PSA PA-15: Affordable AR - Does Budget mean Bad?

When it comes down to an American right, we shouldn’t be restricted… Period. The right of the people to bear arms has been clawed away as time goes on, as governments become more restrictive, as governments become more corrupt. The right to bear arms is the constitutional right that protects all the freedoms granted by God and our forefathers.
These rights should not be hindered, including our finances. Not everyone can afford a top tier AR, lots of Americans are forced to investigate the lower budget realm of firearms. In this video, were combing through the Palmetto State Armory PA-15. This PA-15 can often be had for an incredible price, however does that low cost equate to low performance?
Im blessed to be joined by my friends Kailey and John with the Gun Owners of America and the State of the Second Podcast to help test, review, and film the affordable PSA PA-15.

I really hope this comment reaches a new gun owner or someone researching their first rifle purchase. I work in the arms industry. I've been selling firearms domestically and internationally for 5 years. I handle unobtainably expensive firearms on a daily basis. And I am here to tell you that Palmetto State Armory is absolutely, unequivocally, worth your hard earned money. The AR15 market is so Muddy and convoluted. It can feel very defeating trying to research brands with all the snobs thumbing their noses at budget brands. But at the end of the day, all you need is a rifle you can afford that works every time. PSA is out here doing God's work in that department. They build good stuff that will serve you well. If you buy it and find that you've received poor craftsmanship, they'll take care of you. Every manufacturer let's guns slip thru the QC cracks from time to time. And I mean EVERY one of them. The more guns they manufacture, the more instances you'll see online. Always remember that! Don't break your bank account in half because some 300lb online wanna operator who can't run a mile without going into cardiac arrest tells you your sub $2k rifle is "trash". A PSA rifle is a great rifle that will serve you well for years to come!

I agree, I've got a Christensen, and the one I built with Aero Precision and some donated parts is just as good, imo. I've been looking at these Davidson Defense uppers, and have been wondering if they're any good, I'm sure they're probably just as good as PSA or BCA.

I own PSA, DD, Windham, and a BCM build... i will grab my PSA as easily as I'd grab my DD & BCM to defend myself and family! PSA and DD has same forge. DD and Ruger was for Red Flag laws and stood up for the ATF. If the BCG and Barrel is decent you can do a lot with that rifle!

People don't seem to get why PSA guns are so cheap. They see the low price tag and just think they're cutting a bunch of corners to lower the price. That's not the case though. The reason they're so affordable, is because they run an almost completely direct to consumer business model. You're basically paying what it costs before it's been moved through a bunch of distributors and retailers who all jack up the price so they can get their cut. For an example of how big of a difference it is I'll use the Springfield Prodigy, since some of their pricing got leaked a while back. Depending on the version you get, you're looking at a $1,300 - $1,600 street price. How much do distributors pay? $750 - $850 for the exact same gun. Nearly half of your money goes to paying off middle men.

The metals used are not in spec, look at the aluminum used for buffer tube barrel and others, soft cheap junk. Look at the treatments used, garbage, look at the quality control, garbage. The dimensions aren't in spec because of cheap Garbage manufacturing. Your brain is filled of 💩

Thats not the only reason. Palmetto doesnt do the strict QC that a lot of other manufacturers do. They do sample testing for their MPI and pressure testing. Meaning maybe 1 out of 100 parts actually gets tested if that. Manufacturers like Daniel Defense inspect every individual part, and their upper and lower receivers are a mated pair from start to finish. So yes, PSA does cut some corners. They definitely arent a bad budget firearm though.

I got mine after my first deployment to Afghanistan in 2013, and have used it since without zero issues. Put some rattle paint on it, have dropped it (not on purpose), used it in cold and rainy weather, and still going strong. Since then I’ve acquired some fairly expensive guns, but the beater I found myself shooting the most is Mk-18 built with PSA lower, upper and base model BCG that I’ve put IDK how many thousands of rounds though, and I’ve had no problems.

