One thing in Dark Souls that I don't think people talk about enough is the Firelink Shrine music. At first, It feels homely and comforting. But near the end of the game, when almost all of the characters are dead, the music is depressing, and makes you feel lonely.

on the beginning, it felt extremely lonely but kinda warm, the fact that you're safe and this is probably the last safe place on a destroyed world. kinda like The Nexus from Demon's Souls. But the warmth gets colder and colder, after Anastacia dies and even the "dangerous places" are now only a minor trouble to your now overpowered character. So it's not the only safe haven and at the same time, the comfort disappears after everyone kinda dies.

@@draaavennoxus668 I mean, everyone is losing their minds in that world including you. Fact is, unless you install a mod to skip it all you're going to do what it takes to see the end of the game. As a player you want to get to the end of the storyline of the "Chosen Undead" everyone is telling you about because it's just sounds like a main character thing to be, "Chosen". So regardless of what anyone else in the game says or does, you're going to go through what you need to in order to get the ending you seek. We always have the option to just play around simply using the co-play options and there's the option to be that person that tries to stop anyone from continuing on the path of the "chosen" both by joining certain Covenants and simply just of your own volition for the fun of challenging yourself against something beyond an NPC. Of course, even the people that mainly want to co-op of pk will need to progress through the game in order to complete the builds they prefer. Playing a video game is just an inherently selfish action and the npc's suffer lol

@@wesleyscott1633 I can't remember which item description it is but one of them talks about how the bonfires are "direct links to the first flame". Also the actual fire coming off the bonfire in ds1 (not the remaster) is all weird and swirly, theoretically because it's not just a flame but the first flame specifically. Bonfires are also created by making piles of human bones (see the homeward bone description) and the Humanity within humans longs for the fire of the first flame so it's implied that the desire of the residual Humanity is what creates the bonfire/link to the first flame. It's also worth noting that in the description of the homeward miracle it says that the miracle is supposed to bring you to your Homeland, but when used by an undead brings you to the bonfire. This seems to imply that the bonfire is their home and it makes much more sense that it's their home because it's the closest connection to the First Flame that their Humanity longs for rather than just a random fire. It's not an explicit lore fact, but I'd argue it's implied pretty heavily

I thought maybe I can fire it up later and I walked outside the arena (which starts the dark ending) without knowing what would happen. Hesitating to sacrifice your soul leads to desire to usurp the power - everything makes sense.

Act man I am sad because my parents don’t allow darks souls anymore, they think it’s demonic, and they got rid of all my discs for it. But I bought dark souls two online and I secretly play it at night when my parents go to bed. That’s how much I love these games because I am willing to get in trouble just to play it. My parents are like certain npc”s who try to tell you that your journey is pointless and that you’ll never make it, but I will not go hollow I will keep playing it rather what anyone thinks about it. I love your videos act man and recently I have been a little uninterested about gaming but you inspire me to play again and again. I hope by some way that you are immortal and that you will never leave us this world needs you. Your smart, funny af, and you dissect games from the core to help us all understand the concept of gaming and maybe what we missed in the game. Love u so much merry Christmas.

My favourite Dark Souls 1 character arc has to be Big Hat Logan's. After having no more knowledge to spread and learn he goes out to Anor Londo and the Duke's Archives, where he starts looking for forbidden and forgotten sorceries. He never goes hollow. He went insane. An undead goes hollow if they lose their drive and purpose to move on, but Logan never lost his, he had so much choice in literature he tried to possess the knowledge of Seath the Scaleless, which drove him mad.

FUN FACT: Hidetaka Miyazaki-san was actually a huge fan of Gothic architecture, Fantasy, and especially Berserk. which definitely explains why Frampt looks like a Hagfish with a human face and skin mustache. And why a lot of the monsters are something of a nightmare in of themselves. Miyazaki apparently has great taste in Manga, since Sekiro was based off of Lone Wolf and Cub. Dude's got good taste. I do recommend checking out both Berserk and LW&C; they are Masterpieces.

I've played through Ds1, Ds3 and sekiro, and although they all have their moments of shining, I have yet to see a game as consistent as hollow knight in terms of level design, music, and sound design. Fromsoftware's games have some killer OSTs like Gwyn, Artorias, OnS, Soul of Cinder and Divine Dragon, but every single soundtrack in hollow knight is masterfully made and leaves an impact on the player. Also asides from DS1 none of fromsoftware's games have interconnected world design, and even in DS1 it was only for the first half of the game. The point im trying to make is that Hollow knight is probably the only game in the market, alongside Hades and Nioh that can fill the crater that's left after playing souls games.

