There was a post last year on r/emulation of a upcoming PS3 emulator for Android that would go open source in march of that year, it never happened. It was named "Trampoline" and the 'dev' even showed a screenshot of it getting to the Health warning screen. Don't know what happen to that project, I think it was a troll post as they deleted the post. What a let down.

New subscriber here, great video, concise overall perspective. And it's not just a brute force hardware issue, even with a more powerful phone, emulating the PS3 properly involves emulating the SPUs which are extremely fast special purpose single cores processors that are highly customizable and thus vary in usage from game to game making their functions hard to pin down, and on top of that they need to be properly synced or the game is just broken. Pretty much all of that would need to be reworked for android, especially the way that most android SOCs are made with a big/little design for efficiency, that wouldn't play well at all if you're trying to run SPU code in the background on an overloaded weaker efficiency core.

In terms of power, a modern smartphone demolishes ps3 in every way imaginable. In general CPU tasks the phone nukes the ps3. What extra power the cell gives with it's spu's a phones gpu can do better. But yeah thanks to cells weird spu system I don't see ps3 emulation being possible on mobile until the elation itself gets figured out

Given the complexity of the PS3 (& Xbox 360) architecture + the game size, PS3 emulation on smartphones is a definite unlikely. Streaming RPCS3 from PC to phone via app is probably the only way to do so although it definitely defeats the purpose of portability.

Watching this 6 months later and aether has improved by leaps and bounds, our mans Tahlreth been putting in some work for sure. I'm sure one day we'll see ps3 emulation on Android but it will definitely be quite a while before we do. We're only just starting to see some games be playable on PCs that aren't top of the line and with the ps3s cell processor who knows how difficult it'd be to configure on Android. I'm surprised I don't see more people asking about og Xbox or Vita emulation on Android which personally I'd love to see and are probably much more feasible than ps3. Honestly I feel that we'll probably even see 360 on Android before we do ps3 given it's less complicated architecture

Since RPCS3 is an open source emulator on PC maybe someone might try to make a PS3 emulator on Android but I doubt that it will be any close to being "good" but you never know, it may not emulate heavy games such as The Last Of Us or GTA but perhaps it could be able to somewhat handle some non graphically demanding 2D games I just hope to see something come out of RPCS3's source and hopefully it won't be stolen

Update on Aesther. It's currently the best imo. There used to be an known issue and workaround to play ace combat 5 because of something to do with the way textures loading in. They fixed it and it can be leggy sometimes ,but overall the experience is there. 10/10

Aesther is based on the same code as PCSX2, the developer has an agreement with the team of PCSX2 to just make the same emulator just for Android, which is why it's so good, since PCSX2 has been in development for like 15 years.

WII U got 350 Gflops, PS3 got 230 Gflops. A Notebook with iris XE can handle WII U games like Breath of the Wild. It has 1.7 tflops of GPU power. A modern S23 got 3.3 tflops GPU (that is abput twice as fast as a ps4 or nearly as fast as a PS4 Pro) Power. Getting games to run should be more of a software thing in my opinion.

You're right man. My friend has a i9 9900k gtx 1080ti and 16GB RAM. it's a good enough PC and he can't get stable 30 in some games and some games have glitches despite the good framrate. Phones aren't powerful enough RN. I think a lot of it has to do with the structure of android phones too. That's the reason a very powerful android is needed to run aether sx2.

Tell your friend to use "Lossless Scaling" it's in steam. This scales lower res up. If you game at 720p 60fps. You can scale up to 1080p 60fps. You save GPU power doing this. Also the app has built in API. This is like dx12 or Vulkan. Don't know which one it's using but it's great. Less GPU power the better. If you game at 1080p 60fps. You can scale up to 4k 60fps saving GPU power.

So PS1 games come in the range of 200-500 megabytes. PS2 games come in the range of 1-4 gigabytes. PS3 games come in the range of 10-40 gigabytes. The average app size is that of the average PS3 game so I see no reason why a smartphone couldn't run a PS3 game.

