Sony focusing on hardware and Valve on software, providing Steam with everything that comes with it. We had a glimpse of that with Portal 2. But it ALL but vanished with the 2011 incident. Valve continued its journey with steam os, steam remote play, its own game controller and now the Steam Deck. Fast forward today and maybe the Vita would have had a second breath, you would get no PS+ BS as well, etc. I truly think they would have accomplish something great working together... Ryan has been the go to source for the PlayStation community on KZbin for years and these documentary specials are just brilliant. Thanks brother for the effort & excellent content. The PS3 brought me back to gaming and is my favorite console. I always have gotten into new generations later in the life cycles i.e. I bought a PS1 in 1996, a PS2 in 2004 right after San Andreas came out and didn't get a PS3 until 2012. First off I go in phases with gaming from being excited and all in to not playing for months. What has happened with getting the new gens later in their life cycles is that when I do get them it's usually after the Slim hardware revision, so the hardware has been debugged and streamlined. As for software, there's a huge amount of AAA games that are now on sale and very cheap on the used market. By getting a PS3 shortly before the PS4 I got to experience all of the prior hits at lnd Last Of Us. In addition to a huge backlog and going in & out of gaming I just got a PS4 Pro last year. Just like with the PS3 I've enjoyed great deals on games that were just $60 a few years ago (just bought Assassin's Creed Odyssey for like $12 or something). I have had a blast with the PS4 Pro, but my PS3 Slim is still hooked up on my gaming 4K TV and is still fired up occasionally. This novella is to give kudos to Ryan but also , by giving my history with PlayStation, give my $0.02 on the upcoming PS5 launch. Like the other Playstation releases I am waiting on getting a PS5. Availability is probably forcing that even if I wanted to I couldn't get one, but my trepidation is down to the fact that Sony launch hardware (like all companies hardware for that matter) has had issues. Seeing that the SSD is married to the motherboard really concerned me and I would wager that in 2-3 years the Slim version will make the main SSD removable just like the extended storage drive option. Plus we are really in the depths of diminishing returns now. This isn't a leap like Atari 2600 to NES or even PS3 to PS4 (which was appreciable but not gobsmacking). The PS5 will perform better as far as frame rates and the addition of ray tracing and other graphical fidelity improvements but sitting 6-8 feet away I'd love to see what the A-B blind test reveals for CyberPunk on PS4 and PS5. I sincerely believe most gamers would have trouble distinguishing between the two versions. Patience friends.

From that point onward, Sony turned a profit each and every quarter and year over year. Meanwhile, Microsoft lost massive amounts of money on the Xbox 360. The 360 had a failure rate of over 54% due to them using cheap and crappy parts. They even lied about the severity of the problem for years until the hundreds of lawsuits started rolling in. When Microsoft finally acknowledged the problem, they had to write off 20 billion dollars in losses to fix the issue. That's not including the amount of money they were forced to pay to settle the lawsuits. Microsoft lost A CRAP TON of money on 360. Also, the sales figures for the 360, while accurate, are highly inflated. Most Xbox 360 owners had to buy the console at least 2-3 times. The 7th generation was a case of polar opposites. The Xbox 360 raced out of the gate, but a substantial hardware issue, a less than exceptional reception in Asia, and gradual diminishing of exclusive titles narrowed the gap after every year. The PS3 had a very tumultuous start, but strong support from first party developers, fortuitous adoption of Blu Ray as opposed to HD-DVD, and a commitment to delivering incredible exclusives all the way up until the end of its lifecycle definitely helped carry it over the finish line in terms of bang for buck. Jack Tretton’s commitment to 10-years of support might have seemed like a massive cope in the moment, but looking back, he definitely wasn’t wrong.

I have to say, when I opened my ps3 on day 1 of release I must have stared at it for a minute like Patrick Bateman looking at the business cards in American Psycho. The ps3 at the launch was (at that time) the height of playstation. I was in gaming heaven. The ability to play ps1, ps2, and blu ray movies along with mgs4 was such a wonderful time. It's a shame how the way the ps3 was made would be a disaster for developers and not being backwards compatible with future games on the ps4. Given that, I have zero regrets buying one. Wonderful documentary! More like these documentaries please!

