Ren has said in the past that he can be introverted and anti-social, that he can sometimes be over-whelmed by fans over-sharing their personal tales of suffering (he has had more than enough of his own), that he wants to share his experiences if they help others, but he needs his personal space. I don't think anybody could deny him that

I really liked what you had to say about this video. The song is a mashup of 5 songs by Fred Again, so they aren't Ren's lyrics, but you can really feel the emotion in the way he put the songs together and the way he performs them. Ren has another new one that came out a week later. It is a mashup of Back On 74 by Jungle and Message In A Bottle by The Police, appropriately titled Back On 74/Message In A Bottle Retake. I hope you'll check that one out too. It is amazing!

It is his apartment/flat in Calgary, Canada. He is there still getting medical treatment for his autoimmune disease. He has been there 15 months, so it is not his home, only a temporary place to stay. He is not with his friends or family so I'm sure he feels alone (minus) Josh his camera guy taking the video of course. 😁

Ren said this mash-up hits on feelings from his years of being ill and fighting for answers on his own. I happened to catch a post on his IG in the middle of the night last year when he started blowing up. He was struggling emotionally with what was unfolding and said he wasn't built to be famous. He deleted the post after after a few minutes.

The truth is, no one is built to be famous. Least of all great artists. It’s why so many bands have an incredibly special debut album, and once their lives change, they can’t capture that magic anymore. I think Ren will be fine though. His soul has already been tested.

It is comforting that others see in Ren the same thing I do.I mean I am not going to worship Ren but the talent and intelligence I see in him is rare to be sure, I think knowing a bit more about him just through interviews and blogs. He has given himself a purpose for his existence even beyond his aspirations for music. I found that statement noble and inspiring. With this song knowing he is away from home and anything familiar, friends, mom. And undergoing the misery he has to still be going through. Daily treatments not feeling " fine " has to be hard and I feel it in lyrical delivery in the words. I felt melancholy and hope persevering. Thanks for reaction !!

With regard to filming in his apartment in Calgary, I see parallels to his flat in Brighton that emphasize a sense of homesickness. In particular, this echoes his Bongo Bong video with The Big Push. His apartment in Calgary is luxurious and opulent by comparison, but empty. The views from his roof in Brighton may not have had a spectacular view, but it was filled with his friends. Interestingly, both videos end by panning up to towers, the Calgary Tower in this video, and Brighton's smokestack in Bongo Bong.

You were pretty spot on in your analyzation of Ren based on things that I've heard him say on his streams. Even though the lyrics aren't his, they spoke to him which is why he was able to emote the way he did. He builds connections to people through his music that makes it feel like he's talking directly to you. People take that a certain way. He once said that he couldn't possibly respond to all the people that want him to. There wouldn't be time for anything else. The only way he can communicate to the masses is through his music.
@PrymalChaos10 ай бұрын
Transitioning to being a celebrity is often enough to break people. It’s why we see this phenomenon of the celebrity public meltdown, or people losing touch with reality. Ren goes even further than that because he is so extremely talented and emotionally transcendent that people tend to not only appreciate him, but on a mob level they begin to deify him. Not saying that he doesn’t deserve that kind of adulation, just that I hope he figures out how to navigate it and remain mentally well.
@sigally10 ай бұрын
@@PrymalChaos He is aware of that. He has stated that although he lives that his music has more eyes on it, he doesn't like the attention that goes with it. If anyone can withstand it he probably will. Music is his first love, not fame. But, he's human. I hope for the best.

Towards the end, you touched on parasocial relationships, and I think that's always an important topic. Things can get really creepy and uncomfy in internet land really quickly. I get it can be easy to forget we don't actually know one another, but we have to keep our grip on reality and remember appropriate boundaries. Ren makes cool music that's really relatable to a lot of people, but we don't _know_ him. And he doesn't know us, either. Anything he puts out is censored or adjusted in some way, even if it isn't intentional. Watching 5 hours worth of interviews doesn't mean you know someone. Knowing about a person isn't the same as _knowing_ a person, especially if what you know comes in the form of public engagement. Enjoy the music, laugh at his silly gooseness, but don't obsess. It isn't healthy for anyone. *Edited for formatting
@PrymalChaos10 ай бұрын
Even with my extremely humble platform I feel like I have had my eyes opened to the unhinged psyche of internet culture and the fabric of relationships. People often make demands of me and how I should do my work, or what I should listen to. I know that these comments are made frivolously or without any real weight, but when you get hundreds of comments a week like that, it begins to weigh on you. You eventually feel beholden to these random internet voices and you develop a sense of responsibility to fulfil their collective wishes. It can really alter your perception, warp your personal goals and change the way you work. If you let it. Now picture being Ren and feeling the weight of expectation coming at you a million miles a minute. Every day. I hope he can compartmentalise it and continue to do what he loves in the way he has been doing it.
@Popular_Novel10 ай бұрын
@PrymalChaos the internet has given us many gifts, but in a lot of ways I think it's just given some of our apparent need to dehumanize people a new outlet. We, as a species, have a habit of turning one another into commodities in all kinds of ways. The internet has just taken that and given us more options. Now we can do it without the burden of seeing the harm it can cause. "It's just a comment" or "I didn't mean it that way" are telling defenses. We're so used to doing it that a demanding comment, or even the simple expectation that you'll always do what we want you to, doesn't seem at all unreasonable. There are people resisting that, sure, but culturally it's still very much the norm in internet land. But I do second what you said, I hope Ren can set the weight of that aside so he's still able to do what he loves without feeling that burden. I hope that for you too. As much as we may do it to other people, we're very poorly equipped to handle it being done to us. Appreciate ya!

Thanks for a great reaction, always appreciate your insights and eloquence. Ren loves Fred Again (an EDM UK artist) and was at a FA concert last year. Imagine being in the middle of an EDM frenetic crowd and a track includes the lines "I've been lost for a while, but I'm really trying". He broke down and sobbed. Ren's art is unbounded by genre, etc., but often he really is sharing his heart and soul with his audience, and you're right, we do feel connected to him, each in our own way. It really helped me understand just how much he had changed them, and that my brain doesn't see or hear music the way his (and yours) does, because listening to the originals I could never comprehend what he did to them. He pulled so much emotion out of EDM tracks.
