That all Hoyas are equal. (Not all Hoyas grow in the tops on trees. Some grow in rocks, riverbanks.) Hoyas are succulents. Sun stressing. So many variables.

That any plant can thrive in little to no light. Nope plants need light and can take more than we think. Some can get by in low to almost no light (snake plants) but if you want it to grow give it light.

I don’t know if it’s because of my climate, but I don’t really follow advice/myths. My Hoyas are in direct sun (outside) and they get watered everyday (because the weather is really hot right now) and most of them are blooming with multiple peduncles. I have them in a mix really similar to my orchids’ soil mix. My firsts Hoyas straight up die because I was following internet advice/myths that were not necessarily good in my climate. Now, I research about the plants’ natural habitats before getting a plant instead of googling their requirements.

Needing light to bloom makes so much sense really. None of my Hoyas have ever bloomed but I have one baby cutting that just rooted and it has the tiniest peduncle. I didn’t even know that there was a myth about cutting Hoyas. I’m a forever propagation, and find the Hoyas a bit slower at times, but no more so then any woody stemmed plant, and on top of filling in the plant with props i find it makes the grow stronger as the refocus their energy into the main stems. Love this video, and seeing all the pretty Hoyas.

Thank you for talking about these hoya myths! I really struggled with hoya when I first got some because EVERYONE I spoke to and watched said to wait until the entire plant was wrinkled otherwise they'd die from rot. I didn't get any growth and of course, my plants were just sad 90% of the time. I ended up putting them all in water because, you guessed it, the roots were no more. It wasn't until I started to ferilise with LiquiDirt that I actually started to get growth in about two weeks. This was over a year of absolutely no growth until this point. After they rooted and started to push out a lot of growth I then switched them all to coco coir and perlite, something I was comfortable with. I only watered when the oldest leaves began to wrinkle before eventually realising they did better when I watered them even sooner. Now all of my hoyas are happy and healthy!

That's good that you've been able to figure it out for your Hoyas! There are a few that are easily overwatered but most of them do well with frequent watering, especially in PON or a very light and chunky mix that doesn't retain much water.

I recently acquired my mother's hoya. She had it since the mid 1960's. As far as I know, it has only bloomed maybe twice, so the myth that a plant has to be old to bloom I can say for a fact is just that, a myth. (she took a pic of the bloom and stuck it in the leaves of the plant, so it was always in 'bloom'!!) I am leaving her until spring to repot. I'm pretty sure the last time she repotted it (I'm guessing maybe 5 years ago), she just used regular potting soil.

This was delightful! I really appreciate the reassurance about direct light - I moved into an apartment with SO MANY south facing windows and trying to figure out what to put in them and how close and all that has been a journey. This year I'll be a little bit more adventurous and see how everybody does. Also your point about even cuttings putting out peduncles is very true - I have phuwensis that is two leaves and a dream, and I put it in a terrarium with lots of humidity and light and rather than more leaves it decided it wanted to throw out the longest, skinniest peduncle. I'm very proud of it, but I also want to ask it, "baby why?" It's ok to grow my dude!

Thanks for the information! I have been looking at my one stemmed, 7 leaved Hoya obavata side ways because it just put out it’s second peduncle this week. I have been thinking I must be on a different plane of reality because of everything I have seen or read about flowering is it is only “mature plants”. Now, it hasn’t bloomed yet, but I am certainly hoping for good things this year. Again, thank you for your information and love your quirky sense of humor.

I so agree about the root bound myth, the drying out and the indirect light. I never let them fully dry out, most definitely not until the leaves start to wrinkle. That's just a no no. And a lot of my Hoya love direct sun light. I put them out on the balcony for hours and most of them are just fine. They seem to love it. The only one that complained so far was the Wayetii, so I'm keeping it inside, but on the window sill. The rest are basking in direct sun light as often as I can carry them outside. But maybe the German sun is not as scorching as direct sun in other places.

Mine have bloomed in an east facing window or under my grow light. They are farther from the growlight than my hen and chicks but still pretty bright light. They turn a little red if they are too close and I just move them. I trim mine all the time or they will tip over from being so long. I never beleived the whole root bound thing. I just took that to mean they won't die from being root bound. I trim the roots when I freshen the soil up because only a certain size pit fits on my sill. Otherwise I would pot them up. They do like circulation. The roots are always right next to the terra cotta. I have a larger pot under my grow light that is getting nice and bushy.

Hi Betsy, some one of your other viewers probably already mentioned this, so forgive my potential repetitiveness. You may wish to research purchasing a water distiller vs. an RO. I live in a “forever in drought” state and had to pass on an RO due to its water waste (maybe this has changed since 100 years ago when I researched). I do not regret purchasing a distiller. Hoya, orchids and dracaena are so much happier. Also, the machine is pretty analog and I don’t have to futz with connectivity and difficult to swap filters. Most important, I give my cats distilled water. Kitty kidneys are their Achilles heel.

