I recommend a pool pole with a saw attachment for larger trees. I’ve just pruned mine for the second time. It’s a workout but only way to get to the higher branches of a full grown tree without a cherry picker.

Had 7 trees over 20m tall (60+feet). Cut 4 of the 7 back to 2m, still working on the other 3. They were all cut back to a Y branching. Not a single leaf on all 4. They have all re-shooted & new growth is1.2 to1.5m (4 to 5 feet), in less then 8 months. They WILL survive heavy pruning if cared for. It will take approx 2-3 years for the trees to get back to regular fruiting pattern. Your trees are not even close to my smallest tree, approx 1m (3') across the trunk at chest height, largest is 2m (6'5"). So for you, cutting yours back will not take any were near as long, to get back to regular fruit set. Just advise if you live in a humid enviroment, paint the cut surfaces with limewash until the tree can heal, just to stop fungi or borers from attacking the surfaces.

@Oscar Zamora plaster type product (made from lime or limestone) that is watered down to a paint consistency. Use to be used to paint Greek & Italian homes before acrylic paints. Also used to protect tree trunks that are suseptable to sunburn (another Greek & Italian tradition).

@Eleni Demos Good to know all of these giants recovered after a very low, hard prune! I was under the impression trees or plants could not recover if there were no leaves left after a prune. Thanks for sharing! Now I can bravely go ahead and prune my 4 - 6 foot trees to a 6 inch stump! :))) Keep them healthy but as low as possible. Pete :")
@elenidemos3 жыл бұрын
@@alwayspete Depends on the tree(s). Was told (years ago) that mangoes shouldn't be pruned below the lowest branches. Wouldn't go as low 6", trees draw from energy stored in the trunk & roots to recover. If it is a grafted mango, DON'T prune below the graft point.
@alwayspete3 жыл бұрын
@@elenidemos They probably didn’t know what they were talking about. Your trees did fine even without leaves. Yes never prune below the graft. Yes, all trees of ours are grafted. Then keep it 10 or 12 if not 6 inches? Pete :”)

I have 2 huge mango trees; approx 12 years old, grown from seeds. One is giving fruit for the second time only. It fruited 3 years ago with no more than 12 mangos. This year it has about 80. The other is giving fruit for the first time and only 2 mangos. It appears all 5 of my trees have anthracnose. The other 3 have given no fruit and are approx 6 years old. Do you know if major pruning and a copper fungicide will help? All 5 trees have thick canopies, but of course the huge trees have the largest and thickest canopies which actually touch one another.

Hey David, do you have any suggestions on growing Guava in central frorida?
@davidthegood5 жыл бұрын
If you are growing the normal tropical type, plant it against a south-facing wall or tit will freeze down in winter. A better option is to get a cattley guava, AKA strawberry guava, which tastes quite similar but is more cold hardy and can be grown in the landscaping.
