging place I visited in the country. No longer. Called a Banbury last Sunday and every Tesla was full. Constantly. Strangely, as always,not one car using Osprey…….

It’s an unsustainable business model. Most chargers are in use less than 2 to 4 hours a day. These are all being built to harvest government subsidies. Yes there are peak time queues for at holiday trips. It’s why range is important to most people even though they don’t need range for 80% of their journeys.

This is similar to when petrol stations were being rolled out...we had thousands of them everywhere..in time became untenable and most closed to what we have now. EV chargers will go the same route, once either targets are met, batteries/efficiency improve to not need any stops and also the perception of range anxiety eases

@@PandaPeru batterry technology and efficiency has only improved 10% in the last 10 years. 3.5 to 3.8miles per kWh is the current progress. Li on batterry tech is baked in for the next 20 years.

Its more like 99.9% of journeys, The average motorist travels around 10k miles a year or 200 miles a week, only does a long journey once or twice a year.

@@PandaPeru that’s because overtime fuel tank sizes and efficiency increased from the 8 gallon tank and 24 mpg 1970s cortina to the 12 gallon tank fitted in the both the sierra and mondeo ending with the nearly 600 mile range of a modern diesel with a 12 gallon tank. 7 minutes to add 600 miles is why fuel stations are reduced.

We were at Charnock Richard southbound only a few days ago and there was a queue. We were blocked by a Tesla so once we had taken care of our personal needs we gave our place to a family with a young baby and decided to drive on. We juiced up at Sandbach where there are more chargers. I observe that southbound services on the M6 appear to have far fewer chargers than northbound. Very unbalanced and illogical.

Hi Dave, In an ICE car, refuelling, I get to a petrol station and the queue is obvious. The entrance is designed to act as a queue when required. Where/how should you queue for an EV charger?

It tells you on the cars system/ whatever app you are using normally so you don't even need to pull off the motorway if there are not stalls available.

When you charge, does make a difference. Your car will charge very much quicker if you charge from a lower state of charge. Topping your battery up to whichever you preferred maximum, is best done on a destination charger, or at home.

It is important to know that charging to 80% on the Teslas is around 25 minutes from 10%. On a long trip I will be at 100% leaving home, but there is no point stopping unless I am below 50%. I agree with you that if one is full, I would much prefer to move to the next one if it is available nearby. Most people will not be running their EV down to the bottom very often, so if they charge to 80% it is likely less than the 25 minutes, so turnover will be quick, freeing up charges without a long wait, even at busy times. Other thing to remember is that Tesla charge over stay charges and this does encourage drivers to move on when the car is charged. I must admit though, that like you when I have driven over 150 miles I am ready for food and drink. This will take longer than my Tesla does to reach 80% so at least it can top up past that and allow me to finish my food!!

Last end of May Bank holiday I did my first ever EV Road trip from the Southern Highlands to Harrogate and back charged at Carlisle IONITY southbound arriving with 48% SOC and topped up to 80% - this was the Thursday afternoon 4pm, me and 2 other EVs charging, 12 plugs. Next day drove on to Harrogate stopped at Scotch Corner to look - not even half the plugs in use at lunchtime, I didn’t need to charge on expensive Gridserve. Arrived in Harrogate way too early to check into my hotel so went to the new EV Point on Wetherby Road at the new Starbucks - only 4 CCS2 cables and I was expecting a queue as it’s cheaper charging and it was time that folks were heading away from the Everything Electric Show - I had the place to myself for 10 minutes before a Vauxhall Mokka E arrived to top up. I charged to 80%. On the Sunday I headed back north, never bothered to look in at Scitch Corner and drove straight to Carlisle IONITY and again at 1pm 12 hoses, 3 other cars charging, no queue, 18 minutes from 40% to 80% and I was on my way north again to home. Total cost was £61 on w public charger sessions and in total 1 hour of charging. No charging queues on either the M6 or A1M over that Bank Holiday weekend. I suspect if I had followed the in car charging advice to charge at Gretna Services it might have been different, maybe I was “first time lucky” too!

