This was the best provisional cast on tutorial I have seen. I think I like the method where the crochet hook and needle are parallel. But....as you said, I reserve the right to change my mind based on the project at hand. Thank you!!!

So great having all of these ways. I used to pass by patterns that say provisional cast on. Now it doesn't scare me as much but unzipping is still a struggle. This will help.

This is a fantastic tutorial! Thank you SO much for showing several ways to do a provisional cast-on. It's good to have alternatives. You are a very good instructor -- clear, concise, and you don't babble on with unimportant nonsense. The lifeline idea is really good. It's nice to know there's a way to make sure you won't lose any stitches when you take out the provisional yarn. Love you, Laura Nelkin!

Another great tutorial video! Again more techniques I get to learn! Puts a big smile on my face :-) like many I only used the first traditional crochet cast on. Also I always had to count my stitches after taking the provisional cast on out as I never knew if I needed an extra stitch or not. So, the explanation about a half stitch at each end is a big help and now I know what to do and know I will not need to count stitches! Thank you sooooo much!

That's fantastic. I always thought I was doing something wrong because of the extra half stitch/disappearing stitch. Such a relief to know it's just the way it is.

Very helpful. Thank you! I used a provisional caston at the bottom of the body of a fair isle hat and it really worked out well. I was able to try on the finished upper part and pinch the excess fabric to get an accurate number of stitches to decrease for great fit for the band.

This is fantastic! I never realized you could cast the stitches directly onto the knitting needle (I've always made the crochet chain first and then tried to pick up stitches later and been annoyed). Also the lifeline is brilliant! And what timing! I'm working on the sleeve of my NovelT sweater now and I think one of the next steps is to add stitches with a crochet cast on! Thank you!!!

What a great video! Very clear instructions. I love the cast on with the cable. I love my interchangeable needles and this would be great, the stitches are already on the cable! Could you do a follow up video about provisional cast on in the round? How to start and then pick up the stitches?
@LauraNelkin4 жыл бұрын
Oh, that's a great idea! But it isn't hard! I would do your provisional cast on for the number of sts your pattern calls for, then work one row with your working yarn. Then, don't turn your work, but place a marker and then continue, joining into the round.

Seems like an under-utilized technique. Allows options for later. I am using it in-the-round for a hat brim I want turned up and sewn on the inside. Maybe a way to avoid grafting (hate grafting) on one of those long symmetrical stoles where each half is worked from the middle out. Worth a try... Nice video. Thanks!

Thankyou for this video, the three techniques were great to see, the project I am about to embark on requires a provisional cast on, one question for my project will be knitting with 2 strands of DK through out, do I need to have a similar weight of scrap yarn for the cast on ( I’ve been told cotton is good for this as it doesn’t catch your working yarn when unzipping) ?

Question : I am a tight crochetor and knitter when it comes to casting on . I was wonder if the crochet hook needs to be bigger than the knitting needle ? if So how many sizes larger dose the the crochet hook need to be ? Is the a bind of method that will mimic this provisional cast on ?
@LauraNelkin2 жыл бұрын
I think if you know you crochet more tightly then it totally makes sense to go up a size or two hook... that way you'll have an easier time going into those stitches!

I don’t believe you’re counting right. You don’t have a knitted row until you actually knit into the stitches you made with your working yarn. Remember you’ll be removing the crochet chain, so you can’t count those bumps as stitches, they won’t be there.