Can't afford Danial Defense, CMMG, etc. I have 3 PSA AR's, (PSA's are actually the ONLY AR's I've had.) Out of probably 12-13 rifles and pistols, over 7-8 yrs,I've had only "1" problem, and it was handled quickly and professionally. Sent my upper in and had it back in 6 days. Problem Solved. PSA is always my #1 "Go To". I'm 100% satisfied with PSA.

The Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, was proposed by James Madison to allow the creation of civilian forces that can counteract a tyrannical federal government. not trying to be the boastful type, but I have some higher end AR’s along with some PSA stuff, and after my curiosity got the best of me, I finally decided to break a few different brands down for measurements, and found that a PSA receiver set was right up to par with a DD receiver set, and a Barrett receiver set, and all uses 7075 forged aluminum. I found no difference.. I noticed that the gas key on a base model PSA BCG was slightly staked a little less than the higher end stuff, but how much will the effect the average person?

the only issue ive seen with PSA is that some things arent screwed on 100% of the way and sometimes theres some metal burs in places. you do a full disassembly, at worst hit a spot with a file and some touch up paint or instant blue, and make sure everything is screwed down right and oiled and you are set. id take saving $300-$500 on a rifle and just having to strip it and rebuild it.

Have used much of their stuff over the years and even the AR I built my wife many years ago was from PSA parts, although some things have been changed on it since then. However with PSA stuff, sometimes I’ve had some issues that make me scratch my head. Regardless…. That’s one heck of a value with the pistol as well. Man I gotta stop by so I can see those chickens! Completely agree. I'm in love with the simplicity and lack of spray paint. At first I only added a $16 Strike Industries extended latch for the charging handle but I couldnt help myself. I later added a Bushnell TRS-26 red dot for a larger sight picture and a Streamlight HL-X on an Amazon long inline mount. The mount puts the lens past the A2 front sight and gives just the right amount of room to use my thumb for the light. No tape switch and wires just the momentary/constant tailcap switch. Still a very basic rifle setup thats entirely low budget.

There's a good chance one of them you sold had issues. The customer probably just contacted PSA directly. I've bought 8 PSA rifles and had a few bent sights and 1 that had unfinished feed ramps and one that was sent in the wrong color but they always resolved the issues. For the price I'm willing to deal with the problems. That's 3 out 8 had problems but all are good to go now. So if you have been selling PSA for a long time there is very little chance that all of them had no issues. You just didn't hear about them . If I bought one from a gun dealer and it wasn't right I would contact PSA directly, not the dealer

I love affordable guns that work and work very well.. when I was younger (22) I purchased a Springfield 1911 for $1,100 bucks and I said to myself never again will I pay that much for a single firearm. There are options out there that work very well, and allow us budget minded folks to build up a nice collection without paying an arm and a leg for them. Granted that I know $1,100 for some doesn’t seem like a lot of money, and yes I can afford it (thank the lord for my blessing) but I can’t justify it. I’m not going into combat hopefully ever, I like to go out and shoot and have a variety of firearms that I love and most are only range toys. And yes they can be used in an shtf situation if I have to but I have my Glock 21 and a maverick 88 for home defense, and Glock 26 or 19 for ccw. Other than that I buy guns for range toys and to practice. It’s just how I see it, and I know I have people out there that think the same way, and others that disagree and that’s fine, I just love the idea of the people owning guns regardless of whatever you can afford or justify spending. Stay safe people

Cheap doesn't mean bad and expensive doesn't mean good. I bought a Diamondback DB15 over a PSA because? Diamondback makes their parts in house and even most expensive AR15 don't do that. Placed an order at my gun shop for a PSA PA 15, should be in by Wednesday? Clearly that round was bad and not an issue with your firearm, bad ammo and bad magazines will stop any firearm. About your comment at around 12:23 new guns fail, expecting 100% reliability all the time is unrealistic. Most manufactures recommend a break in period of 300 rounds of fmj ammunition. Les Baer Custom 1911 I own recommend 500 rounds while my Glock 19 and 30 had no issues. Okay, let me address a lot of people talking about stuff they don't know. First question. Who actually knows what mail spec is. Second question, who knows what the tolerance is for a Daniel defense, lower and or upper? Third question why would you not just be happy for anybody to buy any sort of firearm and support the second amendment? The more people out there with AR-15s means it's harder for them to justify taking them away. By the way, Mil spec refers to the type of aluminum being used, the tolerances that have to be held and the finish or coating being used. If you want a good inexpensive rifle, start with a PSA change the trigger, the bolt carrier group and the barrel and possibly the buffer and spring. This will yield a very comparable rifle. Minus the name and the expense. Spend your left over money on a decent optic and other gear.

