These instructional videos are fantastic. Just saw the one on Euler's identity and loved it. Really broke down the process and showed what happened without all the detail about Taylor series, hidden powers of i etc you see in other videos. Even an utterly non-mathematical person could get something out of your videos - which is great. You gently guide even the novice through the process with patience, relatability, and humour even though your own knowledge is so far beyond this simple idea. An excellent channel. Please keep it up!

Wait. Is that titanium white? I thought i'd be calcium white. lol
@GeorgeSPAMTindle
@GeorgeSPAMTindle 4 жыл бұрын
Blackboard Chalk is now manufactured using Titanium Dioxide, rather than calcium, so she is correct in using the term 'Titanium White'. As a metallurgist it really annoys me that most people do not pronounce the word Titanium correctly. Titanium is named after the Greek God 'Titan', and the ending of 'ium' is used to indicate that an element is a metal, although Iron only uses the 'um' part for Ferrum, leading to the category of Ferrous metals. Titanium is commonly pronounced 'Ti - Tanium' or 'Tit - anium', but as it is not named after either 'Ti' or 'Tit' these pronunciations are wrong. The correct pronunciation is 'Titan - ium', but it doesn't roll off the tongue particularly easily.

To the best of my knowledge, spiders have exoskeletons, which means their skeletons are on the outside of their bodies. Also, the skeletons are quite rigid, otherwise they would not do their jobs as skeletons. Add these two things together and you get an animal that must, if it wants to grow, shed it's skin every now and then. Most (maybe all) animals with exoskeletons have to do the same in order to grow. For one reason or another, snakes also shed their skins, although I wouldn't describe their "skin" as hard.

A good friend of mine was once the sub-editor of a Nuclear Physics magazine. One of his duties was to deal with all the would-be mathematicians who wrote in claiming they had disproved Newton's and Einstein's theories. Many times, they had pulled this same stunt - dividing by zero, somewhere in the midst of 6 pages of calculations. His task was then to write back and tell them what idiots they were, but of course dressed up in terms like "thank you for your interest", or "so nice that you thought of us when presenting your analysis". The magazine paid him well, so he didn't mind doing it.

Other than division by zero, another thing to watch out for in equations is square root. E.g. (n+1)^2 = n^2 . You do square root on both sides and you end up with the faulty equation n+1=n. But in fact, (n+1)^2 = n^2 does have a solution, and it is n = -0.5. But to arrive at that solution, you need to take into account that a square root can be both positive or negative (e.g. square root of 9 is 3 or -3). For an equation like the above, you need to do the square root like this: n+1 = -n, or -(n+1) = n. That is, have one side positive and one side negative, and that will give you the solution n = -0.5. But if both sides are positive or both negative, the equation will yield no solution. That might be a great idea for a video.

The main reason why you got 1=2 is had already considered at the beginning that a=b. So this is more of a consideration that 1=2. But in real life if don’t consider a=b , then it won’t be possible. I love your story videos. Great concept "The box of shame.' I will have to use that when I attend my math class! :P Don't worry, I'll send you your royalites whenever I use it! I've bene watching your videos a lot over the past couple of days. It's helping to teach me new things in math and refresh my memory during the school break. I attend a math calss at a lieracty center. I started rigtht from the absolute basics, and I've moved onto geometry, doing some algebra and my working on my own interests mathematically along the way. Thanks for the inspiration!

Returning viewer, watched off and on for 3+ years now. Loved the video, learned I need a refresher on basic algebra. I failed the challenge but it was fun trying.

My algebra instructor told me there was a proof for 1=2 but I needed a higher degree to understand it. You explained it very well.

"And there I stood alone and afraid "I dropped to my knees and there I prayed "And I promised Him everything I could give "If only He would make the music live "And He promised it would live once more "But this time one would equal four "And in five years four had come to mourn "And the music was reborn" - Don McLean, American Pie 1 can never equal 2. That's impossible. Except to say that 2 inches equals 5.08 centimeters, but there's a conversion formula for that. We need to relearn number theory, as a society. So we don't end up making 1=2, as it never will. Your algebra was illegal, because you subtracted out a similar term, and unbalanced the equation. The equality has to be equal the whole time, for it to work. We used to know that... it was the whole premise of my High School Education. I think the Internet made people braindead. You have a great channel, this is a qualm I have with the internet, that it's literally making people forget some of the most basic things. Ah good, everything is restored. Some people try to make that point, these days. It's a strange world we live in. I don't know... I was taught the equation has to always be equal, hence the term equation. You see where you reduced it, it's no longer equal. In fact, in language that's how we have knowledge, too, is when empirical facts start equating, or things in the real world start being described. Like Geometry. Not many people relate math back to geometry, but that's where our entire knowledge of number and algebra comes from, is studying shapes, and deriving axioms of logic around it. And in fact, the evidence for the Bible does this very well, in archeology, ethics and also psychology.

4:49, I haven't seen the whole video yet, but I think I know why its mistaken, The order of operations, the squears should always be made first then the multiplication, for example: b² - ab = 2b² - 2ab ab - ab = 2ab - 2ab 0 = 0 yes this is correct because both are equal to 0 but when you factor them you got to make sure you do the things in the parenthesis first,, since the parentesis are not really numbers but just algebra you can do the multiplication and you rever back to reality which is b² - ab = 2b² - 2ab, by that logic you could replace all the 2 for any number you want to say that one is equal it's not really.
