Dark Souls 1 has always been my favorite too. People always look at me like I'm taking crazy pills when I say this. Best atmosphere, best exploration, and hot take! But I actually like the slow combat a lot! I admit DS3 has the best bosses overall, but DS1 is still the best complete package IMO. Also when people say the 2nd half of Dark Souls is bad, I think that's a massive exaggeration, because I only think the 2 lava areas are bad, which probably make up like less than a third of the game. I actually liked the Duke's Archives, and Anor Londo is GOATed, which counts as the 2nd half of the game I think. It's a pretty late area. The snow painted world was mid tho, but I wouldn't call it bad. So only underwhelming areas IMO are 2 lava area's and snow area(which is super optional hidden area anyway).

Dark Souls 1 should get a remake(that's more than just visuals) that fixes up Lost Izalith and changes some lacking areas and add back in cut and unused content.

Dark Souls 1 and some of 2 bosses demanded player to use timing, have patience and strategize, and find righ opportunity to strike. Like Bell Gargoyles, Ornstein and Smough, Three Sentinels, Moonlight Butterfly etc. And the world design, atmosphere, level design and character design, ost are best too. The boss fights after ds2 went in completely different direction.

So having anor londo in the kingdom of Lothric and saying its there just because time is convoluted is just kinda dumb in my opinion. I like the idea of time crumbling because of how many times the cycle has been repeated but it causes the game to have zero identity of its own. Im not upset about how they tied up the trilogy with ds3 but stuff like anor londo is just kinda silly to me

@smoothyodaproductions4373 Anor London isn't in Lothric, though. It's a great distance away from it, in the same place it was in DS1. The surroundings have changed, but that's because it's been literally thousands of years. They never once use the "time is convoluted" thing to explain it. That's a DS2 thing. Also, they did give it a unique identity. DS3 shows how the world has crumbled, collapsed, decayed. It reintroduced Anor Londo, but as a ruined shadow of it's former self. It's an end-of-the-world scenario. A completely different aesthetic and theme.

In ds1 everything feels like it’s done for a reason. The world is gritty and the mechanics and lore reflect that. I enjoy the slow paced combat of ds1 just as much as the combat of the recent titles, just a different style. When it comes to ds3, I feel as though the game doesn’t really have any exceptional qualities. Is it polished? Yes. It’s a very well made game but nothing stands out. Out of the more modern fromsoft titles, ds3 is the weakest imo. I’d rather pick up and play elden ring or Sekiro over ds3.

1 is hands down my favourite because after playing through each game multiple times, I can always remember the entire world, enemies, bosses, and weapons of 1 whereas the other games I forget things or more accurately repress the memories (I'm looking at you ruin sentinels, what a shit boss lmao).

DS3 levels get so ganky and force you to kill a bunch of enemies every time you run through an area, which is frustrating because the areas are so bland and boring unlike 1 and even 2. The DS3 bosses are peak fromsoft IMO but getting to them is exhausting

I would really love and probably be a little obsessed with Dark Souls 1 because there's so much depth and nuance to the story and implications, the serpents might be trying to take over now the dragons and gods are dead, Ornstein and Smough are the hardest bosses because they're the new power in the world as the old gods are just shadows of what they were, the endings can be interpreted in multiple ways in a really complex political way, but then the sequels came out and swept all the nuance away and said this is definitely what happens next. So they literally ruined the really good story of the first one for me and so I've only played it once. Which is why I think people who want a sequel to Bloodborne or any SoulsBorne game are fucking idiots.

I think the series should have stuck to the metroidvania style level design of DS1 for sure. Also, the sequels were never really able recapture interesting moments like stumbling into ash lake for the first time or getting the special Sif cutscene. Plus I think bosses like the gargoyles, manus and gywn are a bit underrated.

