PS3 Launch: How I got one when people were getting SHOT and ROBBED for it.

PlayStation 3 launched Novemeber 17th, 2006 and boy oh boy did Sony really mess up. They sent very few systems to the US, which caused riots, shootings, and robberies. This is the story of how I got mine. (I didn't rob anyone. Nor did I use any weapons. I know that's kind of a spoiler but anyway just watch the video ya knuckle head love muffin you).

I had a launch PS3 😔Someone broke into my house in 2007 while my mom was home alone in the bathroom and they managed to rob some small stuff and my PS3. They left the house once they found out someone was in the house. The house was a little trashed and I remember being a scared 11 year old for many nights, Fearing the intruder will come back. I didn’t get a PS3 again until the slim model released.

I waited 3 days in line for the PS3 at my local Walmart. I got to wait inside so it wasn't that bad. I was first in line by like a day and the first night I slept there I got woke up by an old lady kissing me on my head bc she thought I was homeless haha. Fast forward to me getting the PS3 my dad found out they were selling for so much he wanted to sell mine and I was very upset so I talked to my uncle bc the PS3 was going to be an early Christmas gift and he said if my dad sold it what else I would want and I told him the Wii comes out in a day so long story short I went back to Walmart waited for the Wii and ended up getting both the Wii and PS3 since my dad didn't sell it.

I got super lucky when i was a kid, my uncle was just randomly at a walmart and found one and called up my parents to tell them he found one because they had been searching for one. I was able to get it for Christmas that year with call of duty 3 and need for speed carbon.

My story of how I got my PS5 a month after the system launched was really similar to this one! Just last December, I was working at toys r us (toys r us isn’t shut down in Canada) for a program called work experience. Work experience is a high school program where you get placed in a company as a volunteer worker, but you do the same work as all the other employees in the company. You don’t get paid for anything in work experience, but you do get high school graduation credits. Plus, I had never been employed before so gaining the experience was good for me. That is, until I got hired at Michael’s two days after I got “hired” at toys r us! Anyways, the launch day for the PS5 just so happened to be the day of my first shift working at toys r us! After my shift ended, I had a conversation with my super nice managers about the PS5, and I learned that one of them had a PS4. I told them that I was looking for a console, and they wished me luck. They both knew how hard it was to find those things 🤣 I still remember the entire story like it was yesterday. On December 16th, 2020, my manager pulled me aside after my shift had finished and gave me an opportunity. She told me that about a week earlier, 16 customers had ordered a PS5 from the toys r us website, because the website had shown that there were consoles in stock. However, there were actually no consoles in stock at any of the stores or online, which meant that someone had mistakenly marked the PS5 as “in stock” on the website, when in reality, the consoles had instantly sold out two weeks ago. So toys r us was left with 16 unhappy customers who had just paid $700 CAD for a product that was not expected to be in stock again until *long* after Christmas. To solve the issue, toys r us actually contacted Sony directly and asked for 16 units to give to those customers, and they accepted. So on December 16th, the systems had arrived at my toys r us location with the customer’s names on the boxes, ready for them to pick up. The twist, however, was that the customers had to pick up their system by December 17th at 9PM (when the store closes) or else their console would go onto the store shelves for anyone to buy. My manager also mentioned that toys r us employees aren’t allowed to buy high-ticket items from any toys r us store, because if employees were allowed to do that, every PS5 would just be put on hold for all the store workers, and there would be none for the customers. However, since I was a work experience student and not an employee in the company, I was perfectly eligible. See where I’m going with this? This is exactly what my manager told me: “before the store closes tomorrow (December 17th), call us and ask if any of the customers had not shown up to pick up their PS5. If we do have one, we can sell it to you at 9:01 PM, because at that point, the store will be closed and any remaining consoles will officially be a free-for-all. We keep the cash registers open until 9:05, so don’t worry about coming in a little late. Good luck!” So that’s exactly what I did. On December 17th, at 8:40 PM, twenty minutes before the store closed, I called in and asked if there were any PS5s available for sale. My coworker said he’d go check for me. Prior to this call, both me and my dad were *fully* convinced that the answer would be no. I mean, who wouldn’t pick up an item like a PS5 that”s *on hold* for you, right? The odds were more than unlikely, but it was worth a shot. When my coworker came back on the phone and said “okay, we have *one console* that we can sell to you” my heart started racing. The second me and my dad heard that, we put on our slip-on shoes on and started the car. It was 8:45 PM when we hung up the phone and started driving, and it normally takes us twenty minutes to drive to the store from our house. As soon as I hung up, I immediately realized that I had forgotten to ask whether the console was a PS5 digital edition or normal edition. Since I had already bought a game disc myself and my friend had agreed to loan me a few games of his, I could not buy the digital edition PS5. During the drive there, I fully convinced myself that the console would be a digital edition machine, because this entire scenario seemed too good to be true. My dad agreed. There was very little traffic and the stop lights were in our favour, so we arrived at the store five minutes before closing, ten minutes below average! We walked in, and my coworker immediately recognized me. I asked him whether the console was the digital edition or not, but he said he couldn’t remember. He went to the back to grab the console to find out, and when he walked out, it was time for the moment of truth. He revealed the box, and on the front cover, there was an image of a PS5, with a disc drive. The feeling of euphoria I felt when I saw that box is a feeling that comes once in a lifetime. Me, my dad, and the other employees at the cash registers with us began chatting until 9:01 PM, and when the time came, I paid with my debit card. We walked out of the store, and we drove home with a disc edition PS5 in the backseat. When we got home, I showed my mom our accomplishment, and video called my friends to show my recent purchase. So many small things had happened that lead up to that moment, and I felt on top of the world. I used my first paycheque, from my first true job, to buy my first ever PlayStation. I’ve never owned a PlayStation before, and I’m absolutely loving it. Sorry if that was long! I was really intrigued by your PS3 story, and it inspired me to share mine. On top of it all though, I wanted to write about this story so I could keep document of it, and never forget it. Who knows, maybe 5 years from now I’ll look back on this and feel some *major* nostalgia. I’m graduating high school in 4 months now, and with graduation coming up so soon, I’ve been reflecting on everything, whether it was 3 years ago or 3 months ago. When PS4 launch I didn't get to pre order, I was fiending so hard for one. After college classes, i got to gamestop at 1pm and waited until 6:30 pm, was playing Gravity Rush on Vita the whole time all just in hopes they will have extra systems to launch & I got to be the first person to pre order a system & then I came back at midnight and I was in the first group of reservations. It was annoying but I did what I had to do. Then I was up all night playing Battlefield 4 & Lego Marvel Superheroes. Unboxing that system was a treat. Good times 😂