Looking back on the 7th Generation of Gaming, its so strange that I consider it a generation that I would say, was better when it finally ended. I say that because if you think about it, all of the Big Three's had their own major problems to deal with while the gamers where in the middle of it. - Nintendo: While the original Wii sold extremely well for the company, many "hardcore" gamers saw the system as a motion controlled dust collector with mountains of shovelware and moved on to other things that caught their interest, despite a lot of great releases from both Nintendo and other companies. And on top of that, when third-parties actually did release a game on the system that was worth checking out on it (even if the game had normal controls), most third-party games didn't sell well on the system (aside from Just Dance, but I'm pretty sure that's not what most gamers are looking for, so moving on) all because of the image Nintendo put on themselves in this era. - Microsoft: While they were having a great time enjoying their success with the Xbox 360, the Red Ring had other plans for many gamers, out there and while the company definitely had the pockets to deal with it, it's something that the internet hasn't forgot about and something that Microsoft doesn't want to relive again. - Sony: (Pretty much everything Ryan said in this video), but its true. Right out of the gate, Sony was setting themselves up for failure the day they announced the official price tag of the PS3 at launch. We go from high price tag for the system (which would've hurt Sony regardless of the PS3 selling well because they wouldn't make any money back from any system sold) to features that were promised day one to developers having trouble making or porting their games onto the system to fast forward years later, the PSN hack. Then what happened the following generation? Pretty much history repeating itself.
@fattiger69575 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 7th gen was like a comedy of errors. I'd like to add that the Wii is what killed the Wii U. The casuals thought the Wii U was just an addon for the Wii and they had already gotten bored with the Wii. Gamers weren't interested because it didn't have 3rd party support. 3rd party publishers avoided the Wii U because the Wii didn't sell software (the 360 and PS3 have more software sales despite selling 20 million less consoles) Nintendo's 7th gen mistake just took a little longer to catch-up with them.
@fawkkyutuu88515 жыл бұрын
7th gen was weak In the traditional single player sense , but It's strength IMO was console online social gaming and landmark multiplayer. The system Itself was beautiful , powerful , and complex but as a gaming console It will always be a letdown to me with a weak library. If COD4 MW didn't come out and do what It did for online FPS I would've said 7th gen was easily the worst console gen since the crash. 6th , 5th , 4th , and 3rd were the greatest so far imo... with 5th gen being the outright best ever IMO.

That generation will always be associated with M$’s shady anti-consumer tactics taking center stage; thus, history would repeat itself In 2013. Fuck the trashbox. I‘ve trusted in Sony since I got my first Sony TV and VCR as a kid in the 90’s. Sony and PlayStation for life!
@Manic_Panic5 жыл бұрын
Xbox's real problems started in 2010. Abandoning what made them successful (simplistic console with good video games) to turn their entire focus on the Kinect. Third party devs stopped making exclusives for them since the PS3 was getting easier to develop for. First Party devs also shifted their focus to Kinect and that allowed Sony to shine with their exclusives. Still, if it wasn't for Europe, the 360 would have beaten the PS3. Then they go into the next generation and just blow it. Despite being somewhat quick to fix the horrible PR disaster that was the Xbox One presentation, the damage was already done. The console was more expensive, launched with mediocre Kinect exclusives and an underwhelming Halo 5, lost their significant market share in Europe that the 360 worked so hard for and it was starting to be known as the "900p console". Finally dropped the Kinect, developed the Xbox One X (albeit a tad too late) and added backwards compatibility. Then they mess it up again by announcing "Play Anywhere" which basically meant no more exclusives for the Xbox One. It's a pro consumer move but I think in the end it ended up hurting the Xbox brand more than it did good. All this while Sony stood its ground for this entire generation with pretty much no mistakes besides the crossplay drama. I guess MS kinda gave up at this point and it's when they started pushing hard for services and streaming. Acquiring studios to constantly develop low effort mobile games to dump on Gamepass, focusing on xCloud, etc. 2010 was the beggining of the end for Xbox. The company took a massive dump on the traditional console player in favor of the mobile casual.

