Really great, upbeat music. Makes the afternoons much more easy to get through. I imagine that a lot of people who listen to this are kicking up their collective heels and "cutting a rug" or two.

The Ted Weems Victor recordings are a nice example of audio evolution in the 1920s. Most of the sessions were made at the Camden, NJ studios, and the comparison with NY and Chicago recordings is often striking. And I don't know what they were smoking in California to produce such dull and tubby sound (both in Hollywood and Culver City) and it is only when one hears a Camden recording that a fair comparison can be made. My own explanation for the success of the New Jersey sound is the fact that the inventors of the equipment and process were "in-house", tweaking and refining real-time as Weems conducted his band -- and this especially included instrument placement. The high-level techs were immediately available to make any adjustments from start to finish in the record-making process. The depth and presence of these late 20s electric recordings are on par with Columbia's Viva-Tonal process, and often will surpass the dynamic range. As with all recordings made at this time, the results are hit-and-miss -- but when they get it right, one forgets that the year is 1928. If you listen to many of the Roger Wolfe Kahn and Leo Reisman Victors which were all recorded in NY, you'll notice less consistency -- they're often wooly sounding and have the characteristic blur that was typical of Victor in this period. But the Camden sessions rarely disappoint, and Ted Weems' complex charts were the perfect demonstration for electric recording. As always, for the audiophile aficionados, I recommend viewing my videos on the day after posting -- KZbin takes a good 24 hours until the soundtrack fully cures and is optimized.

It could come down to a number of factors - I was surprised too at the clarity of the recording, given its vintage. 1. The quality of equipment (Cali might not have had its stuff together like it did at the end of the 30s) 2. The quality of the studio - I do know at Abbey Road there is a studio where they are loathe to paint the walls for fear of changing the sound. 3. Quality of personnel - the engineer knowing where to place members in the room for best acoustics and how far from the mic. Agree with your assessment - shows how much recording had improved in the 1920s over the decade

Just to follow up, the original Western Electric system was a by-product of Bell Labs which was located in New Jersey. Maybe proximity plays a part here?

The Western Electric and RCA electrical recording systems changed the landscape of the recording industry. Theses albums sounds like mid 1930's in standard quality. I agree whatever the sound engineering's at Camden, New Jersey really brought out the colors of those Will Hudson arrangements for Ted Weems. I can't think of better sound quality records for the late 20's. Even some Paul Whitman records are hard to hear despite Whitman's outfit allegedly getting the very "best" studio's.

I must say after listening to this prized selection of the best dance music around my Paul Whiteman 78s are in danger of becoming obsolete. I’ve listened to Weems’ many 1920s hot records as part of my 78 rpm pursuits but never with the audible clarity as you have set out for us. Dare I ask you “how do you do it?” This is a grand presentation. I stayed on for the entire presentation last evening, not even taking a break. Kudos!!! And thank you.
