When I was 8 I watched my brother get blasted by a car while crossing a highway in Tijuana, shattered the windshield, buckled the hood, flew over 50ft... We just got back from our most recent Baja trip 30 years later in February. We'll all be fine, right?

1:37 Don't worry. Our mayor, Hou You Ih in his infinite wisdom decided a highway overpass needed to be built in front of my house in addition to the already EIGHT lanes that are in front of it. While doing this, he has competely closed the sidewalk, making it impossible to walk because god forbid we inconvenience cars in New Taipei City.

11:36 - surprisingly like Vietnam! Living here two years, I've come to think Vietnam and Taiwan have much more in common with each other than China, they both have a chill, freewheeling, almost too relaxed attitude. I'd agree with Lukas, sunburn is the most dangerous thing aside from traffic, pollution in Saigon is bad too sometimes. Food - Vietnamese is pretty good, tonnes of vegetables and I've never had food poisoning here, had it several times in China...

I believe the most dangerous aspect in Taiwan is the officials who live in Taiwan but constantly flatter China.🤣🤣
Taiwan Tugou (土狗) - y'know the ones, usually black and with a sickle tail, found everywhere in the countryside as strays and guard dogs - will nearly always back off if you pretend to pick something off the ground and act like you might throw it at them. It seems to be hardwired in their DNA. They are incredibly loyal and protective of their pack and/or owner, hence the big shouting game, but aren't generally prone to being irrationally or unpredictably physically aggressive. They're actually pretty wary, generally, despite the huge show. Just don't ever mess with their food when they're eating (although that goes for most dogs anyway) unless you really know that particular animal. They are absolutely amazing dogs to have as a companion - intelligent, energetic and loyal, and largely bulletproof. If anyone in Taiwan is looking to get a dog, I implore you to go to the local government pet rescue and get yourself one of these guys. There are so many 土狗 puppies every year that need homes. You'll also get a much better sense of how they operate, and all those strays and guard dogs become far less scary...
@Prozzie5 ай бұрын
Yeah I hear you but I still keep a very close eye on the strays when I'm in the countryside. You just never know when they decide to go nuts

Yeah it’s a bad idea to try to move the bowl with an unfamiliar dog. I know of even pet dogs who have food aggression. It’s something you have to slowly train out of or learn how to manage safely. The bleeding heart part of me wants to say go ahead and toss treats at the dog. No logic is in play with that advice haha I do feel bad about Taiwan’s very large feral dog problem. They face a lot of struggle, especially in some areas there’s a lot of illegal snares and they lose limbs from it. Maybe you can talk with animal rescue groups to get a sense of what can be done to both make it safer for dogs and humans. Packs of aggressive dogs are very dangerous. There’s been a few deaths where I live from it (it may be less “feral” and more people breeding for illegal dog fighting where I live)

Food is correct.. when we go back we love it as while we can get great Taiwanese food here in Vancouver, BC, Canada, there is something that is more when eating say at a mom and pop breakfast place at our small township, the fried chicken in a street stall, the savoury bakeries, the vegetarian choices, cafes, dessert places, the environment, etc... I did mention, I think it may be harder to eat healthier in Taiwan as most things you want to try.. for example, the glutinous rice cake made with savory fillings by a grandma sitting outside a traditional market on the pavement... best one I ever had in my life... went back and she is not there ;-(

Never touch or feed a dog that isn’t yours. It confuses the dog and how it reacts is unknown especially for dogs with actual owners it confuses the pack dynamic. A dog might be fine with someone it knows but if it doesn’t trust you’d it will lash out.