I bought an assembled lower, assembled m-lok free floating railed upper with 16" barrel, BCG, Strike Industries CH, 5 Magpul Mags and a set of MBUS flip up sights all for $620 last Christmas. PSA and other companies like them are 100% putting their money and time where their mouth is in concern with 2A, which is why I choose PSA. I cleaned the gun and lubed it when I put it together/bought it. I have almost 1000 rounds through it with 0 failures and maybe a light lubing once so far. It's my first rifle and I am a noob, but the thing fucks, I love my rifle. I have added things this year, Red Dot, Hand Stop and a sling, but the thing still cost me under $1000. God I love America.

Great video with solid information and demonstration. I will brag a little so that you know that I know what I'm talking about...I was in the army for 29 years (12 of which I was a Small Arms Instructor), was on a tactical team (aka "SWAT") for 10 of my 12 years in law enforcement, I have owned multiple rifles and pistols since 1988. I have built about eight AR's and the last four AR's are based on the PSA M4 profile. I don't see a need to spend thousands of dollars on a tool that works great for $400. The last couple of times I did a "build", it wasn't really a build, sad to say because picking parts used to be the fun aspect of AR building. I just ordered PSA M4 uppers and standard PSA lowers. With delivery and FFL charges, they are usually around $425 total. They have spoiled me from doing "builds". I put a Bushnell AR Optics 3-12x40 on my last one and am having a blast blowing up half-gallon milk jugs out to around 500 yards. Accurate, consistent, reliable, and you can modify them however you want because of mil-spec. Why buy anything else, I say.

I love stuff like this, I feel like too many of us these days get too wrapped up in the minutia of the firearms, and equate wants with needs. Too many people that have it in their minds that a gun like this wouldn't be useful in a practical sense. Just like everyone else I love my high end rifles, my POF-415 edge is my baby. All the bells and whistles I would expect from a $2,000 plus rifle. It is my number one. But at the end of the day, the guy with the $500 PSA is going to smoke my ass 10 times out of 10 as long as 3 things come into play. His gun is reliable enough to go boom every time he wants it to. His gun is at least somewhat accurate. And his training is better than mine. We get so caught up in 'can my rifle go 30k rounds before I need to change the barrel' even though most of us can't afford to blow that much ammo in our lifetime. It's damn awesome when a rifle can last that long, but it's certainly not an absolute requirement. Same with accuracy. People act like they're going to be shooting someone with their AR in 5.56/.223 a thousand yards. So that rifle needs to be 1MOA or less. I exaggerate of course, but most of us average gun people. Our limit will be 200 to 400 yards. A few of us will push past 400 up to 600. And only the top percentile of shooters will even have a range to push guns past 600 yards. at 300 yards a 3 MOA rifle will put rounds within a circle with the circumference of 9 inches. Unless your battling hobbits and dwarves, this shouldn't be an issue. Only snipers and DMR's go for headshots at range. So aim for the chest and you will hit, if you don't it was probably your fault anyway. It might not be the nicest shooting experience, it might not be the most accurate or built to handle the blazing deserts or freezing tundra. But as long as it shoots and hits what you shoot, that thing is just as dead as the thing that got killed by the $4,000 rifle.

