thank you Mike, I learned something new about my favorite plant. It is really beautiful in the spring, it is actually my most viewed video. God Bless.

candleburning; i wish they would have responded back to your comment I'm having the same issue. The plant is taller than our house but about 5 feet up there are no new grown or leaves. He said that it LOVES sun so I'm guessing its because its too shaded under there. He said it gets about 36 inches of growth each year so I'm going to cut it about 2 feet from the ground and let the little shoots grow that are already popping up from the ground. If that doesn't work we'll probably just pull it up.

Thanks for the info. Wish I found your video sooner. I have this bush in the front of my home. It looks terrible this year and half the bush has winter kill. Also the Bush is about 8-10' tall and needs type of trimming. Can I trim my bush radically in the spring rather then waiting for the fall?

does the prunus cistena bear a lot of fruit? my main intention was to get a lot of fruit from this shrub, but if it hardly gives any, i may consider another shrub that looks similar in terms of appearance but does bear a lot similar fruit. prunus cerasifera unfortunately is too big, that's why i'm looking for shrubs only, even though this one can still grow pretty big if you don't prune it properly.

Do I really need the top cover for hardwood cuttings or can I leave it exposed and through the winter?

Is it possible to save a dying one? Winter was very harsh and strong winds.. half of mine has buds on it.

I have two sand cherries I planted five years ago to screen out my neighbor's driveway. Now they are ten feet tall. Most of the leaves are at the top two-thirds of the plant. If I cut the several "trunks" about 18 inches off the ground, will the plant sprout new stems and form a thick bush closer to the ground? Thanks.

What did you do? I have 2 that are 10 foot tall and top heavy. I want to cut down but don't know how far.

I cut one of the several main stems back. It helped some. Got some sprouts out of the ground around it. Still thin at the lower levels. Conifers are the best bet for screening in a northern climate. Green all year. Don't need a lot or any maintenance.

When should you be doing this pruning early fall?

I have a purple leaf sand cherry that's 12' foot tail with branches that are 2-4" thick. Is there a way to prune this shrub back to a manageable size? Or is it better to start with a new plant? I don't see how to prune to an attractive size when the pruned branches are so large and visible. A hard pruning would leave a skeleton or thick branches and few leaves. Would the shrub fill out again? Any advice is appreciated.
