I've seen comments that say "just replace the port, that's what the customer wants, charge them more for doing what they want". The reason Sorin (or myself) don't do that is because it's unethical to charge the customer for work/parts they neither need nor want. I don't do stupid things like that which is why I'm retired at 56 after 20ish years of repairing laptops and why the people who charge for un-needed work/parts will be working until they drop. The job of a repair person is to diagnose the fault, liase with the customer, and then repair the device even doing extra work like sorting out liquid metal, not to make up problems or charge for work that doesn't need doing. The reason for this is because the customer doesn't have years of experience or they would be doing the job themselves and therefore their initial diagnosis of the problem is quite often wrong. You have to be honest in work, and life, or you'll get nowhere fast so this video is a good lesson in a couple of ways. Wisher21 also points out (in the comments) that some companies will send you one job to see just how honest you are before giving you more work!!

0:52 Ps5 hdmi ports tends to be pushed back which may rip the pads off the board ... also there is a tiny cap right behind the port which also may get ripped off ... so the port will look like brand new but it's actually pushed back and not connected but in this case the port was already changed
@einfelder82629 ай бұрын
I kept focussing on the fact that the HDMI port legs were not soldered to the board, allowing the port to move, making soldering the pins harder than it should have been. Finally one leg was soldered but the other one(s) were not. The HDMI port will be broken off again due to the flex, because 90% of users can't take care when inserting or removing cables.
@Mark_C19 ай бұрын
Nicely done, Sorin. Life would be so much easier without customers and suppliers 😂 Had the same kind of problem on my first ps5 hdmi port replacement. I removed the old port and tried to just flow the new port into place and it failed the nudge test several times after trying to touch up with my iron being careful of that damn capacitor. In the end I the new port again, tinned the ports pins first and this made it sit nicely. I think when removing the port you lose half of what little solder Sony uses and so needing more applied makes sense. IMO tin your port pins first before flowing into place 😊

Two comments: 1) The capacitor should be checked for capacity, it could have been destroyed while being heated so long completely in solder. 2) You could have also soldered the right stand of the port. For more stability.

You know, Sorin... I am suspicious of that port, and here's a little story: There is a Laptop out there, the ThinkPad T570, and it's known for its failing hard drive. But in fact it's the hard drive connector that falls off the motherboard. And it seems that there is a plating on the pins of the connector that takes solder. The plating ripps off the pins after some time and the entire connector gets "desoldered" or rather disconnected. You can try to solder the connector and it might look like a good job even, but it doesn't hold for long and at the end the connector has to be replaced. So I am a bit suspicious about entire connectors disconnecting from the board. But, that's just something to keep in mind and consider I guess. Although there is a difference in that the pins of the T570 connector are springish and separatish. While in the PS5 case they are grouped and held together by the plastic.

Lots of these come from Sony with barely any solder on them. At some point, one or more pins let go through no fault of the owner. I nearly always replace the port as the factory ones aren't great and I can warranty a brand new port from a known supply that has been fitted properly. In this case, it's not the factory port anyway. The oxidisation on the APU die is common on the PS5 after a while, presumably the result of heat spots. Symptoms can be shutting down in the middle of a game. Cleaning up and respreading liquid metal is part of a service or any job like this where the board is removed.

Hello Sorin. Thanks for all the great videos. Amaizing to watch you diagnose problems with relatively simple tools and your own knowledge and experience of course. My grandson has a PS5. It frequently freezes which i believe is related to an overheating issue. I was interested to see you re-bonnd the chemical metal on the CPU. Can you explain a little more how you removed the old chemical metal back to the Zinc plated surface. Did you use anything on the cotten bud or did you just use the dry cotton bud.
@luminousfractal4209 ай бұрын
Freezing could also be the other chips on the board. It's sometimes wise to check the north and south bridge chips as well as any extra in/out chips. Adding a small heatsink where necessary. Especially when it comes to playing with liquid metal on an uncoated pcb. That said it shouldn't be overheating, it's a console. But kids want what they want I know. If I was ever going to use liquid metal I'd put a conformal coating over the entire pcb first. It's not that expensive for the protection it offers. MG chemicals make some great epoxies for this. Don't use silicone as that causes heat buildup and silicone is actually semi porus and can transfer and trap moisture. I live in a very humid place where dust, moisture and often ants combine to kill circuit boards. Coating them is a neccessity.

Im amazed that people are having to mod a console to have it run smoothly. The whole basis for consoles is that they run flawlessly from day one to end of life. Your basically just paying through the nose for an outdated pc (5years out of date minimum due to being locked into parts from the start of design). I'm not getting it.