I was 6 years old at the time and I remember hearing a story about a this guy who got jumped and stabbed by a group of people for taking the last PS3 available in the moment. It was crazy asf😬...the dude was in a coma for awhile but he wasn’t the same after he woke up, unfortunately. I got my 60gb on January 6, 2007. I remember it like it was yesterday. I had got a job at McDonald's to get the money on my own when I heard the price, cuz my mom said hell no. The internet connection didn't reach my room, so I had to drag it and my tv to the other side of the apartment. Took all night to download GT Prologue and (I think) the Resistance demo. I loved that system, I was the only kid with one out of like 50 kids I knew. Then about a year and a half later, I moved to live with my cousins for a little bit. One of my cousins was a drug dealer & kept pushing me to get rid of the ps3 and come hang out outside more. I kept telling him hell no. So one day, I was in the hospital & while I was drugged up, he sold it & gave me an 8 ball of crack & $100 for it. I was so pissed off & sad, I had so many hours into ES:Oblivion. I didnt get a new (40gb 😝) one for another year or so. He got killed a few years later... Karma is a real bitch!!!

My story is pretty similar. I was 9 at the time and I always remember it because a couple of months before this my house had been broken into and my ps2 was stolen along with 50+ other games I collected throughout my childhood. The story is my dad and I went to go see Rocky Balboa on premier day on Dec 20, 2006 at a movie theater in a mall. When we exited the movie theater my dad jokingly said let’s stop by the game stop to see if they have it. It was like 10 minutes before closing time so I remember running to the other side of the mall with the small hope they had the system. When we got to the GameStop no one was there but 2 employees. My dad asked if they had the 20gb system because $600 is a lot lol. They had only 1 60gb system so we obviously took it. I remember the receipt being like $670 which is crazy for a system in 2006. Of course this counted as my Christmas present but my mom was furious when we got home and found out how much it cost us haha

