Thanks a ton! You saved my kids from getting a butt kicking. I was really nervous about taking this apart and trying to figure out what was wrong. Luckily between you doing a disassemble and reassemble and another guys video showing why the discs won't kick out. I was able to get to the little white piece that connects the rollers together. Kids were jamming dvds/games in there and they knocked that piece out and the dvds and games wouldn't eject. So thanks again from a not so much tech person.

I did this and changed the paste and now the ps4 is running super quiet as opposed to it sounding like a hair dryer. Well worth it if you are out of warranty like me.

+AstralDank It dries up over time. Thermal Paste is what makes the heat get out of your system efficiently. If you don't change it your APU will eventually have solder ball cracks since they do not contain lead. I'll probably change my paste in a few months. Did it for my PS3 fatboy.. You should research and read up on it, you literally have the entire worlds information at your disposal lol.
@DerpyNoodIe
@DerpyNoodIe 8 жыл бұрын
+AstralDank Thermal paste is responsible for transferring the heat to the heatsink, the heatsink then dissipates the heat by pushing it out of the system with the fan. If you have crapy thermal paste, the heat cannot be transferred efficiently which then cause the heat to build up on the APU and shorten its lifespan and kick your PS4 fan into high gear.

thanks to this video i was able to reapply the thermal paste on my 2-3 year old ps4 which had been having troubles with overheating. Sadly enough though, in my effort to unplug the power supply i ended up breaking 2 of the prongs and damaged the connecting wire. I have replacements on the way so hopefully my ps4 works good as new and stays that way for a long time to come. If it wasn't for this video i wouldn't have any idea what was wrong with my ps4 and now i know a lot more about my system as a result. Thanks a bunch :)

thanks for this, my ps4 would not accept disks and there was a certain rattle from it, stripped it as per your vid, but also on the br drive, took the cage off that and discovered a roller dislodged, popped it back in place with the cross drive shaft and reassembled. happy days, thanks again.

I bought a second hand ps4 from ebay, after a week it started roaring, like drowning out the tv and the game sound. I followed this video up to where he exposed the fan then hoovered the shit out of everywhere i could get to. I also removed to top panel, the one that comes away without screws and did the same. Result after 18 months, silent ps. Thanks man.

Hey bro thanks for this video, I have a gen 1 ps4 and it just now started to get loud and would freeze n lag in game and it looked dirty in the air vents so i watched your video and copied exactly what you did and now it runs like its brand new and no longer freezes and lags, especially playing dayz

Helped me out. Ps4 was shutting down from over heating. Just wanted to see where all the screws were before i started. Pretty sure was the power supply heating up but i went ahead and removed the hard TP and reapplied with AS5. Then blew the power supply, heat sink, and fan with some air. No more shut downs.

Hey thanks for this upload. I basically followed all of your instructions and thank god the PS4 turns on afterwards, haha. The end was a little bit intense as there weren't verbal instructions. I eventually figured it out and I don't have any leftover screws so I'll assume all of them were placed back successfully. I was able to get this all done in about 3 hours. A lot of the T-9 screws had some metal inside where the screwdriver goes, I guess that's how Sony says "Don't mess with our products".

One of my friends still has his working ps3 from when they first came out. Still works never done anything like changing the thermal compound. Still works fine. I'm thinking it's just luck and you'll be fine I'm not doing this with my ps4. Sony would have put different compound on if they knew it would cause a problem. Or maybe not but still arctic silver could fuck it up in the future too don't matter. My opinion if you take care of it, it should last

I do feel he was a bit rough in the video.. All that tugging and pulling. I was afraid for the connectors lol but great tutorial on a new PS4 and showing that don't is still up to their old tricks again. But I feel like Sony IS trying to profit off a "Lack of Thermal paste" as shown in the previous console. All the complaints they received about YLOD and what did they do to improve it in the next gen Console?? it did no good as they placed the same amount of what seems like toothpaste if not less. So much for Consumer Support. I will do the same to my PS4. Thank you for being a brave soul and doing this tutorial!! Super Vid

Also people, dont be confused with thermal paste and thermal pad paste. ps4 uses a one time use paste. meaning even brand new, you pull apart. It will look old and dry. Thats not bad. That means its not reuseable. Just reapply some artic silver in a small amount. Do not blob it on. It will have reverse effect. Just google different types of Thermal compounds and pastes.

You should have spread the paste out manually, that is the proper way of applying thermal compound. Also if you look at the heat shield on the left @16:14 you will see that the square where the heat is being dissipated from is encompassing more than just the die. It looks like you should apply compound to the surround heat shield on the GPU itself. But eh? What do I know.

Great video. I had a hard time getting the whole section that has the GPU on it...I got it eventually though. But I eh...I kinda ripped one of those silver strip things in doing so, just at the side. It still works but could that develop in to a serious problem? I also had four screws leftover after putting it back together...I guess I'm just super efficient like that! Can't even hear the thing now, just like on day one. My thermal paste was the same consistency as blu-tack...

Great video! I personally do not own a PS4, but I think your doing a great thing by providing viewers with a how-to for self service if they are out of warranty. I think you should start mentioning the dangers of ESD (electrostatic discharge) at the beginning of your videos and how to prevent it. As a computer builder, there is no quicker way to fry the shit out of your components even before turning it on lol. It may help there be less of the "you broke my console with your video" type comments.

Thanks for the video man now I know how much work I have cut out for myself. Just curious why you use Arctic Silver 5? I mean it's a good compound but they have better ones that give lower temps. Also it would probably have been a good idea to put thermal pads on those ram bricks since you already have it open. Make sure you do one of these for X1. I'm sure that one will be more used. Also mostly anything that comes stock is going to be low quality. This is why we have aftermarket products. Thanks again for sharing.

The best thermal pastes on the market are Arctic Silver 5 and Arctic Silver Ceramique. Silver 5 has the highest content of silver available and Ceramique is almost pure ceramic paste which transfers heat VERY efficiently.

mtlnascarfan . The best that you know about. Arctic 5 was not designed for gaming consoles as it does perform better than what you normally see. They have compounds specially formulated for the consoles peek performance. Only about a 6c lower temp but every bit helps.

at 22:22 you have one extra screw screwed in then you unscrew two at 23:02, but you cannot put the second one back in because you put the case back on it, this is where the extra screw you should have goes. unless you fixed it and cut that out.

does cleaning the thermal paste stop the system from making a loud heating noise?

So, you just put a blob of the paste in the middle like that? No need to evenly spread it around?

Also what caused my system to turn off on its own sometimes was the overly sensitive PS4 power button I was able to bend the little piece of metal inside the case to hover the contact instead of sitting directly on it.

What's the point of taking out the blu ray drive or psu if you're just replacing the thermal paste? Is it needed? Thanks

Hi, thanks for the video. Followed your instructions but I believe I went wrong. My controllers are super laggy when navigating on the ps4 and turn off randomly. Any idea what I might have done?

Mine did the same thing, you have to make sure to reinstall the bluetooth antenna. Its the long thin black cord going to the metal bracket that is attached to the bottom front of the cd player, the other end snaps onto a small terminal underneath the power supply. Baffled me for a few until I found it on the floor, must have come lose at some point without my notice.

How do I take the tabs off in order to open my PS4? I need to access the fan in order to clean the dust out but can't because these tabs are in the way.

Do you have some measurements before&after? Noise or heat? To be honest my PS4 is heating a lot, but the air comming from PS4 is freaking hot, which means that the heat got out of APU to the cooler, so thermal paste must be fine..