While it's not my "go to," AR there is a LOT of value in PSAR-15s, or most PSA products (I also own a KS-47 & GF4 PSAK). While it's not my Geissele or SOLGW + a LaRue 2ST, that doesn't mean squat to whether they're effective or kit I'd feel "safe" with. Their QC used to suck, but has gotten INFINITELY better in recent years. That said, they are still a high-volume manufacturer, so I'd thoroughly test whatever you buy from them (be it premium or BF sale combo) before trusting your life to it. Having said that, mine have all performed quite well, and my KS-47 is THE go-to hog gun in our house.

I have a lot of ARs (that I lost, along with the rest of my blasters in a boating accident) and my favorites were always the budget builds that I put together. Anything from Daniel Defense, Christianson to PSA. I'm confident my builds run better than an off the shelf big box "top tier" blasters and I've beaten a lot of people that had the idea that if they have the most expensive shit, that will give them the edge. What it boils down to is you need to know your equipment inside and out and what most people fail to do is train with their shit. Any time I compete now, I run the ugliest, hodgepodge frankensteined AR. People are in awe when I beat them and those that perform better than me, I blame my blaster. It's a win win! Hahaha

@DocTango
@DocTango 10 ай бұрын
@@bert3566 I don’t really have any go to brands anymore. I look for quality (but affordable) parts, usually opting for blems and close out sales. More often than not, I’ll collect parts over the year and then build something out of what I got. I’ll usually give it as a gift for one of my kids. But the parts I tend to use are as follows: Receivers: I prefer billet over forged receivers, but either work fine as long as it’s done right. Stripped uppers and lowers are pretty hard to mess up. Get a decent micrometer and check the receivers before you take possession. Check how tight they fit together, although some receivers I picked up had a nylon polymer tension screw that pressed up against the upper to take the slop out, so tightness might not be an issue if you have that feature. I’ve used the “wedge” thing and that’s hit or miss for me. I’m always paranoid it’s gonna somehow make its way loose and jam something inside the receiver. It never has, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking it might. Barrels and barrel nuts: Barrels and barrel nuts are the parts I will spend a little bit more money on. I prefera 223 Wylde or 308 cut chamber when building an AR15 or AR10 pattern blaster. I have other calibers, but I’m assuming we’re talking about these ones. I picked up a proof 16” medium contour chromoly barrel this past Monday for $100. The twist rate is personal preference or, ammo/mission specific. Gas Blocks: As for gas blocks, I use adjustable gas blocks with a minimum of 2 set screws. If it’s something I’m sure I won’t change later, or I need it to be apocalypse-proof, I’ll also pin the gas block. Lately, I’ve been addicted to riflespeed adjustable gas blocks, but again, I only buy them when they’re having a huge sale. I actually just got notification that my order shipped. Got the RS75 5.8” with straight gas tube and vice block for $160 last week. You could probably save a few bucks by getting a POF Dictators adjustable gas block. I only run adjustable gas blocks because I go back and forth between suppressed and loud AF and I prefer riflespeed because I can change gas settings with needing to use a tool. Furniture: Furniture is whatever your preference, I like magpul stuff because the rifles I offload usually sell faster and for more money when they have magpul furniture. Other than that, I could probably use a dried up dog turd for a grip and still run my rig effectively. It’s all in the training. Triggers: I modify my own from off the shelf parts. I’m pretty sure they all come off the same factory line. In the ARs I sell, I replace my “custom” triggers for a drop in because of liability reasons. I usually use CMMG or Rise because they’re decent for the money. If you know what you’re doing, nothing beats a custom trigger that you polished, but if it’s your first time, be very careful, there’s a fine line between awesome and accidental discharge. Handguards: Handguards, I’ve been using the Midwest industries unbranded knockoffs from ohhunt. They fit my steel Midwest industries barrel nuts and they work fine for what I’m doing. I’m not falling out of aircrafts and rolling down mountains anymore. Not running lasers. Maybe at most, I’m putting a light on the rail. I like, but haven’t tried aero precision barrel and handguards yet. Everyone I know that has one, paired with their upper, is extremely happy with them. If you’re planning on taking your rifle to do sexy shit, don’t do what I’ve done with my rifle builds, buy quality shit. If you’re doing anything else that won’t result in you pushing up daisies, the cheap stuff works just fine. That being said, for my home defense blaster, I’m running a Daniel defense hodgepodge upper and lower that I pieced together with a Timney DH3 trigger. Our weapons sergeant used DD parts and barrels in our team blasters when I was with 7th SFG. Never had a problem with any of my issued gear. You could go with an off the shelf DDM4 and you’ll probably never need to buy another rifle, but I had the parts laying around, so why not build it, right? My wife’s personal blaster is a PWS MK116, all OEM. Both blasters run like rapped apes, but so do my ugly ass competition guns. I guess it’s all about what your objective is. If you can tell me more about what you’re going to use it for, I can be a little more specific. Sorry if my response wasn’t what you were looking for. If you want to try out the ohhunt handguards, send me a message and I’ll forward you a referral code coupon thing that’ll take 10% off your order. Fuck, this turned out to be a long response, sorry about that.