The journey of getting some of these consoles is so much more special than actually having one. I remember myself getting the PS3 PS2 XBOX Original PSP All like it was yesterday. What made all these purchases that much more special was that my Grandpa was behind every purchase, as a younger kid, getting a new game or console was an event in itself, i remember the breakfast i had on that day, the whole daily pattern leading up to the moment which is insane to remember considering i forget things from a week ago but remember every detail of something that happened in 2001 When i got my Xbox...or 2002 when i got my PS2...or 2005 when i got my PSP. The PS3 one is definitely the highlight because i remember those things were a nightmare to obtain if you weren't lucky on launch, My grandpa went out of his way to check every store,every single day to get a 60gb PS3, 2 months go past & not a single sniff of PS3's in sight....a few 20gb models came & went but they were like the black sheep of PS3... Until one day, i go by my grandparents house , we had dinner & spent the better part of a day there, once dinner was done, my grandfather said he was going to the bathroom, on his way back, out he comes with a Playstation 3, it was 40gb but i didn't care because he spent 3 months grinding just to make his grandson happy & the joy of that is just beyond amazing. That was the last time it truly felt special to get a console.. After that i have had PS4s & 3DS's & switch & the magic just doesn't feel the same as an adult

There was a total of 3 shipments after the initial launch of the system ( including the launch day units ). I worked at Best Buy at the time and was the lead for the video games and movies ( media ) department and had a very good relationship with our Sony representative(s). November 14th was launch and then about 2 weeks after there was a quiet second shipment. This was the shipment that store employees got to eat off of. When a new system launches, the allocation is for customers only. The third shipment was right before Christmas and I remember very vividly it being publicly announced. All of those units was launch or day 1 systems. All same models. All stores in major metropolitan cities would get 40 at the most. The store I was in got 12 on launch day. 6 60s and 6 20’s. The second shipment we got 4. The third Shipment we got 10. Good times !

i was 6 when the ps3 came out. i "shared" it with my two brothers (one of them got home before my other brother and i and would always get to play first and i barely got to play because he was older and would never get off). i remember opening it but since i was so young i didn't remember which christmas it was when we got it. but it must have been a launch ps3 because to this day we still have that stupid talladega nights blu ray. that was the first console i ever played and now i have my own ps4 that i actually get to play whenever i want and i don't have to share with my brothers

I remember getting my PS3 in December around that time as well. Also I got the Talladega Nights Blu Ray included, so Sony must've included them with the later shipments. My friend had the hook up at Toy R Us and his co worker said there was a PS3 there. We drove there, I got the 20GB system, with Resistance, Madden and an extra controller. On the way to his house, I remember calling my cousin and leaving a voicemail screaming about getting a PS3 lol. Awe good times, good times. Also I forgot how crazy the launch was, with those news stories, wow.

Yeah man as I reflect on it more I vaguely remember a few sources back then saying the actual initial batch wasn't even the full 400,000 and it was closer to half that. Which makes me think maybe I got a unit from the second wave that was still part of the original 400,000? Either way it was an exciting time for sure. You still got that 20GB? Man I got that $400 20GB model. I remember those awful days of me saving 2 games at a time before having my storage full lmao! I played it offline for a year playing Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 before starting up a PSN account. The first thing I downloaded was the Resident Evil 5 demo and was BLOWN AWAY by how good the graphics were even in 480p. I swear me and my friend sunk in 100 hours on that demo before he got the full game lol. That and I remember begging my parents to pick up Uncharted Drakes Fortune for me because the demo was so good. Man good times. Good times indeed.

I'd honestly just tell most people to get a PC. I know PCs can be crazy expensive- but there are really good starter ones for around $800USD. I know two-hundred bucks over a newly released console may cause anxiety, but it's well worth in my opinion. If Ps5 isn't backwards compatible, I'd highly recommend moving to PC where every title (outside of exclusives) is. You won't have to worry about lack of games. Any money wasted on PSPlus/XBox Live can be used to save for future upgrades to the PC- or if content with the performance, just buy more games! The Sales for games on PC are beyond absurd.

EpicTutorial lol. I picked up a slim 160gb this last week for $25 Canadian with two controllers (silver and black DualShock 3’s) and two games (Rayman origins and Batman Arkham Asylum). Updated it to OFW version 4.85 and installed Rebug CFW 4.85.1 I’ve successfully got 4 games FTP transferred to the hard drive from my pc so far (cod 4,cod waw,farcry 4 and the original skate.) plus bought original black ops. Love the ps3 to this day! I actually got my first one by trading a 360 elite for it. It was also a 160gb slim.

I remember the craziness around PS3 at launch back in 2006. My buddy got a launch PS3 and he was extremely excited to play it he rushed home and hooked it up and gamed for a couple of hours before he had to go to work, he eventually invited me over and I got to try the PS3 and I remember it being awesome. I eventually got my own PS3 a couple of years later when the system had it's first revision (fat 2 USB port model 1) and a big price drop (still have that same PS3 to this day and I just started playing Motorstorm on it again).