I honestly completely agree . For me no other fromsoftware game managed to capture Dark Souls' magic . I think I like Bloodborne more as it has pretty good level design as well(not as good as Dark Souls ,but still) and great combat and bosses. I've completely accepted that there will be no experience like Dark Souls. The only game I've played that I think can clash with Dark Souls in terms of level design is Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Bloorborne and Sekiro are both perfect. Not without flaw but they're perfect. Dark souls 3 was the most fun for me out of the series. I haven't been able to finish dark souls 2 yet becacuse it feels so clunky and im not good. I've just recently started Dark Souls 1 and I really love the world design and atmosphere, but i keep going to the wrong places and it's kinda frustrating. That’s the thing though is the combat actually isn’t bad it just isn’t the new gen rolling, and now when I play I don’t even need the ring the game just functions differently then what is the standard in Elden ring and DS3. Additionally bloodbourne is the game that decided the aggressive fast paced gameplay which is why people that played dark souls first like it more. Game wasn’t supposed to be as fast paced and more methodically timed rolls. the souls series are full of opinions. Sekiro is the first one i played and i loved it. theres no such thing as “i AccIdEntlY oVerLEvelEd”. even if you have more hp and posture because of killing minibosses, everyone will be using the same build and the same damage at a boss. everytime i finnish a boss i feel so satisfies its insane. learning every move and how to counter it. like how when you see isshin walk slowly to your right he WILL do a thrust attack, or after gennichirou do a jump attack its either thrust of sweep (while its all thrust in phase 1), or for loneshadow (burning hirata estate) when he jump back he will call on wolves and can be interupted with projectile, etc etc. so i went to dark souls HOPING for that experience. i dont really care about exploration or anything like that as long as the bossfight is the highlight that i LEARN. and….meh most bosses i kill without actually learning it’s moveset. then i realise dark souls isnt that type of game. and the community judging every single decission you make is more annoying. - “you just feel its easy because you overlevelled it” - “oh you use (name of a good weapon), you have no right to judge this bossfight as easy” - “i cant believe you use summons” (this mostly elden ring) - “you levelled too much vigor” - “you use (name status ailment like bleed or frost or anything) this boss is weak to that. thats why you feel its easy” sometimes I wonder why fromsoft added too much of these stuffs when they know full well they suck at ballancing them.

Excellent clickbait, excellent video. I definitely disagree with you about the bosses. If you look at them as stepping stones toward what bosses would become in later Souls and Souls-like games from Fromsoft, they range from meh to good. But looking at Souls 1 on its own, I feel like most of the bosses cap off their respective levels really well. Of the “bad” bosses, I especially like Sif and Capra. I also sorta like the Bed of Chaos after many runs, but I won’t seethe and cope, I can acknowledge it’s an abysmal fight especially on a first run.

Dark souls 1 is the perfect example of 'a game doesnt have to be perfect to be perfect' Its seriously flawed, even with the remaster that fixed the port issues of PTDE, but its still an amazing game, much better than DS3 honestly. The only good thing about that are the boss fights, the rest of the game is just a bland surface level rehash of the original. It has never been recreated. The DS1 not letting you warp halfway through the game at least added so much to the sense of dread that you are stuck at places and you have to go back and then the shortcuts back to familiar places. Even since DS2 you can simple warp through bonfire. Even the precursor to it, Demon Souls had the 5 warping levels and warp between bonfire. DS1 will be my favorite Souls like no matter the modern iterations. I recently thought of something funny as I replay Elden Ring. Ok you can open the map and even warp without having to do it from bonfires. You can also use the horse to traverse vast areas (I almost never use it and like to take the hard root and get on foot and explore slowly). But do you remember that trap that surprised us where you open a chest early in some dungeon and it devours you and teleport to some cave in Caelid? It had that suspense of "OMG a trap, now I am in a far land, how the hell do I get back?". Till I escaped the cave, opened my map and teleported to familiar places. What's the point? Very anti-climatic.

Respectfully, Artorias is my least favourite boss (so far). I actually have no intention of completing the DLC because Artorias feels totally unfair. It feels like he has an infinite stamina bar, and his combos are too long. I had the same problem with Radahn in Elden ring base game (although I eventually got lucky and beat him). A big long combo is fine, as long as there's a cool down afterwards to punish, and they aren't doing it all the time... like Artorias and Radahn. Otherwise... where's the fun? Waterfowl Dance would be an example of what I think is fair - a crazy move, but used sparingly. Also Melania has loads of chance to punish after her attacks. Hard but fair. Yet people love Artorias and Radahn, I guess it just depends on your build and play style.

I am yet to be made believe that a game that leads so many people to an area they’re not supposed to go can be synonymous with good level design. What good is area connectivity if the game fails to communicate properly to the player? You kinda hit the nail on the head, basic hollow enemies in DS1 move like....well shambling corpses, they're not fast or strong and, can only really get you if you let yourself get cornered or, aren't paying attention to one on the upper levels throwing fire bombs, DS3 basic hollow enemies move like a Kyle, from Florida, juiced on every pre workout known to man, is it harder? Yes but, objectively it takes away from their frail, rotted, visual design, I think Elden Ring did a pretty good job at having basic enemies move like slow shambling zombies but, sprinkling in elite enemies to keep you on your toes

Unfortunatelly they can't do something like DS1 anymore with the very slow dumb zombies and slow strategic boss fights (which is something I prefer personally) because it would look very outdated, lame and non-epic since DS3/Bloodborne which is how many remember souls-like games.