@@DocTango This is good stuff!! To be real with you I'm fairly new to ARs, I've heard from people to just stop looking and get a DDM4 or "you can't go wrong with an LWRC" but I really gotta get a hands on feet at this point. Others have said the cheaper stuff is just about as good as the "high end" stuff. I'm into mountain bikes and I know the market well, so, likewise, I could go on forever with bike components and what not. I'd like to get a couple ARs for home defense and occasional range days. Funds aren't a problem at the moment but I do enjoy to get into the nitty gritty of things. I've looked at the PSA sabre, jakl, DB15, Stag 15. @@bert3566 it’s your money, don’t let others tell you what to do with it. As far as cheap vs expensive parts, you can get good parts that are still cost effective. The good stuff is good for a reason and it mostly has to do with quality control and marketing. There aren’t as many companies actually making their own components. Not as many as one would think anyway. If you’re just getting into it, I’d recommend buying a middle of the road AR and when you’re ready to spend some money, build your own out of the parts you want. Be careful though, this shit gets expensive. LOL. I don’t think any of those brands you’ve looked into are bad. They all make quality stuff in every price point and their middle of the road tiers should be less than a grand. As for the jakl, that’s not really an AR. I had one and still have a side charger from Foxtrot Mike. They’re ok, but you really can’t tune them like you can a traditional AR. Once the novelty of having a side charger with a folding stock wore off, I got a bad case of buyers remorse. I have a Daniel Defense for a defensive setup, but i recently did up a Matrix Aerospace lower with a BCM BCG, criterion CHF medium contoured 11.5” barrel attached to a Rainier milspec nothing special flat top receiver. A riflespeed RS7521 gas block, CMMG milspec trigger, H2 buffer, SBA3 pistol brace, some no name mlok handguard, olight pl-pro Valkyrie light, and a swampfox raider 1x optic. The barrel, BCG, and gas block were the most expensive parts. Everything else is middle tier at best. All in, I’m under $800. I would probably use this over the DD just because I know if I have to use it, it’ll end up sitting in an evidence locker until after the trial. Sometimes those take years to end. By the time you’re ready to build, you’d have already figured out what works best in your budget. I can almost guarantee you’ll be hooked and find yourself wanting a milling machine and lathe… If it were me, I would invest in the tools you’ll need to build an AR. Definitely a decent pair of calipers and a torque wrench. I wouldn’t be surprised if you already have a good torque wrench in your biking tools. Use google to convert Newton meters to inch pounds and you’re golden. As for making videos, I’m not that great at public speaking and my editing skills are sub par at best. I have no interest in buying the equipment or learning how to edit videos. Any money invested in that would be wasted on me. lol