I remember in 2010 when I got my ps3 slim. I know it's a little later then the original but for me it was my first true console. I had so many great memories on that thing and I still keep it around today in it's box. I even found the receipt from Best buy

Good story, I myself bought my first PS3 in 2009 here in Australia but no BC systems were available any more. However I recently purchased an original launch BC console just a few months ago from eBay for US $26 from a guy in NY never been opened or tampered with and it was a Made in Japan model which I didn't know even existed. Only issue is I have to purchase NTSC PS2 games for it. But they are cheaper to purchase and get posted from America than to purchase pal ones from here. So pretty stoked about that......!.......😁😁😁

Did you get some collector PS3s ? Most of them suck but some of them are great like the japanese edition of Ryu ga gotoku 3 rising dragon pack, I bought one on the internet, it took about 3 weeks to arrive, it was pretty fast cause usually it would take almost 2 months. I don't usually like to spend money for something like this but I don't regret it, I still have it and it still works fine.

I’d like to add more limited edition PS3’s but I’m running outta space! 😆 I also own around 6 limited edition PS4 pros, and 3 limited editions PS4’s, and a brand new launch model, too. I got my first PS3 as part of the MGS4 bundle back in 2008. Even though I had an old SD, CRT TV, I was amazed by the graphics jump from the previous generation. Sadly, it died from the YLOD in 2016. I had a lot of good memories with my grand piano/george foreman grill of a console.

I actually won mine in a contest on Nickalodeon I think it was. It was either that or Cartoon Network. The contest was to phone in and answer questions correctly, the questions would have about 3 or 4 answers each and you had to guess the right one, I don't remember what show it was for but I LOVED whatever show it was and always got them right. I was around 7 at the time and my family was surprised when one day there was a knock at the door and the person said "congratulations, your son won a PS3" and gave it to them.

I remember when I bought my first new PS3. It was shortly after the launch of the slim, and literally no one had any in stock. One day I was at Sams club and saw a display box of it and figured I’d take the box to the front and see if they had one. Sure enough, they had that very display model in the back in a box wrapped up and I finally had my PS3. A guy came to the front as I was buying it looking for one and that was the last one they had. I still have it with the box to this day and have had zero issues with it after thousands of hours of use

Impressive, but lucky. My lucky stories was that I was waiting for the hype to end. I came home one day and my girlfriend at the time had a package around the same time you got yours. It was mailed anonymous and when I opened it I couldn't believe what I saw. It was a thank you letter for something I guess I did for someone and couldn't remember what it was that I did. But it was a launch edition with extra oem controller and headset. I was livid. Funny thing because that fall before Xbox 360 release I had one a console from Mt. Dew long before they hit store shelves I had received mine by mail. Awesome time and memories then.

Dragon Ballzzz Deep yeah I never got my first one until 2011. At the time I was on my second Xbox 360 arcade console. The first lost its disc drive so I got another. The laser burned out so I ordered one from China on eBay and swapped the laser into my drive. Then once that went I got a resident evil edition red and black elite 250gb from my dads co worker. Used that for a few months and decided I wanted a ps3 once my friend showed me uncharted. Posted it up wanting to trade for a ps3 and got a 160gb slim model with Modern Warfare 2 and NFS Shift! Wish I had gotten a ps3 much earlier because it was far superior to the 360!

Sounds just like the ps4 launch except best buy and other places lie to the consumers they have the consoles in the back its just they dnt want to sell all of them out: i called my local best buy the lady said they had non, i go to the store hoping maybe they might i see an employee turns out to be a manager i ask do you have any and then he proceeds to walk in the back and theirs a legit stack of them on pallets. Always ask to speak with a manager you might get lucky :)

I got the 80gb one in Australia for my birthday, I think I was around 13 or 14 at the time, came with race driver Grid, which is one of the best racing games I've played to this day. Then I bought warkawk which took over my life, just imagine a updated warkawk as a ps5 launch title. That would be insane! Ill never forget playing the first resistance at my best mates house, co-op was insanely fun and then motor storm online, mixed with playstation home which was kinda fun or my mate trolling me and cancelling a LBP update on 99% FYI - we're not friends any more... I will never forgot the ps3 generation and ragdoll kungfu theme song.

I'm in the UK and I remember my Dad going into work late on 23rd March 2007 just so he could set up the PS3 that we'd pre ordered from Argos (Argos is a popular catalogue/shop based retailer here in the UK), and I remember my mum picked me up from school that day and gave me a copy of Ridge Racer 7 that she'd picked up on her lunch break from Woolworths (another retailer here in the UK that sadly closed down at the start of 2009 - my mum didn't work at woolworths tho), I was only 8 (nearly 9) at the time!
