I have to be “that guy”. There are currently four trains (rolling stock) and five engines. Most of Retlaw 1 (100) was traded off except the car that became the Lilly Belle. Retlaw 2 (now Holiday Red (200)) is rarely used. They are usually running The Excursion (300) Holidays Green (400) and Blue (500). The history of the engines and the trains is fascinating, like the fact that engine 3 (Fred Gurley) was originally built in 1894. It’s 127 years old and still chugging along at Disneyland.

The sidings were once functional. When Disneyland first opened, there were two trains, but they stopped at different stations. The passenger train only stopped at Main Street Station. There was a freight train also, but it only stopped at Frontierland Station. Each station had a siding so that one train could pass while the other was loading. Ollie Johnston had a miniature train, but Ward Kimball's was the real thing, a narrow gauge engine named the Emma Nevada.

The Ward Kimball, bc " he loves trains". Whoa, you missed ALOT there. Ward was so instrumental in artistic and mechanical matters influencing Disney and Disneyland, he was a mentor of sort to Walt. Fun fact , the DL train was the very first attraction I ever rode/experienced in '72 as a youngster.

My favorite part of the ride is the masterful use of "go away green" when you approach the New Orleans station. Your eyes are so directed to the Mardi Gras equipment that you don't even notice the big, 3 story green building with a big green staircase and a big green vent.

Every time I ride the railroad I use my pocket flashlight to light up those posters so everyone on my car gets to see them.

Trains honk 1 for Stop, 2 for Go (forward), and 3 for Back (reverse). The train industry adopted this standard because it was easy to remember (like "Stop! Go back."). Trains also honk 2 longs, 1 short and 1 long (dash, dash, dot, dash) when approaching an intersection or crossing. This is the Morse Code letter Q and was adopted from England. Back when the Queen traveled by boat, the boat with the queen on board would blast Morse Code Q on the horn to announce this to other ships in the harbor to get them out of the way. When the queen switched to traveling by rail, they followed the same tradition. If you hear a really long horn blast, it either means there is someone on the track ahead they are trying to scare off, or there is an emergency (usually because the train can't stop). In either case, get the heck out of the way! The next time you're around passenger or freight trains, listen for these horn sequences.

Great info in this video. Although, @9:09 the Lilly Belle is not a caboose per se, although it is traditionally coupled on the back end of the train. It represents what a First Class Observation car may have looked like on a mainline railroad. There is a rear observation platform on the backend.

This has to be one of my top favorite videos so far from my favorite Disney KZbinr! My favorite fact that Teacher Chris taught me was that 2 of the trains were bought and shipped to Disneyland and that was so interesting. I knew before Walt had a love for trains and thanks for sharing deep information about it as I want to become a Disney historian as well. I am so amazed with your puns Chris.

Once I was heading to the old Hunchback of Notre Dame show at the theater by Big Thunder Ranch. There was a gate near the back of the theater, but not AT the back of the theater so you went through the gate and then walked 100 feet or so along the train tracks to get to the theater itself, and I took that shortcut to get there one day. And then I saw a train coming, and didn't want the guests to see me and spoil their illusion of riding through the wilderness, so I ducked down behind the doghouse so they wouldn't see me. The engineers saw me, but I don't think any guests did. And I didn't try that shortcut again after that.

Locomotive no. 5 wasn't actually built for Disneyland (2:48), it was originally built in the early 1900's (well before WW1) for a plantation in the southern US, then Disney finally bought it around the early 2000's so they could afford to send a locomotive away for restoration and still be able to run 4 trains at a time on the busiest of days.

Love the Disneyland railroad! When I was little my dad would always have us take the Grand Circle Tour before we rode anything else & Now I try to do it every trip! I had no idea about the invisible posters or that light up map in Main Street station. Plus the jokes in this were fantastic 🤣

A correction to the Lilly Belle car. This is a parlor car and not a caboose. If memory serves correctly, this was the Grand Canyon (106) observation car originally. Later converted to the current parlor car we see today. The caboose (208) was part of the original car set CK Holliday pulled as part of the freight car set. Those cars were converted to the current side facing Holiday Red (200 series) we still ride on today.

You are correct about the Lilly Belle Parlor Car and the rest of the passenger consist or as it was called the Retlaw 1(Walter spelled backward) passenger train was taken in trade to the Pacific Coast Railroad for a Vulcan locomotive which was originally slated to become the No. 5 Ward Kimball. Unfortunately the Vulcan wouldn't work on the layout in Anaheim and wasn't strong enough for the grade and heavier cars in Florida so they traded it to Cedar Fair for the Maud L. Baldwin locomotive which is now the No. 5 Ward Kimball at Disneyland.

