Wonderful show Nigel! That dwarf cypress is so old looking! It looks like some of the tall old evergreens along the highway up here! I just can't get over how good that one looks! The whole display trey is wonderful! I found it so fascinating that Peter Chan was so amazed that the leaves on all your Bonsai are so small! That was so cool to watch, what a treat for you! You deserve it!

The Dwarf-Hinoki / Sekka-Hinoki surely aren't easy to work with, but they can make fantastic trees. Yours is already looking very convincing! I hear Hinoki don't really bud back, so I'm always afraid to cut back anything green that's close to the trunk... This spring I bought one, but so far I just let it grow a bit. I think next year I'll try to give it a bit more shape and try some cuttings, too! Overall, great little collection of tiny trees!

hi Nigel, Loved the video, you can grow cascade branch more easily by tilting the pot to make the future cascading branch pointing up, it will encourage more growth. cheers

Those little babies are great for the viewer, because their pruning is so quick and you get to see several little trees in one video. I was wondering if Barbie would match in scale the work bench scene?

Good Afternoon. Enjoyed watching the pruning of your miniature trees. Didn’t you have a pair of small swan handled sewing scissors? I kept thinking you needed some very sharp small scissors with relatively longer blades. And do you have a preferred way to sharpen your scissors? I cringed a little as you cut the roots and some of the sand grains were also between the blades. Thanks again enjoyed this Lilliputian episode.

This is another variety of hinoki then mine. But I have the same issue, it's so tiny... Gotta be careful when pruning. Bought myself some awsome small pots and even made a small stand for one of the pots out of walnut wood.

I'm always curious about these very small bonsai. In Takamatsu (I think... it's been a while since I was there) in Japan there is a full sized tree that's over 400 years old. It was originally the favourite bonsai of the first Shogun Ieyasu (around about 1600). When the Shogun died, in his will he commanded that the tree be released from service and be allowed to grow as it wants. Hence the huge tree in this era. The interesting thing is that it looks like a normal (though ancient) tree. There is absolutely no clue what it looked like as a bonsai. That's obvious, when you think about it. The width of the trunk on the 400 year old tree is many times wider than even the width of the widest branches when it was a bonsai. There is no reason to imagine that any remnant of that shape would persist. What I'm thinking, though, is that's probably also true of tiny bonsai. You could grow a tiny bonsai for years and years and years and then decide to grow it out into a large bonsai. Would anyone be able to recognise it at all? Kind of a weird thought, but it entertains me :-)

Hi Nigel and co! I am looking for some help with my plumeria bonsai and am unsure who to ask/where to go. I started following years ago when Nigel was trying a plumeria and was so sad when it didn't make it in Canada. Mine is I think 4 or so years old now from seed, I've top pruned 4 times and root pruned 2 or 3 but I don't have a front and the shape really leaves a lot to be desired. I'm too scared of killing it to be as aggressive as Nigel. 😅 The leaves have definitely started to miniaturize though! I started trying to bonsai plumeria because my little Sicilian nonna grows them, and as she's getting older, it's getting harder and harder for her to care for big trees. I am at least succeeding in that mine is much smaller and more manageable, but pruning it once a year has meant I haven't had this one bloom at all, which is one of her favorite parts of growing them! I have grown plumeria potted/inside before and had them bloom so it's either the bonsai process or the fact that 2 years ago I moved from Texas to Pennsylvania. Any advice would be welcome! This is my only bonsai, but I love the channel and watching all the updates 💖

Love the video, my mom is a potter and I need her to make some pots the size of these! So cute. I remember you saying that you use no organic matter in your soil, and use fertilizer whenever you water. Do you use the same fertilizer the same amount for all your trees?
