The problem with a direct replacement or used OEM antenna is the dissimilar metals in the solder and antenna materials. It's called galvanic corrosion, and ruins the antenna connection over time, no matter what you do. You could re-solder the connection, but in time it'll do it again. You could take a piece of copper and fabricate an antenna in the same shape as the pot metal one Sony uses, but I'd say my way is easier, LOL! You could see if the OEM antenna can be electroplated with copper, but I'd say it would cost more than what I did...

Thank you for posting this! I ordered the parts and had them shipped internationally but it was worth it. The lag problems appear to be completely gone. I own a PS4 Pro with a different internal layout than on the "classic." On the Pro, you need to connect the pigtail to the IPX port marked "F". How to make sure? If you look at the video above at 10:20, you'll see the PS4 Pro and the PS4 "classic" use the same kind of antenna for Bluetooth, but the circuit boards are different. To find the port, identify the antenna on your Pro and then follow the cable back.

@KentuckyRanger5 жыл бұрын
It more than doubled my download speed, but didn't hardly put a dent in the upload. I think that has more to do with Sony's WiFi card and not the signal strength. I ran the speed test numerous times, and each time I got different numbers. The best I could do upload on a 300mbs fiber optic network was around 200mbs, and the upload never went above 30mbs. Even when I connect it via the ethernet cable my download speeds never get above 200mbs, and the upload never goes past 30mbs, so I think that must be some limit to the network card itself...

Great video! I am thinking about running hdmi cord to from my game room to the living room which would literally be a 5ft run but there is a wall dividing it since its in another room. Is it possible to run two antennas? One antenna for my game room and the second in the next room over? I would like to be able to switch between rooms when playing.
@KentuckyRanger7 жыл бұрын
Two antennas? I'm not quite understanding. This replaces the stock antenna for the two radios inside the PS4. The Bluetooth, and WiFi. As for video, this doesn't broadcast video signals. For that you'll have to run the HDMI cable through the wall. As far as it boosting the radio range, yes, it should work really well for this! The stock antenna has a range of a few feet at best. From what I've witnessed with mine, when I'm streaming, and have the headset plugged into the controller, when I get up to go to the kitchen for a drink, I never lose the signal, and the kitchen is like 20 feet away. Hope this answers your question. If not, please give me more info, so I can help.

The tiny antenna built in has a horrid range and causes the PS4 signal to be overwhelmed by other radio equipment. I have 2 laptops, PS3, PS4, 2 pairs of Bluetooth headphones, DirecTV receiver, 2 cell phones, and a Bluetooth phone headset. Each radio volleys for position and the PS 4 losses for lack of signal strength. Since installing this high gain antenna, the controller issue is gone.

did you test the antenna (both original and modded one) how far can you move away without disconnecting the controllers or the controllers being unresponsive? sorry my English. XD
@KentuckyRanger7 жыл бұрын
Good question! I didn't test the range, I did it because 10' from the PS4, the controllers started having trouble communicating with the system. I've read that over time, the solder joint on the pot metal antenna weakens from the effect of the dissimilar metals. The correct term is Galvanic Corrosion. Since installing this antenna, I no longer have issues. It would be interesting to test the actual range of both. I might do it in another video...

so my neighbor lets me use his Wifi but my ps4 can only pick it up from our living room. I want to play my ps4 online in my room which is only a few more feet away but I can't reach my neighbors Wifi from there. so if I use this antenna I could be able to reach it?
@KentuckyRanger7 жыл бұрын
I'd bet a Happy Meal it will! The antenna has a 9db gain. Just a guess, but I'd say that punched out pot metal thing Sony calls an antenna struggles at .05db. And unlike the PS3, the PS4 uses one antenna for both controllers and WiFi, so both will get a HUGE boost! In radio, as long as the standing wave ratio isn't broken, the taller the antenna, the better the device will send and receive signals.

What was the color of the wire the ipx connector was on and what's the difference between them when they have a grey wire and a black wire?
@KentuckyRanger6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean? The PS4 only has 1 antenna wire, and the color really doesn't matter. If it's now grey, it could just be a change in supplier and nothing more. If the newer PS4 has 2, then the only difference between the 2 wires would be one is for the WiFi and the other is for the Bluetooth. Which one would be the question. You could look on the motherboard and see where it's connected. It might say WiFi or Bluetooth (BT). I know other Playstation systems have had 2 separate antennas, and for that it would make sense to either install 2 external antennas, or figure out which one is the radio you want to boost. You could install it, and chose one, then see if the quality improves. If not, swap them and see if it makes a difference.

@KentuckyRanger5 жыл бұрын
Very strange... I really can't see where the radio signal could affect the physical performance of the controller, unless you inadvertently disconnected the antenna while reassembling the unit. Try taking it apart again and making sure the connector to the radio is secure. Also, if it is, you should check for continuity in the antenna wire. Care should be taken when connecting the antenna wire to the radio board, because the connector is very small, and can suffer bending if not installed carefully. That's the only thing I can think would cause this performance issue.

