I actually tried a large number of PRS guitars in 2 different shops. I tried mainly some SE Custom 24's and the USA made Custom 24's. With the SE versions I had 2 guitars that stood out from the others I tried. I then tried 4 of the USA versions and for the life of me I could not hear or feel a difference between those 4 guitars. It was like playing the same guitar. Basically those 4 USA guitars were just crazy consistent. Now I have heard people tell me that these guitars just don't have any.. . What's the word? Hmm... Mojo I guess, when it whispers to you, "buy me". I can relate to that, I think it's down to the fact that they are just too consistent. Any how, for me I had one SE Custom 24 Special Edition Exotic Wood (Zebrawood) that was screaming at me to buy it. For me the Korean version of the 15/85 PUPS had the edge for distortion and gain while the USA had the advantage with the clean (I never play clean lol). Feel, playability looks the USA version had it, but it was damn close. Yes. all in all the USA version was better, just about. But not over £2800 better. I bought the SE, looks and sounds great.

They’re both very good, honestly. I own several USA PRSs but I work on guitars for a living so I’ve seen SE models right on up to private stocks. Anyone who sees this…if you own an SE model, don’t feel like you’re playing a whack guitar AT ALL. Those guitars are professional grade…they stay in tune, most of them sound phenomenal and I’ve even played several SE 24s that rival my core CU24 in terms of playability. A core model is a legacy instrument, yes, but an SE is nothing to feel “lesser” about owning. Take comments like this one with a grain of salt, otherwise it’ll get in your head that you don’t have a “serious, big boy” guitar and that’s bullshit. PRS’s budget models still outclass about 90% of all the guitars I’ve seen over the years.

After viewing loads of PRS SE and core models, and not hearing a major difference between them. I came across a 2013 Korean made Custom 24 in charcoal grey with the birds on the neck. As it had three holes screwed into it for a GK3 Synth pickup (idiot, use the sticky pads) I got it at a steal, at least $200 less than other ones I'd seen. It also had a hard case so I done the deal. I filled the holes, colored and drop filled them, sanding them smooth. I felt the fingerboard edges a bit too abrupt so I rounded them off, perfect. after playing Les Pauls and Strats for many, many years, I wanted to see what this guitar could bring to the table. Firstly humbuckers, It's a good bit brighter than my Les Pauls, possibly because of the treble bleed capacitor fitted, not the same tone quality, missing the Gibson quack, really a bit generic. Think more Schecter, Ibanez etc! Split coils fare a good bit better, getting a reasonable Strat tone out of each and a nice Tele middle position. Where it falls down of course is Strat positions 2 and 4, everyone's favorites! Maybe a three humbucking pickup version with a five way switch and extra coil split would be the ultimate PRS. Check my video ;0)

It really depends on how the manufacturers have adapted, really. Talk about modern metal, metalcore, we have SIS (Specter, Ibanez, Schecter), and yeah, hands down the best if you're playing those two long term. I had an artist pack custom 24, back in 2001 But, I wanted the single cut, that was the time that gibson stopped them selling them. I stupidly sold all my other guitars, thinking it would replace them, but it didn't have the feel or vibe that I eventually missed, so I traded it back for a gibson les paul std. Fast forward 10 years or so, I had a quilted maple black cherry prs se 245, I put the pickups out of phase, sounded great, possible one of the best guitars I owned. I then stopped playing a few years later and sold everything.

Dagan I’ve got a player plus telecaster and am looking for something to go with it for heavier rock and metal tones. Do you think one of the custom SE models would foot the bill or maybe something like the Jim root jazzmaster or a shektar. I was thinking there would be more range with the customs. Gaaaargh so much choice🤘