Playing Elden Ring made me want to try out other souls games. I had to go where it all began and I'm so glad I did. The level design in Dark Souls 1 is out of this world. So many areas are connected to each other, and only through exploration provide shortcuts. Then they also throw in one of the coolest moments I've seen in a videogame - they let you return to the starting area after you might have assumed there is no way back there. I thought that area was just a tutorial (it was, but it's so much more!). To explain, you have to climb up the firelink shrine and literally sit in the crow's nest for 15 seconds and this will trigger a cut scene where the crow picks your character up and flies you back to the beginning of the game except now there are harder enemies and an extra boss. NOT only that but there is an item you can pick up (the peculiar doll) that will allow you to enter an ENTIRE new zone (Painted World of Ariamis) via Anor Londo. All of this is optional, but SO cool and rewarding to do. I can only imagine how exciting it must have been to be the first person to discover this. I'm sad and happy at the same time now because for so long I put off playing souls like games for whatever reason. But now that I finally caved when Elden Ring came out, an entire new world of games are open to me - Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and more.

It's a testament to both your homie and dark souls that such a cruel thing did not take the game away from you. In the way a bad break up can steal your favorite song. You should write the devs a letter. Seriously. I bet they'd really like to hear your story. I'm just a musician, which a different type of creation, but I love hearing how something I made helped someone though something hard. Artistic success can feel trivial on a bad day in a dark world, but hearing people's stories really helps me see the earth under my feet. I'm sure they'd feel the same way.

I think the best thing about the “dark lord” trope here is that it’s kinda reversed in a way. While the dark lord ending still is the “self serving” ending, it’s not just serving yourself, you’re serving your species. Humanity is essentially trapped as slaves to gods with the age of fire, so in a way the “dark lord” ending is actually the good ending.

but then they go back to nothing. They were only really thriving during the age of fire. But at some level, it is akin to ripping off a bandaid. The age of fire would come to an end no matter what, and prolonging it could do more harm then good. But on the other hand, perseverance is what gives life meaning. The need to continue and fight onto another day is displayed throughout the game, and if you choose the lord of darkness ending, then you have gone back on everything so far.

Words can't describe how much I love Dark Souls, but this video basically summed it up. Playing Dark Souls for the first time was like being in a strange dream that you never wanted to end. I never valued video games as art but after playing Dark Souls I did. I still remember playing Dark Souls for the first time. 1st hour: This game isn't that great, I don't understand why it is getting a ton of praise. After 1st bell of awakening: Hey you know what this game isn't that bad! I'll continue playing. After 2nd bell of awakening: Damn this game can be a real pain! But it's very rewarding and fun. After beating it: Dark Souls is the best game I ever played and is definitely one of the best games ever made.

Great, I got this game when it came out and played it for like 1 hour, gave up and forgot about it for a few months. I started playing again because I didn't have anything else to play and after a while I really started enjoying it. After that I played demon souls which I thought would be easy but boy was I wrong. It was even harder and unforgiving than dark souls but still a great experience. I never thought these games would get so much attention.

DS1 is basically the second coming of Ocarina of Time. The one thing that sucks is that you don't get to play Dark Souls the way it was in the 2010s, because a part of the game's design included the cultural environment is was released into. You just can't simulate watching VaatiVidya's earliest Prepare to Cry videos as it was in the 2010s when the community was still trying to piece together the lore without any of the context of Dark Souls 3. And the game was so unique back then too, because most RPGs were still using Assassins Creed and Diablo as their main reference point at that time. It's still a good game, but I regret that getting into it now you're kinda missing some of the best things about being a fan during that period.

I think the thing that blew me away the most about Dark Souls, was the discovery of Kaathe. This is a character that most people will never find on their own because of the criteria needed for him to spawn, but he has an absolutely monumental effect on how you percieve the story. If you never discovered him, you might never question why you are striving to prolong the age of fire. It seems like the obvious choice, but Kaathe turns it on it's head, and now you realize that your character is being manipulated, that Frampt is not being honest with you, and the implications of this are massive. You now realize that the Dark ending is NOT actually the "Bad" ending, rather it's grey. The whole game is grey. Nothing and no one in Lordran is entirely good or evil, and there are layers to this story that people have only discovered after dozens of playthroughs. To me Dark Souls is the pinnacle of video game storytelling. It could never work as a movie or a novel, because story is baked into the gameworld itself for the player to discover. There is absolutely nothing Arbitrary in this game. Every single item, every single corpse, every single enemy is meticulously placed in order to say something about the world. While item descriptions contain exposition, it's up to the player to observe the world and contextualize the information you have within the world, and interpret it based on your own experience, and I cannot overstate how much I love that. Granted as you said, all of this would fall apart if the game world itself wasn't as captivating as it is, but Dark Souls just had me aching to know what I will find beyond the next door.