The chargers at that starbucks are rarely used. Go past very often. Most pop into Sainsburys at showground entrance. The Tesla charges @ Pannal are often busy as only 5 type 3 stalls & plenty of Tesla's in the area.

In 5 years of EV ownership I have never had to queue to charge and I live in a flat, so only use public chargers. I do an average mileage so only have to charge once a week.

It happens in gasstations to, to busy and have to wait for 10 minutes. So I will pass that station and go to a different one.

Picking charging location is easy when you've got an EV with plenty of range to spare. I have to charge every 150-200km in summer so there might not be many options and/or very few stalls (2-6). I also refuse to use the expensive blood sucking CPOs unless there is no alternative to reach my destination. In summer with the amount of EVs we have in Norway these days queues are bound to happen. Some of the busy sites along main routes do get upgrades slowly over the years to add more or faster chargers. Charging while eating for me with an EV with a small battery is a challenge. I'd be at 100% in 40 minutes if DC charging, and some CPOs have a blocking fee >80% SoC. Finding AC chargers nearby is almost impossible.

I think the challenge for we poor non tesla owners is that the live usage displays for public chargers is really poor and so is the in-car interface (in my experience at least). It’s really not obvious where chargers are, how many are available (and how many are BROKEN, Looking at you gridserve and Ionity) so making these decisions is difficult and takes many button presses when I should be concentrating on driving. Apple Maps just will not show you high powered chargers along the route and let you filter by availability which would be a game changer. Any suggestions welcome.

I hate to say it but you made your own best suggestion in your first few words. Should have got a Tesla 😂 This was one of the key reasons I went with a Model 3, that and price. I actually look forward to really long road trips now partly because I get a sad little thrill knowing just how effortless the en route charging will be. It always makes me grin.

4pm makes me laugh a bit. I have hit a few that have been almost full at 3:45pm, and at 4:15pm they are all clear... the reason? Contractors don't want to go and start a new job at 3:30pm, so they go and charge instead.

You should read the comments on EV articles in the Daily Fail. They alternate between 1) All the chargers are full and massive queues 2) They are all empty and no one is using them 3) They are all broken 4) They all charge 80p plus. Take your pick, you’ll get every one of these every time!

I sincerely believe Dave's desire for validation (in the form of channel metrics) is a greater motivation than a sense of integrity. I feel quite strongly about the impact of falsehoods on people's wellbeing. I cannot control this, but I can encourage viewers to develop skepticism and critical thinking skills. Remember Dave, nobody wants EVs and nobody drives them. Therefore no queues at chargers. At the same time every charger has massive queues because of all the EVs charging. At least one of these statements has to be false, but it’s actually both of them.

Here, in France, I have waited 3 times in totally. Firstly for 5 mins. Secondly couldn't charge because 2 ice vehicles were parked in the charging bays and lastly had to wait whilst a petrol tanker was waiting to get to the tanks and blocking the charging bays in the process.

If I charge 100 miles into a journey, adding 100 miles of range, it means I need to charge back to 100% which we all know is the slowest way to charge. If I drive 200 miles and add stop to add 100 miles, it will be MUCH quicker. Sometimes, there aren't any options to 'drive to the next charger ' when you end up in a charging desert.

Too many new adopters haven’t learnt to aim off to a different charger earlier or later in their trip. They just blindly follow the nav. I personally try to avoid any chargers that are not V3 or V4. I have 15000 free miles to use up as a gift from Tesla so I charge when out and about when I can.

“Hands up, that’s one that needs additional chargers”. Totally wrong. If it’s only busy at peak periods, they don’t need extra chargers - they just need less idiots insisting on charging there at that time. As you say, pick yor place and time when it won’t be so busy. Fairly simple but too difficult for a lot of people. If I might need extra charge to get home, I actually set the possible charging time (turning off route, stopping, charging and getting back on route) against the charge remaining and distance to destination. If driving a little slower will get me home and that does not impinge (too much) on total journey time, I drive slower, thus avoiding paying public charger rates as well. Being retired makes a difference to choices, mind. I am rarely in a rush, these days🙂