I think that were not to far away from an ok working PS3 emulator but I doubt we'll have a great or excellent one, people never seem to remember that the biggest issue and main reason Sony rushed to finish the PS4 was the PS3 had a really complex coding and security coding that was driving game makers mad, mixed with the fact that the internet OS was based on the same basic starting point that Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Mozilla and pretty much everyone one else but Sony left lots of pieces out of their OS build making it have issues talking to other sites, that bring said I found that PPSSPP's Gold Edition works great in some cases running PS2 games, PSP games and PS Vita games, now Some PSP and Poo S Vita games were essentially dumbed down PS3 games and we're playable on PS3, and if your following the PS4 emulator movement and the Hacks movement then you probably already know that they have no cracked the code enough to have a working stable XMB dashboard which is the biggest problem their having with a true working PS3 emulator, it's mostly systems security coding that's stopping the PS3 xmb to work properly, saved games won't load, games crash when loading and it's all in the hand off from xmb to game and back again, so I see the PS4 movement surpassing the PS3's emulator development, the PS4's coding has been easier to crack and data mine, the fact that they have gotten a stable dashboard means they are alot further along the the PS3 and I bet it's the hand off from dashboard to whatever that's the issue and cracking that will open the PS4 emulator doors, I think the people who worked on the PPSSPP project should sit down with the people working on the PS4 emulator and even the ones working in the PS3 emulator and trade some secrets, each seem to have what the other needs, the PPSSPP emulator hands off nicely 97% of the time so I think they have some codes the others need, vise versa they need a cleaner module set up and I think the others have parts and bits of it, only time will tell but I wouldn't hold my breath on the PS3 dropping before PS4's just due to the complications everyone from audio, software, gaming, hardware and everything else had making working compatible, playable products for it.

Bruh any phone that has snapdragon 855 or more powerful chipset are already much more powerful than ps3 or xbox360. We just can't play these console games because of software issues, we do not have hardware issues. Think about it, call of duty mobile, fortnite mobile, genshin impact, etc. runs on max settings at 1080p90fps without lag on modern mobile gaming phones while ps3 and xbox360 ran all of their games at 720p30fps with lag.

Also, a phone has enough emulator support to fulfill most people's mobile gaming needs. Dude. PS4 is a long way off. Ps3 already requires quite a bit of horsepower that the steam deck lacks. @@siyzerix i didnt say you should use a steam deck as a phone it was made exclusively for gaming after all but you still have a built in browser and you can even get LDplayer on it which means you can play android games it does come with a desktop mode and has a built in browser now if you are gonna buy a 600 dollar phone specifically to use emulators then its not a good investment as the steam deck has more emulatable systems and also a steam deck can fit in your pocket i can always fit it in my pocket perfectly fine

A $600 gaming phone is a top end phone able to beat flagship phones in performance AND still do gaming extremely well for a mobile device and the games available for it. A steam deck is just used for games. I very much doubt a steam deck will fit in my or yours jeans pocket. Meanwhile a gaming phone will probably fit your jeans pocket. Heck, forget a gaming phone, even a regular phone will do so.

Pcsx2 considers playable just by being playable to the end regardless of performance, including horrible unplayable performance A lot of rpcs3 games under in-game just because they can't run on quad core CPUs but can be finished

The phone was 200 bucks ish new in 2020 and I got it for 75 because the screen had a burst in the corner and the guy "Always sold his phones when they became damaged" Slapped a 15 bucks Ipega PS2 layout switch-style controller on it and voila. Low end phones are becoming amazing.

I really hope that there's someone/a dev team working in the shadows on a PS3 emulator for android just like how AetherSX2 suddenly appeared out of nowhere. (And an original Xbox emulator as well) Edit: Mr.Sujano I have to disagree with you about the technology not being there for PS3 emulation on android (I'm basing this off of you meaning that android hardware isn't strong enough, if I'm wrong then correct me), if phones are capable of running Breath Of The Wild at almost consistent 30 fps (ignoring the bugs related to the emulator itself) then they can definitely run a big chunk of 3D PS3 games (especially ones that run at native 30fps instead of 60fps, like the JoJo games Persona 5). Of course it comes down to the actual code of the emulator having to be written/optimized and whatnot.

