I've never been to Canada...But in all my travels, I've never seen a black squirrel in person. It's funny, even the animals love you!!!

It’s fun to see you apply many of your bonsai principles on a larger scale. Giant Loppers! 👍🏽

Cool squirrel. I see you have a new helper in the yard. Boston Blackie would be a cool name for the squirrel. From the old radio and tv shows.

It looks black but is actually a Sciurus carolinensis (eastern grey squirrel) carrying a variant pigment gene@@TheBonsaiZone

We have grey squirrels here in England, so its great to see your black one Nigel... by the way do you manage the orchard all on your own or do you have a team to assist you ? @@TheBonsaiZone

It's usually just my wife, me and Shellie that do all the work. We do have a core group of about 5 people but life gets busy for most people and attendance is slim to none!! Lol!! @@ianrowe9337

Great video Nigel! On our apple trees I've noticed a huge difference in how the tree responds to pruning in winter vs summer. Winter pruning encourages rapid response growth, straight up. Summer pruning results in more modest growth responses, and generally less work with removing suckers the year after. Seems to stimulate more flowering spurs also. So we do big structural work in winter, detailed pruning for more fruit bearing branches in summer.

Those younglings are gonna grow to be some strong warrior fruit trees! I’m diggin the pruning!

Winter is the best time to prune. You can see the bones of the tree better. Nice pruning.

Aw man I love squirrels, we have a few at my summerhouse probably up to five, I remember in fall i was doing some garden work and one climbed up in the oak tree beside me and just stared at me. He later jump like 12 feet to a willow tree and climbed down and gave a freindly squeak, lovely little things 🤣 Only thing that scares me is if the babies are petted too much and get your smell mama squirrel will eat them out of instinct.

In my experience, if I pruned my pear tree that hard, I would get a lot of foliage growth the next spring, with very few flowers (and hence few fruit). I have read that one should not remove more than 1/3 of the branches at one time. What am I missing here?

If I can steer you in the direction of Stephen Hayes here on YT. He's a medical doctor in England who has a medium sized orchard that he and his wife maintain. They have mostly heirloom English varieties of fruit. And he gives great instruction on a variety of methods for maintaining your trees. Just from hearing your question it could be a matter of timing, cultivar, maturity of the tree, is it grown from seed or grafted. Are you cutting off the fruiting spurs without knowing what you are looking at? Stephen Hayes has a good many videos and you are likely going to learn a good many things about fruit trees. Best wishes

Hello David, I should have mentioned that these trees are young. In the first 3 to 5 years, pruning should concentrate on developing the structure of the tree. A young tree can't handle producing a lot of fruit, it will actually bend and break the branches off! As these trees mature, less heavy pruning will take place!! Thanks, good comment!!

On the subject of attracting bees, it could begin to add some housing for native solitary bees to the food forest.