If I stop playing my guy literally goes hollow and I pretty much failed. Went back on and after lot of deaths I cleared the skeletons and got a bad ass 2hand sword. Then I realized I could go up to undead berg and was breezing by with my new 2hand and everything clicked. I was getting destroyed cause I was under equipped and not knowing how the game played, got a huge upgrade by essentially “retaking” a fallen hollows weapon and now was making progress where I should of gone. Literally got me hooked so much And it’s crazy cause it was either make it or break it, but that moment were I cleared the grave I felt so good and unknowingly was rewarded for it too

Dark Souls is like a game of life. You got kicked out from your home and about to face the world for the first time. No direction on where to go, no money and a very few friends. It's a damn cruel world but you bravely fight through it, only to fail and start from the beginning over and over again. You become unhappy and frustrated. Then you asked yourself, is it worth my suffering? With a little strength you have left, you get yourself up. What's more to lose anyway? So you continue but you are now wiser than before. Everyday is like a battlefield and there's no easy road. Countless of failures but you keep your spirit high. Until one day you have completed your journey. Only to realized that all the hardship you have experienced made you into a warrior. And that the true happiness is not by completing the game itself but by overcoming all the adversities you have encountered in your journey.

What makes Dark Souls 1 in particular so awesome to the point of being a masterpiece is how it uses conventional and unconventional things in its design. Like there is nothing fancy or particular creative about having some knights, castles and dragons around. Pretty generic RPG stuff if you ask me. But what it does with these conventional ideas is another thing. Myazaki doesn't give a shit on what other RPG's have done over the years. He doesn't care if his game is designed to be finished in like 3 hours if you are good, or 100 if you suck and its your first playthrough. This man knowns how to design games in a way few developers have managed to do in the past or since. What appeals to me with this game is the gameplay. You have all your fancy stats, weapons, armor, spells, miracles, rings, all sorts of things in it and the best thing about most them is how fucking optional they all are. If you are good, you don't need a high level'd character. You could win the game with the stuff you start with if you want. The game doesn't hinder your progress with arbitrary things like grinding your gear to higher levels or getting better weapons to handle higher level'd foes or even require you to be a certain level to play a mission or get access to an area. Nah, everything has a set health pool, is weak and resistant to certain damage types and that's it. Nothing stops you going from A to B to C except your very own skill, personal interests in doing certain things and the very rarely appearing progress block because you need to do something. ( Which are honestly only 3 things. Ring the bells to reach Anor Londo. Get the Lord Vessel to fight the big four. Defeat the big four to reach the final boss). This kind of design is what I really love about this Franchise as a whole. Each other game after it made by From Soft has this genius design in regards to progress. These games truely feel like an adventure to me. The connection between gameplay mechanics and lore , the placements of items, the characters. The entire package is just amazing. This goes does not hold your hands and doesn't give you tutorials other than at the start of the game to explain what each button can do. What the game does though is to ask from the player to pay attention and if they do, they can even end up being rewarded and learn something. For example early on in the Undead Burg, you can encounter a dragon. He's optional to fight, but if you wanna defeat him, you might wanna use Lightning damage. He's weak to that. How could you know that though? Simple. If you watched the Intro, you learn that Dragons got defeated because of lightning. It would be logical to use lightning to defeat that thing. Second, there is a chest nearby that gives you Gold Resin, which gives you a temporarly lightning damage buff for your weapon. Put 1 and 1 together and there you go! I know a different example has been used in the video, but this basic aspect in the design where you need to pay attention to the lore, to learn something useful makes these games so amazing to me. And Dark Souls 1 does it the best in that regard. If there is any game I want to recommend to anyone, regardless of their preferences, it is Dark Souls and every game developer should look close to this franchise as a whole , see and understand what makes this series so beloved. It is not purely the difficulty, but the execution behind the challenge that is appealling, the way of storytelling, the use of music and love for details. There's a lot this game does right in its own unconventional way, which will make it such a timeless classic. Sorry for the long comment, but that franchise is something I have become very passionate about over the years. I'm glad that Dark Souls 3 isn't the last game and that From Soft will continue making their games with this sort of style.