@@Manic_Panic Don't forget Titanfall flopped In a sense , which was supposed to be their killer app that would replicate COD's breakout FPS success all over again and give them an easy entry Into next gen sales from what was the biggest genre. Monsters like the cocaine level addiction COD franchise , or GTA franchise only come around once In a great while. Sony keeps creating and neevr just leaning on the multiplat 800 pound gorillas , they understand how Important hardcore exclusives and establishing franchises over time are and they protect their brand.

Got to admit that cell processor is a beast and would beat modern cpus , also last gen in processor power
@BlitzvogelMobius4 жыл бұрын
In simplified terms, Cell is just a glorified vector processor with a relatively simple PowerPC based processor core at the head (the PPE) with a bunch of semi-independent vector processors tied to it (the SPEs). The SPEs themselves were akin to the capabilities found in VMX vector processing units on the PPE core and other PowerPC based processors, but lacked the more robust set of capabilities found in an actual general CPU core like branch prediction. Functionally they still required a command core of sorts (the PPE) to organize, orchestrate, and synchronize their processes and heavy developer focus on hand tuning memory control. The secret sauce in Cell was not just the ability to theoretically produce it's massive vector floating performance, but to actually get near it by having the prerequisite architecture to allow such a high flow rate of data in and out of the SPEs. Doing it in such a relatively affordable package with a reasonable number of transistors for the time was nothing short of breathtaking, but it was only doable at the cost of more traditional forms of processing. Outside of math heavy operations, even single core Athlon 64s, Pentium 4s and PowerPC 970s would eat Cell for lunch, but they were not designed for specifically high vector performance as needed for a game console (graphics, physics, sound, animation, etc) within a reasonably small affordable package. All the Cell equipped servers IBM designed still used some kind of general processor like an AMD Opteron with the Cell acting as an "accelerator" because the PPE was not good enough in this regard. What is interesting in relation to that is IBM taking the PPE core which they developed for the Cell, and used it to make the Xenon CPU in the 360, using three PPE cores instead of one and ditching the SPEs. While the PPE's branch prediction, load/store, integer capabilities were still well under that of the previously mentioned general single core CPUs, the Xenon with 3x PPEs was much better equipped to handle a more PC like processing environment, and therefor easier for developers to grasp, while still retaining the blistering vector performance that the on-PPE VMX unit provided, esp since the PPE core was designed for 3.2 GHz - much faster than Athlon 64s and PowerPC 970s in 2005. Infact the VMX on Xenon was modified with expanded capabilities that are not found on the PPE in Cell, like the ability to be accessed by both PPE hardware threads. Having that vector performance on the CPU core itself is easier for developers. Xenon could still do a bunch of the broadband data flow capabilities directly into the VMX units that could be done with Cell's SPEs too. You also need to consider that PS3 was sort of a Frankenstein's monster when looking at the total system config. There were many design changes as Sony started to realize how technically limited the Cell really was in alot of ways. Sony first dabbled into using two Cells for all computing + rendering, then looking into using a Cell based GPU (SPEs coupled to Texture Units and ROPS). Sony realized that an actual GPU made by a company whose main product was GPUs (Nvidia) would be a better solution (cheaper and readily available), though the RSX is basically just a cut down Geforce 7800GTX. The addition of a proper GPU and Microsoft doubling the 360's memory to 512 MB would force Sony to add the additional VRAM so the PS3 too would have 512 MB total (256 MB XDR DRAM + 256 MB GDDR3 VRAM). The RSX needed fast memory access and going through the Flex IO to the XDR DRAM, while available, was slower than using the dedicated pool of GDDR3 VRAM. The Xenos GPU in the 360 was much more advanced (unified) and appeared a full year earlier, though to be fair the 7800GTX had been available in summer of 2005.

I had fond memories with the PS3 and even though they made great games like Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, God of War 3, The Last Of Us, and more, I think the lack of innovation, the infamous Sony E3 2006 presentation, the infuriating $599.00 price (the 360 was $200.00 less than the PS3 at that time) and the PSN hacking scandal of 2011 hurt the PS3’s diminishing sales and lost to the dominance of the XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii.
