This video demonstrates how to do a provisional cast on, using the crochet cast on. This provisional cast on uses the crochet cast on differently than the standard crochet cast on provisional cast on. Rather than "unzipping" the cast on to recapture sts, the cast on is done so that it creates a build-in lifeline.
This method has a number of advantages aside from having a built-in lifeline (which is pretty cool). It produces the same number of sts regardless of which direction you're working, so no need to compensate for being off by one stitch. You can use the project yarn or waste yarn to create the PCO.
