PS4 VR Teardown

We tear down a PS4 VR headset.
Start by removing the rubber light blocking piece. After that remove the screws and trim pieces then you can get to the LED array. It is held in by screws and clips. Once that's removed the motherboard can come out, then the display. Be sure to not open the display for long or you risk getting dirt inside the sealed chamber. Once that's done then we start reassembly.
The PS4 VR headset is actually not too difficult to disassemble but there are some very delicate parts and pieces so it's important to be careful.

Big 'thank you' for the video. Ended up with my right lense scratched to death on my working PSVR headset (I wear glasses....). Managed to swap the mint lenses from my other PSVR that had stopped working. Without this video, I would've broken something for sure (like the parts that are stuck with double sided tape etc)....Not to mention some screws are well hidden....Swapping both monitors at the same time as fast as possible to avoid dust particles was a challenge but everything turned out perfect. Anyway, much appreciated, the step by step, was a great help. 🤘

Pretty sure Sony have stopped the manufacture. At the time I repaired mine, I found a non working VR set with mint lenses in a second hand store. Bought it, took everything apart and swapped out the lenses. Worked like a charm. (I did get some 3d printed raiser parts to avoid my glasses rubbing onto the lenses as that's how I first scratched them.). Guess your best bet would be EBay, Facebook marketplace etc. Either you get another one as their prices have dropped significantly, or get a dead cheap non working one hoping the lenses are still functioning and swap them around.Hope that helped...

I noticed some dirt shadowing behind the half-transparent white plastic of the front LED light and thought there is an easy 2-screws-solution to clean it, but no that is way to complicated (plus half of the frame is glued and doesn`t come off when removing the screws). Well the dirt is invisible anyway as long as the tracking lights are off, the main thing is that the lenses are perfectly clean and the AMOLED Display has no dead pixels :)

I had a black speck appear on my screen yesterday. Pulled it down this morning and used one of the “sticky things” that comes with a phone screen protector to clean the lcd off and it’s good as new. I’m seriously impressed with how it comes apart and goes back together so well. Not even any real surprises with cable routing etc. Only thing that was a bit annoying was the side leds falling off the little posts during reassembly which even then a little push in the right direction with tweezers through the hole and they went back in to place. Kudos for your work!

Thanks for this video. I had a few large pieces of dust that were stuck to the oled from the factory. Took it apart and got them off with some scotch tape without touching it. Looks like intended when I play now.

Hi great video, I have an issue with my headphones are not working anymore when plugged into my VR headset. This is be due to the VR wire being tugged on or stepped on during gameplay, possibly listening audio connections. Is there any way I can fix this ?

Is there a quick way to loosen the front unit from the head band? I accidentally lifted mine up too quick & the centre white plate has popped underneath the front unit and need to pop it back out

Maybe you should just pull the head band while you are wearing the VR, so when it retracts, it will adjust to the size of your head

It's a good video, but not what I was looking for. My back head wire keeps disconnecting, and you sadly didn't go over the back piece. It's a good channel. I have used his videos to tear down and repair my devices meany times.

Simple: the ring is metallic and the devices have RTC batteries, capacitors that hold charge even when unplugged.The ring may come in contact with them and cause a short circuit.

That would be impossible since the board is 100% discharged when I disassemble it.

Yes, you can know if it's discharged. There is absolutely NO problem with wearing a ring while repairing electronics that are discharged. You can easily verify that they are discharged.

Watch out guys, the reassemble is NOT the same than this but other way around. Side light are very difficult to put in place.

Am I the only one watching this because I have dust/flecks of something on the inside of the lens. The internet is devoid of anyone else who has had this issue it seems, and its only on the right eye. This is a really good teardown video. Is it possible to make a teardown video/guide for the second PS4 VR model (CUH-ZVR2) as well? I can't find anything online for the headset teardown and I can't really progress very far when I tried doing it myself. I'm especially stuck for the display cable's latch on the motherboard. I have no idea how to safely remove the cable as I've never seen anything like it before. My CUH-ZVR2 is second hand and I'm trying to disassemble it to prpperly clean/disinfect.

Can I adapt the Head band to the Samsung Gear VR, Newest model? I hate the elastic bands and my forehead hurts after awhile. I use the S8plus screen on ultra High. Looks better than previous models of course. I wonder if you could help me?I play firewall on psvr and between rounds sit down,was playing last night and when I stood up my foot was on the lead between the coupling box and the volume controls. Hey great video, I have dirt stuck in between the vr lens and the duel screens, I'm looking at your video and thinking about risking opening it up to blow the debris away. The rubber seal is obviously not in place because the amount of dirt is increasing. Should I risk it, its 2 months left in first year guarantee but don't want to send it away for a month and then potentially charged to fix, which is a big no for me right now. Many thanks