You have no idea how complex the ps3 hardware is, you can't just compare whole ps3 library to zelda from a switch console which is even weaker than phones... Its not just about coding, its about extracting codes from original console how it interacts with its hardware and OS Check out the documentary behind rpcs3 development it should be on KZbin, i have been waiting to play ps3 games for half a decade on pc platform, even now it struggles to run older uncharted games at 60fps on high end pcs... Not is it also about hardware a snapdragon 888 does not hold even close to what an i5 8th gen cpu can pull off in many games as emulators rely more on cpu and 1/3 - 2/3 on gpu power in pcs, same cant be said about mobiles, if we get option to connect an external gpu at some point, maybe possible to emulate right away but at that point people will might as well buy the playstation console or a pc

I didn't say that phones can run the whole library of PS3 games, I said that a chunk of them is definitely playable at PS3 native resolution (I only didn't mention the resolution part). And I did sayy that the only problem is the actual code and emulator itself that's going to be an issue and make performance worse.

Aethersx has come a long way as far as being user friendly. It use to be you really had to know the ins and out of emulators to get it to work well. Now it just auto configues pretty well and you can make tweaks as you like.

Just want to give an update and give people more information about PS3 emulation on android. First of all,im not even sure if this will change in the future,because we might never know what will happen tomorrow since technology can take a leap really really fast and everything can be possible. But realistically, PS3 emulation won't be possible right now,atleast 2 or 3 years away so DO NOT install any kind of app that claim themself to be a PS3 Emulator for android,those can either be virus/malware or even exploits to steal your personal data from your phone,so don't just download everything you see on the market or anywhere. Just look into what we currently got about PS3 emulation. RPCS3 is the best emulator right now that you can run on PC,presuming you are having a decent/ better than average pc with atleast a 6 cores/12 threads CPU because while being very well optimized,it still constantly have frame rate drop,crashing,freezing and buggy. My PC currently have Ryzen 7 5700g 8 cores/16 threads with a RTX 2060 and i can only run games that are considered playable by the devs like GOW 3 and Ascension. But even then,the fps is still not good,there are fps drops and graphics bugs all over the place. The point is,even a powerful PC couldn't even run an emulator well without any issues,then we shouldn't even hope that our phones can do it. Because i don't think a mobile phone CPU like Snapdragon 8 gen 1 (which is the best phone chip right now for emulation) is stronger than a Ryzen 7, right? Think about it. My conclusion is that you should wait until RPCS3 run well on PC first before you even expect an Android version is in development. And that won't be possible anytime soon,maybe even 2030,so like i said, stay away from scams and be patience.

You probably shouldn't underestimate mobile chipsets. I think mobile chipsets have come a long way.. Android is an unique platform and requires ideal coding and optimization for emulators to run smoothly. Most modern mobile chipsets are more than powerful enough but lack ideally optimized software for the platform(s). Optimization takes effort and sometimes money.. And sometimes both aren't there. It's really more about software design and optimization and less about hardware capability honestly..

It's not really about hardware. It's about comparability, optimization and anything software. Mobile chipsets are very fast rn but still no one ever invested on makig such games compatible in mobile phones. It really depends on individual games and companies if they want to make a mobile version in each of their games. Emulation itself no matter how capable your hardware is but if the software is not there yet, nothing would happen at all.

@@yuxomgaming9824 It's true. A while ago I did some cursory research on compute performance.. The PS2's stated performance in terms of GFLOPS (Billion Floating Point Operations Per Second) is 6 Gflops.. The PS3 is about 230 Gflops. The Snapdragon 855 from 2019 has a rated compute performance of around 900 Gflops. That's significantly more than both combined... And even though that's not the only metric for measuring compute performance, it gives you an idea of just how much headroom exists for emulation and software ports.. Don't even mention the iPhone's chipset, it's even better.. Usually a couple generations ahead of Snapdragon chipsets in general. In reality, it's more about the software transition from custom architectures to ARM based architectures.. So again, it's about optimization.. Not about raw compute performance or hardware. Mobile chipsets today are way beyond that generation of consoles which are highlighted in this video.. But converting complex architectures into software for the purpose of emulation can be quite challenging if you don't have the kind of intimate knowledge that engineers from Sony, Nintendo, Sega and Microsoft have when it comes to their respective hardware. And that's the real problem...