I have a PSA freedom AR15 I’m turning into a rattle can GWOT clone-ish looking thing, have out about 1000 rounds through it. thing shot great from the start, didn’t even have a break in which surprised me a bit. Could be because they are a tad over gassed from factory but that no big deal. It’s accurate with Winchester 223 & 556 and haven’t had a jam yet through 2 shooting session and purposefully not cleaning it or doing anything like adding any oil/lube. I have a nice Sig m400SDI X, and yeah that gun is nice, feels a little smoother but that’s not my tops around truck gun I don’t care about smashing up. PSA is GREAT for that which still working well. So in my conclusion for what I have shot so far, is it the BEST? No. Does it work and bring modern 2A to the everyday citizen at a GREAT price? Yes absolutely it does. I can’t recommend PSA products enough for someone who is on a budget. what’s funny is the same thing they had happen where the bolt went I’ve the round and dented it actually happened to me on my SIG one time, but hasn’t happened to me on the PSA. I think it is actually a mag feeding issue. It hit the round forward a bit, the butt of the round pushed down and the bolt went over the top of the brass and smashed it on the feed ramp. To me that reads mag issue.

I was at a range with mine. I was with some friends and they all had Daniel defense, knights, noveske etc. They are gun snobs and would never dare be seen in public with a psa rifle. Im the type to spend 500 on a rifle and take the money saved to buy ammo and gear🤷‍♂️

As much as they try to rectrict the 2A, people people keep pushing back. The restriction push has made guns more prevalent. 20 years ago no one had a 15s. Now every one has atleast one. Same way with armor, no one had body armor. Now most people i know have atleast 1 set.

I love my psa15. Owned it now for 3 months. Put a red dot on it for a grand total of $475 out the door. Cheap great budget build. These 2 items were on clearance or psa daily deal. With roughly 2k rounds through this set up, it's been flawless. Break down is easy. Cleaning is easy. My son (15yrs old) can shoot this with ease. I highly recommend psa15 for anyone.

I’ve built 2. Only issue I’ve had was with the firing pin retaining pin. Both had to be replaced. One of them bound the firing pin and slam fired a mag dump. Super cheap fix and I now keep enough kits to to fix small issues for years. I have a S&W MP15 and I think they’re all close in quality each having advantages. One of the PSA’s has had tons of upgrades now and would be closer to their higher end guns. I buy stuff from PSA just to support them even when I don’t need anything. Fantastic company.

I don't own a PSA firearm but I'm glad they're an option for those on a budget who don't want absolute trash. When I was in the market for my first AR about three years ago, I was sort of afraid of anything below $600 as being cheap for a reason and I couldn't afford anything over $1000 either. So I got a Sig M400 Tread for $800. No sights though so another $150 for a Sig Romeo MSR red dot so I was just under the $1000 price point. I've swapped or upgraded lots of things bit by bit over the past three years (improved handguard from Sig, Aero Precision muzzle device and charging handle plus a ALG ACT trigger). It has performed flawlessly thus far (3-4K rds) but the idea that I could've gotten something just as reliable for half the price is an eye opener for sure.

The US government pasy about $750-800 for a M4 for basic infantry and service members to use in combat. I own three above $1,500 ARs - I know the cost was tolerance checks and QA/QC inspection of parts. The PSA carbines simply take basic parts , they batch test and they do the minimum ( proof test firing ) - the basic parts are plentiful and common enough to mix and match for repairs across the board with other manufacturers I Hage a PA -15 premium midlength ($750) and a 4140cm barreled nitride " Freedom" midlength ($525) . I have dis covered that both PSA carbines run 1.5" to 2" on white box 55 gr .223 and xm 193 ammo just like my LMT, my BCM midlength , my Colt 6940 my fiancée's Daniel's Defense M4v7(* was mine!) PSA locks out a lemon every now and then but for the most part, their rifles/ carbines WORK and suit what 95% of us need for sport/ target/ small game hunting / self defense

Budget rifle from PSA is OK, but spend just a bit more($40 - $70) and get it just the way you want it, free float handguard, Magpul furniture, back up sights. Keep looking until the combo YOU like come up!

Some folks like the fixed FSB and don’t need the free float. Whatever makes you happy for your preference. If you want the free float absolutely wait for that one to come up. As for me, I’m happier with 20” uppers and the A2 rifle stock but I appreciate the adjustable stocks for fitting other shooters
