What a beautiful, mournful whistle--tuned to a minor triad. Perfect for the gray, gloomy day. That sound inspired a thousand folk songs.

Such a beautiful example of a steam locomotive and a true shame that this engine only operated for 1 year of service before experiencing severe maintenance issues. PRR engine 1361 deserves another chance at an operating life, I wouldn't mind seeing this locomotive return to operation at some point during the future.

I may be a categorically insane railfan, but I still wish I knew more when it came to whistles. I know that certain locomotives have a distinctive whistle that makes them easily identifiable, but I don't know much besides that.
@dcoursey8214 жыл бұрын
@kd7tqn That's because the ashton and the pennsy whistles both sound the same minor chord...but in this vid, the whistle has that throaty/raspy sound that's uniquely pennsy.

This train came off the main line down by the A & P food store. Then up Rail Road Street over the Pig Hole Underpass. Right past the house where we lived as kids back in the early 60's. Trains used to go down the Bald Eagle Valley Rail Road every day back then. We used to put penny's on the rails & the trains used to squish them. Those were the days. The Pennsylvania Rail Road main line used to have all those smoky trains bellowing smoke for miles. Great Memories to see this one.

If you count passing by on the main line, technically RDG 2101/AFT 1, GTW 4070, & RDG 2102 all passed thru before this. 2102 was the most recent (and was the last steam locomotive to pass 1361 when she was still on display at Horseshoe Curve). Anyone asking what's up with 1361 can feel free to come visit the roundhouse on Thursdays after 3 pm. A small, dedicated group of people are working to put her back on the rails and grind the mistakes of the past to dust. No shortcuts, no BS, only 205 MAWP and full operation. They'd be happy to answer questions in person.

It is an A1 Class Peppercorn Pacific and was finally completed last year. you can see footage of its first fare paying passenger run on KZbin at this link: watch?v=qkkARP7PVVc

That would be something to see, considering that the only other surviving K4 (at least to my knowledge), #3750, is on static display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. I'm not sure if they could do it right now, though, since they're busy cosmetically restoring PRR Atlantic #460, known to most railfans as the engine which pulled the Lindbergh Special.
