As someone whose tried to envisage an open-world pokemon game, I have an appreciation for the pidgeys, ekans and horseas. You need a supporting cast, you know? You can put a bunch of pidgeys in a town, sat on power lines or pecking at food scraps, in a way that would be weird if they were all charizards instead.

I think people tend to forget that there's more to Pokemon than just battling and that it's got its own universe so you need the Pidgeys, Rattatas, Growlithes etc cause those are all the wildlife, pets etc...so yeah I too appreciate all the generic "trash" Pokemon cause they flesh out the world. That all being said I would love to rock into a town and just see 5-6 Charizards just chilling on some power lines staring everyone down.

Me too! I think that it having black pupils helps, neither of the others have black pupils and it looks worse to me, making Ivysaur look more aggressive or defined I guess. Also Venusar got rid of Ivysaur's markings, which were cool and added more color variety, for warts, and venusaur just looks more awkward overall.
