That small capacitor you can also just move one side of it and keep the other side soldered. So it doesnt disappear into the ether.

Don’t use alcohol, buy flux powder for checking heat source, u don’t need the general idea it pinpoints exactly where it’s at and saves u half an hour

Hi. You can try to find a macro lens for your thermal camera. You can see which little component is getting hot easily

thanks for this I hadn't considered that

Unfortunately this method is dangerous to the board. The vias mean you have a lot of parasitic inductance when you instantly shut the voltage of you can have a high inductive kickback that may be enough to give an esd event to any sensitive semiconductor not enough to destroy the device but enough to damage it so it fails six months later. If you dont have a tonohm (these are expensive) you can find a short in one of two ways. 1. if you have the cad files you can inject a small voltage of about 50 to 100mv DC in the circuit and use a voltmeter to find where the current is going. 2. if you dont have the cad files inject a sine wave into the short of about 15MHz at about 5 volt the 50ohm output impedence of the generator will absorb most of the voltage if the short is 1 ohm this will put about approx 10mV and 10mA into the circuit. Using a set of emi sniffer probes you can trace where the current is going. You can make a sniffer probe by using a piece of coax cable I have bought mine (costing about $200) im now looking at a set that will cost approx $2500. I have been using this technique for the last 15 years with 100 percent success and I am confident that every board is reliable once it has left me

Your soldering skills are s#it! Stop pulling on components with your tweezers before the solder is melted! You are going to rip pads! And use proper flux and low melting solder! Also the short finding injection is very sketchy!

Did your parents not teach you 'if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all.' Instead of slating the lads techniques, why not advise. It puts you in a better light.