Facing towards the locomotive is facing forward. Facing the scenery going by is facing to the side. The whistle pattern at all railroad crossings is 2 longs, 1 short, and 1 long.

One thing worth noting is that Ward Kimball had two operational narrow gauge steam locomotives with a selection of train cars. His railroad was called the Grizzly Flats Railroad and the engines were called Emma Nevada (1881 Baldwin built 2-6-0 from the Nevada Central) and the Chloe (1907 Baldwin built 0-4-2T from the Waimanalo Sugar Plantation). When Walt decided to build the parks he tried to purchase the engines from Ward to pull the trains. Ward said no, but allowed Walt to run his engines.

My best friends dad was a conductor for the Santa Fe Railroad which at the time gave free passage to he and his family. In the early days of Disneyland riders needed tickets to board the train. Not us, the free travel extended even to the Santa Fe train at the Disney Park.

Original locomotives CK Holliday (#1) and EP Ripley (#2) are of the scale 5/8ths of full size. Which ends up working perfect for the 3 ft gauge of the track; also US standard narrow gauge. The other 3 engines are technically full size, though run on the 3 ft gauge. The car sets are also scaled down from full size. Lastly, the WDWRR is a narrow gauge railroad and it’s locomotives are full size (aka 12 inch to 1 foot… model railroader joke), so technically these too could run on the DLRR, though they may be a bit too long for some of the radii on the curves.

At approximately 3:39 you say that 4 of the trains face forward and only 1 faces the engine. That means all 5 face the engine since the engine is forword, a.k.a. At the front of the train.

Yes back when railroads were first put into use (horse drawn carts on rails) whomever was building it put the rails at widths that worked for what they could build or that the space allowed. in England there are some 2 ft 8 inch gauge tracks, but the standard railroad that we see now is 4ft 8.5 inches. any rails close than that are called narrow gauge.

Love the video and love the Disneyland trains. Here's some info for everyone; 1. Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. Disneyland sends all its used cooking oil to a refinery that converts it to biodiesel. Because of this, the Disneyland locomotive exhaust smells a little like french fries. 2. The Lilly Belle isn't a caboose, it's a Parlor Car or Private car. There is one other train that does have a true caboose.

Ward Kimball’s backyard train was a narrow-gauge train! He had around 900 ‘ of track. Side note: after Walt finished filming “So Dear To My Heart”, he gave the movie’s train station to Ward. Since it was a facade, Ward spent $40,000 turning it into a real building. When Walt was building Disneyland he asked Ward for it back. Ward told him , “hell no”. He did give Walt the blueprints. So the New Orleans station is a copy of Ward’s station, which is a 3D rendition of the movie building..

It's not an exact copy--they added double doors on the front and back for guest access, and also doors on the sides, of course, for guests to enter the "bull pens."

But one thing that you didn't mention relates to the New Orleans Square station. We all know that the morse code taps out the opening day speech. But the more interesting item, I think, about this station is that that little station where the morse code is played used to be part of the queue for that station. The track originally ran on the other side of that station and the queue went through that station building.

Standard "narrow gauge" in the United States is 3 feet (rail width) Standard gauge (is 4ft 8 1'2 inches) same width as Roman chariot wheels. "BIg Boy" Is in Houston, Texas right now. It's the largest operating steam locomotive! Built in 1944 (Wonder If Walt ever saw it?) I'm a former RR engineer 4 6Flags. Most non Dis. parks ran their engines clockwise like Dis. In 1974 6Flags Texas ran counter clockwise (every other year) It wears the flanges more evenly. Oh! I had a "trainmendous" time watching this video!!!

Taking the "Indiana" dog fact even further, George Lucas' personal dog was named Indiana and inspired the name of Indiana Jones. In "The Last Crusade", the dog joke was added as a nod to the original Indiana! As a bonus fact - Indiana Jones was actually first called Indiana Smith. Chris. Very good. A few things. I would question. First frank had a ride on train at his house but Ward had a full size railroad in his yard. Walt originally ask ward to use his locomotive. Ward said no. Wards equipment is at OERM. The railroad and I think the monorail were owned by Walt and got paid directly by him at first. The Lilly belle is not a caboose. It’s a private car. The dinosaurs came from the Ford exhibit at the 64 worlds fair.

Disneyland had A 2nd train running around the park so the second track at main street station was used so the 2nd train could by pass the trains primarily meant for a round trip around Disneyland.
