Depends on the Hoya, but mostly peduncles. New growth is exciting when a plant hasn’t done ANYTHING since you got it, and peduncles are always exciting but especially when a plant just grows and grows and…👏chop chop it’s time for a peduncle!

One way I can tell if it is a peduncle versus new growth is the angle it grows. Peduncles often grow down back towards the stem rather than up or straight out of the node. This doesn't work for all hoyas, but does for most I grow.

When my MultiFlora arrived it had 8 peduncles and I was busting with excitement and then they all turned yellow and fell off. I related it to shipping stress. She now has 5 active peduncles again and it is very close to opening blooms! I am babying her!!

Now that spring is just around the corner I'm starting to see a lot of peduncles forming. In fact, my Hoya curtisii pushed out peduncles, which I didn't see until it flowered the other day! I have one noid, that has had a peduncle sitting on a vine for the entire winter. It hasn't grown, but hasn't dropped off either. It's in perfect shape, just comatose! Has to be four maybe five months like that. When it does bloom I'm going to throw it a party!

The first two peduncles showed up on my Hoya Pubicalyx - really exciting. I have waited for this for a really long time. One of the peduncles looks more promising than the other. But new growth is extremely exciting to me.

Orchid veteran turned Hoya newbie 🙋♀️. I have my very first peduncle on my Hoya Wayetii. I am so paranoid it’s going to blast. Tiny buds are forming and it seems to be liking the extra sun coming through due to changing seasons. 🤞I will see it bloom. Thanks for the info. This could not have come at a better time for me. I have a handful of hoya...most for 2+ years with little to no growth. All bets seem off this winter/spring though...many of my hoya are growing new leaves...and what I think may be peduncles on my Chelsea and Wayettii...tbd. I keep all of my hoya in a covered South facing window...right up against the glass. Thank you for sharing. Your experience is always very useful and insightful.

Nice outtro :-D ! I started my Hoya Kerrii from a Valentine Day leaf cutting and the first node that formed not only pushed out leave but also a peduncle. It flowers successfuly so I assume that hoya Kerrii is one of the easy ones. I also have a hoya pubiclayx "red button" that grew 2 peduncles during this winter. It seems that the colder temperatures in my room triggers them (but I don't really know in fact). I am waiting for the flowers on this one. I hope these peduncles will not blast !

I inherited my mother's 60+ year old Hoya Carnosa last fall (2023). As far as I know she has only bloomed twice in all that time. I have a funny feeling that, as with other plants, one should snip the bloom off after the flowers have died. I'll bet she did that, and that is why in 60 years, she only got 2 blooms. I am impatiently waiting for a peduncle!!

When I spot a peduncle, I make sure to stay on top of watering and I don't move the plant. Then I check on it 50x a day to watch the progress LOL The Hoya that I haven't been able to bloom is H. Mathilde. It's covered with at least 6 peduncles but just won't follow through. The day that thing blooms will be cause for celebration! My H. quinquenervia won't stop blooming and has 7 blooming peduncles at the moment. But it has not grown any new leaves in months?! At this point, I'd rather have some new foliage lol

Thank you so much for this video. Ive been growing hoyas for 1.5 to 2 years. Never have i had peduncles or blooms. I just looked and there is a peduncle on my kerri and my ut039 and my macrophylia varriegata! They are all very small. I have had my crimson princess and crimson queen for the longest and no peduncles can i see. Also my hoya publycalix and my obviogata have nothing either. Please excuse the terrible spelling. And these latter hoyas i have had for the longest and they are quite big plants. They are growing and look very healthy but no peduncles.
@BasiePlants2 жыл бұрын
Some of those do take a while to bloom! I got kerrii to bloom about year and a half from a cutting, obovata a bit less. Some clones of certain species do bloom sooner than others. Pubicalyx and carnosa can take over 2 years to bloom. Some people say carnosa takes 4 years on average. Latifolias are also late bloomers as well 😬 Since your plants are healthy I think you will see flowers this spring or summer! 💚

I bought my first Hoya (a pubicalyx) 2 years ago and it still hasn’t bloomed, even though it’s huuuge. Then I got another kind, but it didn’t bloom. Then I got 1 or 2 more, and of course, they didn’t bloom. Now I have nearly 30 different kinds, and none have bloomed yet… 😩 So yeah, I got into Hoyas cause, yeah, they’re bewitching. You just can’t go back to a life devoid of them. But really, my obsession is also largely due to the fact that I became batshitcrazy over them not blooming for me…! The more I get, the closer I get to witnessing at least one silly little peduncle that will probably dry out on me… Awwwww Hoyallelujah 😵💫

Is there a difference between a peduncle & a panicle in reference to hoyas? I hear some people, like Doug Chamberlain saying panicle. I know panicle is a term that refers to a cluster of flowers that form a certain shape. Some of my hydrangeas are the panicle type with the kind of egg shaped flower clusters. But I didn’t think that term applied to hoya blooms. Perhaps the peduncle is the structure the flowers emerge from & the actual flower cluster is a panicle…? Can you clear this up?
@BasiePlants2 жыл бұрын
For hoyas, we would use the word peduncle. From the peduncle, you have pedicles and on the ends of pedicles are flowers. The entire thing (flowers, pedicels, peduncle) are called an umbel :)