+derultimativeOzzy I should point out before responding I don't consider it a masterpiece. 'pretty generic rpg stuff' Dark souls is neither an RPG nor does 'RPG' mean high medieval fantasy. You kind of just handwaved the 'generic rpg visual design' as you called it. 'best thing is how optional they are'...as they are in many other action games and consistently optional in RPGs. In a typical RPG the game will force you to specialize. 'you don't need a high level character to win, progress through level gates nor are you required to grind' true for many games and many actual rpgs, you seem to be conflating MMOs and rpgs which Dark souls isn't even. As is true for any typical action game in Dark souls you must complete one objective to get access to X new area. 'has this genius design' which as you've outlined it isn't unique and is quite generic. About the only unique thing here is that the game has so few 'official' objectives and is open world but you didn't really touch on that. It's typical for rpgs and some action games that a player who thinks and explores can gain advantages and for items to have narrative or 'lore' purpose. 'Every game developer should look close to this franchise' you've failed to outline a reason also different games require a different design. It wouldn't make sense to look to 'dark souls' when designing an RPG because it's a different type of game. Maybe you're too passionate about Dark souls, so much so that you're completely blind to what other games have and do accomplish.

I actually pretty sure that the dark ending IS the never-ending nothingness. Basically the fire brought disparity and with it LIFE. Whereas before there was only death and boringness. The cycle isn’t to be honored. I don’t like in ds3 that they basically retconned the power of the first flame. Before I could see the continual relinking in dark souls as a quasi- eternal life administering process. Maybe not the way it’s supposed to be but the way it CAN be and SHOULD be. It’s true that the natural state of matter is dead. Life is an anomaly. It’s precious and rare. Now that we have it we shouldn’t want to let it go. There is much to be enjoyed still!
@briancooley8777
@briancooley8777 3 жыл бұрын
Basically the cycle is not progress. Going back to the natural state is exactly that. Going backwards. Life and Order must keep moving forward. Afterall it’s breaking the cycle that leads to Nirvana right? Heaven is when the perpetual trap of life and death, good and evil, the ouroboros, is killed and all beings are allowed to have JUST life. JUST good. No more death. No more tears. Achieve completion. Peace 😌

@@briancooley8777 But it can be interpreted . The Age of Ancients "before the Flame" wasn't dark, precisely because there was no Flame to create disparity between light and dark. There was no death, because archdragons and archtrees were immortal, but at the same time not exactly alive. Also, we don't exactly know what Age of Dark would look like -- Untended Graves in DS3 is hypothesized to be a vision (?) of a world without Flame, but there is not enough information to be sure. There is a hypothesis, if you believe Kaathe, that tha Darksign and the Curse of the Undeath is not a sign of the Flame fading, but a curse bestowed by the Gods, maybe accidentally when Gwyn linked the Flame, or by design. Basically, in this interpretation the Prophecy, actions of Frampt and Gwyndolin, the illusion of Gwynevere etc. are a ruse intended to manipulate humans into linking the Flame, prolonging the Age of Fire and allowing Gods to keep the little power they still had. In the end, it's the question whether you believe that linking the Flame would save humans from going hollow, or is it just being a God's loyal dog.

@@briancooley8777 I think Ds3-- more specifically, the Ringed City-- did it well. The doesn't just fade, the world passes away into nothing. Which is, probably, what's going to happen to all of us. The Earth will be consumed by the Sun, the Sun will die out, and after billions, or even trillions of years, the universe will reach a total state of order and sameness. The new painted world gave an out to this inevitability, creating something entirely new instead of remaking the old. Dark Souls is over and done with. Now we wait for the next in line

Liquid Ocelot The reasons vary wildly, but they usually stem from not knowing how to deal with them. Some people would have trouble fighting the armored knights in a large arena with no cliffs. Now make the arena much more linear and add cliffs (that are easy to be knocked off of) and imagine how the previous group of players would do now. Some people struggle with finding windows to damage them. Some people try to make them fall off using an inconsistent method. The point being there's many reasons why players could struggle with the archers.

Just finished probably my 17th playthrough of this game. It'll always be my favorite of the franchise. As much as I enjoy Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and the others, none of them seem to be able to touch Dark Souls. The world is perfectly crafted, the combat is heavy, unforgiving, and forces you to commit to every attack, and the change in atmosphere from level to level is S-tier. Dark Souls achieved the level of immersion Demon's Souls did without breaking the world up into sections. Everything is connected. Dark Souls is absolutely a masterpiece of a game.
