"$700, £700" is the REALLY insane part of that IMO. £700 = $914.26 USD. Why are they unfairly targeting the UK with a price hike? EDIT: Too many people in this thread are misunderstanding basic maths. The VAT in britain is 20%. If you add 20% to $700, you get $840. You might notice that $840 is significantly lower than $914.26. The price is approaching to the point of uselessness. A console is meant to be a cheap alternative to a computer with limited features. And now, that price is approaching how much computers are and is a still limited. The regional prices too in other countries are such a scam, where theyre charging like 800 euros for the basic console which is nearly 900 USD. I saw many people trying to praise the Playstation 5 Pro for its terabytes, even though thats completely irrelevant to graphical performance. I don't see those people praising it now

You are correct. With the price getting more and more closer to PC's, consoles will not last much on the market. I would say we have 2 generations of consoles left until they become obsolete. Xbox is already playing the long game with Game Pass (if it survives), PS5 doesn't offer anything new and their exclusives just get ported to PC. Nintendo has all of the exclusives and that's their strong point but they will lack power against handheld PC's.

Consoles are only cheaper compared to high-end PCs that are constantly upgraded. The average mid-range PC will have a higher up-front cost than a console, but it evens out with reasonable upgrades every few years. I built a PC in 2012 for about $1k, then over the next decade+ only spent money on a few upgrades (a GTX 970 and some hard drives) - that sucker lasted through THREE console generations before I had to build a new one from the ground up. Consoles had a place once - some consoles were the optimal architecture for arcade ports, and gaming rigs were absurdly expensive. Now they're just overpriced electric bricks aimed at the inept and lazy.

Then there's PC where you can decide on how much you want to spend, don't have to pay extra for any type of online subscription bs, can use any controller you want, _and_ you get an actual Computer to do other stuff from multitasking on the web browse to talking with friends on an actual good communication platform like Discord while streaming your game to them. That's not including mods, emulation, Game Pass and tons of different and more importantly, cheaper ways to buy your games and play them the way you want and well: Next to the bloody $700 router, if this ain't a crowning endorsement for PC gaming, then idk what it is.

A lot of Nintendo's business decisions are questionable, and the Switch is definitely underpowered, but considering it's a portable system with hardware from 2015 it has some of the best games of this generation and it's the cheapest console available that still reads physical media. You might not like it and that's okay, but there's a reason why it has a higher attachment rate and moves more sales than the PS5 and Xbox even 7 years after it came out, people genuinely like it.

@@brianwalsh1339 I meant out of the two home consoles. If we include Switch, Steam Deck, etc, yeah one has clearly won by a landslide. The Switch has been Nintendos best generation in possibly decades, I feel like in terms of the games and their quality, it might be their best relative to the time since the SNES / NES. Every franchise is at its peak, and personally I couldn’t be happier. We’re 7 years in and its still not over haha. The Steam Deck has done really well too, far exceeding most peoples expectations. I think it will be an early example of gamings future - eventually consoles will just stop being mainstream. Hardware will eventually become so good and cheap, that theres no point in not making a device that can do everything. I don’t think we will be there until another 10 - 20 years at least though.

Buy a VR headset (with or even w/o PC), which is almost half that price. Believe me, try it!, you won't regret it, it will be a way cooler experience to finally be able to play while *inside* the game. You won't want to go back to flatscreen games ever again. Regardless, have fun gaming everyone!
