Great to see this little amp is still making big impressions. I found that changing out the valves for lower gain valves really improved the head room and tone on the clean channel and tamed the distortion channel as much as you possibly can in this “high gain” amp. But once again it’s showing it to be a lot more versatile than an amp for just mindlessly “chugging” away on. Disclaimer, I only is the clean channel as a general rule as I love the real tone of the amp and prefer to embellish what is already there with a few choice pedals.

@@without_a_spark9607 Hi Olaf, off the top of my head I spoke to Sean Littleton at PRS who agreed that I was good to swap out the V3 (Preamp - Lead 2nd and 3rd gain stage) for a 12AY7 and the V6 (Phase Inverter) for an 12AT7. I think the other valve I ordered was a 5751 (low gain 12AX7) which I think I put in V5 (the FX loop) but without opening the head up and looking inside I can,t recall at the moment. Hope this helps!? Also worth taking a look at the forums but I found PRS to be more than helpful with any questions I had and then it was just a case of experimenting by swapping them around

Play this amp out of a Two Rock cab. Start on the low power/7w mode. Volume and master dimed. Takes on a Soldano SLO style overdrive. Cleans are ridiculously punchy, articulate and dynamic! Same with the lead channel. Nails Warren Haynes tones with a Les Paul/335! Yet if you plug this into a cab loaded with Vintage 30s, you’ve got all the classic rock and metal tones you could ask for. Everytime I plug into it I’m blown away! Covers everything, and takes on different shades of tones depending on what cab and guitar set up you’re playing. Great video guys. Sounds like a great amp, btw what cab did you go through or was it direct into a DAW. I used to have a Laney GH50L which I loved and found some pedals where not great with it. One pedal I wanted to use with the Laney was a Pro Co Rat but it sounded bad. However the gain in the Laney was top notch so I just used it full on. Now the only amp I have now is a Trace Elliot Speed Twin H50 (Mk2 version), which I am sad to say I haven’t played it for a long time due to lack of space at home. You guys ever tried one or remember them from the mid/late 90s.? Mine has been 100% reliable, had it nearly 20 years and bought it when no one wanted them. I think it sounds great.

Great playing Paul! Nice sounding amp, weird they separated the Lead channel Volume from the rest of its controls, how weird and unergonomic! Agree about the LEDs looking tacky, makes it look like a kid's toy. Biasing vales on that amp is going to be easy - it's got the trim adjust right on the back - couldn't be easier unless they implemented some form of auto-biasing as Bugera Infinium amps have.
@martin-19652 жыл бұрын
Haha yes it does have that gaming computer thing going on. Only use I can think of is as a quick visual reference when at a distance from the amp to see what channel you are on but, if you've had that much to drink that you don't know in the first place, perhaps it's time to put down the guitar and have a nice lie down :)

My only question, is this amp built to last and is it rugged enough to stand up to giging and touring? Seems like it to me, and from what I've read it can be converted to 50 watts fairly easily
@jhmusic12 жыл бұрын
It can be converted to 50 watts but you need to replace the output transformer and redesign the power supply section to up the plate voltage to normal or "regular" 6L6 plate voltage which might call for replacing the power transformer as well. In my opinion, you really don't need to. The thing is extremely loud as is. As for durability, the thing is made completely out of metal and it's a pretty heavy amp for its size, right around 20 pounds, I'd say it's rugged enough to bring on the road

Very nice video. It would be great if you guys could share the pickups being used. I have tried this amp w more 'vintage' spec pickups, at loud volumes and the bottom end gets very flubby and mid scoop becomes even more evident - and as shown - it really does not like OD pedals all that much. I have had to back up gain to about 12 oclock turn bass down to about 8-9 oclock and mid and presence almost all the way up. Granted my ears are used to hearing a beautiful JTM45, so tone expectations are high. If you could let us know if those are BKP pups or some other 'better' brand I may try that route before selling the amp. Thank you!

Have owned/gigged with both, the MT15 obliterates the EVH LBX in terms of not farting out in the low end at high volumes and feeling like a high powered amp, like my 5150 blockletter
@davidmills16 Жыл бұрын
The hum can be significantly reduced by changing the tube in V5 (FX loop) with a 12AU7. It can also be further reduced and will also tame the gain if you replace the V3 (gain stage) tube with a 5751 and the V6 (phase inverter) tube with a 12AT7. Tonal perfection to my ears. And quiet .. 🤫
@rikpt Жыл бұрын
Replaced both V5 and V6 as you suggested, taken the whole amp down about 12dB, which makes the amp considerably more usable. Master volume knob is slightly less of a nightmare. Didn't mess with V3 as I didn't want to change the gain characteristics. Thanks for the recommendation!

@@TheHeroJourneys honestly I tried my Weber attenuator, but preferred the tube swap. The fact the attenuator is reducing the perceived noise is just it eating your higher frequencies. Don’t get me wrong, it works but 2 tubes cost £30/40.

Does anybody know if this Amp they demonstrated has the JJ5881 power tubes or the 6L6 tubes? This demo is so new I’m wondering if these are the new Power Tubes. Most of demos online are a few years old and definitely had the 6L6’s
@StompboxMods2 жыл бұрын
5881s have more clarity on the clean channel. A little less bass, with a little more treble mids. More airiness and liveliness in the tone. The lead channel, is roughly the same. I own two of these heads one with 6l6s and 5881s. They can roughly be dialed in the same. The 5881s enhance the clean tone for sure, and it adds a brilliance to the lead channel. I was skeptical at first, but I ended up loving the tone of the 5881s.