Love your videos and your personality, Betsy! I also appreciate the history and info you provide for your plants, particularly the hoyas! I am a newbie collector but wanted to ask you about your choice medium for hoyas. I have recently heard of PON and I see from this video you are rooting these hoyas in PON. Will you eventually repot to a chunky mix after they root in the PON? Growing pots in hydro or semi-hydro is a bit beyond my scope right now. I also somehow feel more stressed out when I think of the care that goes into maintaining hydro/semi-hydro. Just wanted to get your thoughts or experience about this. Thank you! 😊

Oh the re-potting! I ignore many "suggestions" , for example I grow my Hoyas in a soil mix, I propagate in soil with great success. I figure why put the plant through many transitions? Straight into the soil mix they go. I've heard that because Hoya grow in trees they don't need fertilizer... I fertilize monthly and I'm again having great success, I use fish emulsion and they love it! Full sun? Absolutely. I give my Hoyas as much sun as they can tolerate without damage. Most get dappled sun under a tree and I have found that an hour or three of sun is not a problem. And back to the potting. I have a Hoya surigaoensis, it was growing slowly and steadily and became top heavy. So I re-potted it and went up to a size that I had on hand (1 " pot to a 4" pot) this plant loved the change! It has grown huge leaves and multiple growth points. By the way, you inspire me. Love your videos.

Hi Betsey: This is my first time watching one of your Hoya videos since I recently was gifted a Hoya. I think I keep hearing you say the word “pon” but not sure what that is. Could you explain what that is to new viewers like myself? Also, would it be possible (to show on the screen) the name of the Hoya species you are talking about so we viewers can write it down, or take a screenshot, when we are out Hoya shopping. Thanks for all your information!

I'm curious why you said the only hoya you let fully dry out is your australis? My australis grows very fast however it seriously drops 8 out of 10 leaves. They curl up and fall 😩. I'm very worried it's a pest but I don't see anything.
@betsybegonia
@betsybegonia Жыл бұрын
Hoya australis is accustomed to conditions in which the soil dries out. If you water too frequently they will yellow and drop. You really have to let the potting mix dry between waterings, they do not like damp feet.

My tiny Hoya crimson princess sat unmoving for 18 months - you'd think it was a silk plant - until the wonderful BB discord community helped me figure out I was severely underwatering it. Over the winter it grew 4 big leaves and developed a couple new growth points. So yeah....that myth.....

Back when I did the first good ole purchase of my Hoya this seller put spagnum moss and leca in a soil mixture and said that it was ‘one type of soil mixture’ and my Hoya was literally dying. When I wrote the bad review the person instead of giving me a refund ended up getting rid of my review and the moment I repotted her she did extremely well without that weird soil.

Have you or can you do a video on importing plants? I understand the risk and that you need to really nurse them back to health etc, but I don’t know how to start the process (paperwork type stuff) of importation! And I’m dying to!
@betsybegonia
@betsybegonia 2 жыл бұрын
There are some videos out there already on how to treat them upon arrival. As for importing, it depends on your country. It's different here in the EU. In the US you need to find a plant broker for more than 12 plants and the shipping cost is so high I'm not sure it's worth it to order less than 12 at a time.

re the water situation, maybe you are set on reverse osmosis or distilled, but I put fish tank neutraliser in my tap water, it removes all chlorine AND chloramine from the water and my plants are thriving on it

It's the calcium in the water that is so problematic for me. My tap is extremely high in calcium and if I use it in the humidifiers, my entire apartment is covered in white dust within hours. It's awful.

you know, a lot of what you are saying are more or less common sense, if you really think about their natural habitat. i think people tend to forget the natural habitats of hoyas... sometimes they are in full sun, sometimes they get very little. sometimes lots of rain, sometimes they may be nestled in a spot that gets little to no rain, but tons of humidity

I'd imagine there is some truth to the myths - of course, they dont apply to all hoya. Here's what I think. Rootbound: megalaster is a particular one which likes to fill the pot with roots before actually growing. Maturity before blooming: 1) hoyas with large flowers (e.g. gigas, lauterbachii, the other eriostemma types) do need to grow large before they start flowering. 2) cuttings with peduncles already present - would bloom. cuttings without peduncles - would not produce peduncles unless they're really happy. Sun: gonna go out on a leg to say that hoyas like direct sun. all of them (even linearis, hypolasia). just avoid excess heat. some, however, need more humidity + ventilation than others.

Most cuttings seem to develop peduncles very early on in the tents. I think they wouldn't have developed them if it weren't for the high light.
