Hi Jelle, My larch video is still on the editting bench so you beat me again. I have had limited success with cuttings but each year I take about 20 and hope to have 3 or 4 survive. It's worth it if you have the space. When I am pruning if I can't find buds close enough to the location i want on the branch then I go right back to the whorl and cut there - this often causes two new latent buds to swell. I will prune larch three times in the growing season to get maximum ramification growth etc. They are brilliant trees for bonsai.

Agreed! I love Larch! If you do not eed branches to grow, you can also pop the growing tip when they are in paintbrush stage!

Just found several seedlings in my garden from my 20 year old Weeping Larch. This has never happened before and I would appreciate your recommendation as to the potting up mix to use. I am in NY a zone 5 b, and my much loved Larch, has been defoliated almost completely by our invasion of the Spongy Moth (aka Gypsy Moth) caterpillar. They have made lace of our Oaks and even some perennials too. They seem to be quite selective. Since there are very few who grow Larch nearby, mine was a sudden target for thousands of these creatures. Do you think it can recover from this?

(Sorry for my english I don't use translator) Hi , I have a pre-bonsai Larch (european I think). It was collected last year in the mountain and at this time of the year (17/03) there is still snow on it. Im in Belgium and there is no snow at all but thank god the tree seems to be okay and ready for spring (I Hope). My questions are : Because my Larch is in a totally different climat , Can I prune it a bit this year or its too risky to stress the tree and maybe losing it (I really love it and I dont want it dead) + When can I Prune it ? internet says a lot of things , sometime it says prune it before the buds come out , and sometimes it says prune it during growing season (probably in belgium May June July). I am worried and about my larch because I dont the "Belgian period" to work on it Thank you all
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Hard to say without seeing the tree. If you have just collected the tree, it is best to let it root first for a year. But, naturally, you will need to trim the tree to make it manageble. In general I prefer to let things get settled, after an initial prune upon collection.

Great informative video thank you, I have a new larch Forest in the UK, does it matter what time of year you complete this pruning, is there an ideal time?

Not really. If you do it in the middle of spring, you will most likely get a second flush, which is always nice?

Great video Jelle, thanks for sharing. Larch is one of the species I always seem to have problems with. As yours look so healthy, can I ask what soil mix you use for yours please?
@GrowingBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Nothing special I am afraid. I have a basic mix of baked clay grit, bark and pumice that I grow pretty much all my trees in. Larch do not like hot roots. So if the pot gets lots of sun in summer, that *could* be an issue.
@mikeswain19452 жыл бұрын
@@GrowingBonsai Brilliant. Thank you for all the help Jelle, really appreciated. When you say 'baked clay' any idea what that might be called in the UK? Possibly Akadama or something similar perhaps?