@@kchu2705 It must be a bad antenna. There's no way it should be worse than the original. At least you've eliminated the possibility it's a bad radio, because you stated that the old antenna works better. If there is something wrong in the antenna, and the actual antenna itself has lost its connection, it's like having no antenna at all. Is there any way you can take the antenna apart? 1 cold solder joint and it's game over. My gut feeling is the antenna connection has failed inside somewhere. It sounds like you need to go back in and check the antenna connection. It most likely has popped loose. While there are different designs for antennas, any should work. The only difference would be the signal gain and range. If the connector looks like it's still hooked up, unplug it and make sure the center contact hasn't been bent. Those tiny plugs need to be handled carefully, because the center connector is very small, and susceptible to damage. Hopefully this will fix the issue. Let me know!

Sorry, I forgot to mention this in the video, but I think I covered it in the video description. My PS4 is also hard wired to the internet. I did this solely to extend the range and dominance of Bluetooth. Because the PS4 utilizes one antenna for both radios, it works on both of them.

Hey there man, great video! I have a question that might be easily answered but i rather hear it from you. I bought a busted PS4 from a friend. His main complaint was that the controllers keep disconnecting often and very randomly. The wifi doesn't seem to be an issue but it could be better. So of course I popped it open and first thing I noticed is the Antenna's solder point that bridges the small gap on the antenna was broken. So i figured that has to be the issue. Well i tried re-soldering but i don't have a gentle hand and over soldered the shit out of it so that didn't solve the problem. Anyway so fuck that flimsy little thing. Will this modification fix that issue to the best of your knowledge?
@KentuckyRanger7 жыл бұрын
That's the very reason I did this mod! It's not the range, but the dominance of the Bluetooth controller radio I wanted. My controllers were losing the connection randomly, and at critical points in my games, LOL! The flimsy pot metal thing Sony calls an antenna is a joke. Because it's pot metal, the solder joints are lost due to galvanic erosion. (Two dissimilar metals causing corrosion) . I have so many Bluetooth devices running at the same time, the controller signal was getting lost in the crowd so to speak, because of the loss in electrical contact with the Sony antenna. This took care of the issue. I'm sure it helps with the range, but the main reason I did it was to make the PS4 the dominant Bluetooth radio in the living room, and it has worked flawlessly!

After watching the video on tearing down the PS4 Slim, it has a similar pot metal antenna, so I'd say it'll cause issues down the road as well. Te problem isn't the shape, but the material used. Whenever you have two dissimilar metals i.e. silver or lead solder, and whatever metal the antenna is made of, you have what's called "galvanic corrosion". What's happening to these antennas is, the mechanical connection between the antenna wire antenna, via the solder joint, is being corroded. Once corrosion sets in, the connection is compromised. You could de-solder the wire, clean the antenna, and re-solder the wire. But in a short time, the problem would be back. It's just a horrid design flaw Sony should address... Until they do, it'll always be the Achilles heal of the Playstation 4 wireless system...
@KentuckyRanger6 жыл бұрын
After reading several comments referring to whether this works with the PS4 Pro, the answer is yes, but you *MUST* connect the new antenna to the correct radio. The PS4 Pro has 3 separate radios: ibb.co/1f66x9F Watch this video in how to disassemble the PS4 Pro: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZiWaWmifb5oeM0 You *Must* connect to the one you're wanting to boost. *W* 2.4 ghz WiFi *B* Bluetooth *F* 5.0 ghz WiFi Sony has *_finally_* included it... If you want to boost all 3, you must use 3 separate antennas. The system I did this on was the older PS4, and has all 2 radios incorporated into one antenna. Later models split them into 2 antennas, and finally, in the PS4 Pro, they have added 5ghz WiFi, FINALLY!!

Does it work for ps4

It's for a PS4. If you meant PS5, then no. While I'm sure you could add an antenna to one, the steps to do so would be much different, because it's a different machine.

You can go to SSD now their starting to go down n price trust me they are so worth it lol. On all my ps4s I got 2 slims 4 pros and 1 O.G launch day console I got day one. The slims I got cheap the two pros I got on trade for a Alienware laptop. But here recently I modded em all with ssds two pros have ssds internally now and externally. My slims same thing the OG I just used a external. For it but as for keeping up with my ps5 and Xbox series X they are very close in speed as in loading games their very very Close n sometimes the ps4s even beat the new Gens. But I picked up another Xbox last Fri the series S which honestly is a neat Lil guy it's legitimately the fastest console out of em all n was the cheapest lol. I'm assuming because it's a all digital Xbox one S on steroids basically. But it's faster than my series X and my ps4 pro slim n ps5 disk.. it's ridiculous lol
