There is a major difference in the two men. Gordon Ramsey is a MasterChef with his own restaurants first then TV host, while Jamie Oliver was a Assistant Sous Chef that was good on camera. I remember reading that Oliver was aggrieved and felt that Ramsey didn't respect him as an equal, Ramsey replied that he wasn't his equal.

In traditional homes in the rual parts of China, as well as India, Malaysia and Indonesia they often have an outdoor wood fired kitchen. It helps to keep the house from getting too hot in the summer, because those types of homes don't have air conditioning. Also, because of the strong smell of some Malaysian and Indonesian ingredients it's better to keep the kitchen seperate from the rest of the house.

Wood or clay stoves like the one Gordon uses. I remember seeing that in my grandma's outdoor kitchen in the Philippines. She also has gigantic woks for fiestas so the outdoor sink is way deeper than the indoor one. I say outdoor, but it has walls and a roof. It's just detached from the main house with huge windows all around for ventilation.

I can personally verify Uncle Roger's claim on indoor and outdoor kitchens. And he's pretty much spot on. There are several good reasons for this, too. In the case for special occasions, both kitchens are used for different purposes. Indoor kitchen is used for lighter cooking or low-heat cooking. But in essence, the indoor kitchen is mostly used for preparations for what will happen in the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchen is where the REAL magic happens. You get foods like fried rice, fried chicken, fried fish, the whole nine yards with all that good fried stuff. But the most important reason why outdoor kitchens are used for high heat cooking is simply this: Cook high heat foods inside the house and your furniture is gonna be left smelling like fried chicken or fried rice. And no resident wants that. I live in a Filipino household and this is common where I live (Hawaii) and where my parents and my wife came from. In the Philippine provinces where my parents and my wife came from, this is almost everywhere. The same could be said in Hawaii and some U.S. states. Yes, my family do cook BBQ outdoors but for us, there is so much more than just that. Plus I know some Japanese immigrants that are living here in Hawaii that adopted the indoor kitchen and outdoor kitchen system and they say it is an extremely efficient system for cooking for special occasions. You might think this is a Filipino-only thing but it isn't. We're just one of the many ethnic groups in Southeast Asia that practice this. This is practiced in South China, India, and pretty much all Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines (REPRESENT!!), Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, etc.

@ 9:56 FUN FACTS (from a fellow MALAYSIAN) SAMBAL (Malay word for Chili Paste) is a chili SAUCE (not Jam ya...) or PASTE, typically made from a mixture of a variety of chili peppers with secondary ingredients such as shrimp paste, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, and lime juice. Sambal is an Indonesian loan-word of Javanese origin (sambel). It originated from the culinary traditions of Indonesia, and is also an integral part of the cuisines of Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Singapore. It has also spread through overseas Indonesian populations to the Netherlands and Suriname. Various recipes of sambals usually are served as hot and spicy condiments for dishes, such as lalab (raw vegetables), ikan bakar (grilled fish), ikan goreng (fried fish), ayam goreng (fried chicken), ayam penyet (smashed chicken), iga penyet (ribs) and various soto soup. There are 212 variants of sambal in Indonesia, with most of them originated from Java. RENDANG is a Minang dish originating from the Minangkabau region in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It has spread across Indonesian cuisine to the cuisines of neighbouring Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. Rendang is often described as a rich dish of meat - most commonly beef (rendang daging) - that has been slow cooked and braised in a coconut milk seasoned with a herb and spice mixture, until the liquids evaporate and the meat turns dark brown and tender, becoming caramelized and infused with rich flavours.As the signature dish of Minangkabau culture, rendang is traditionally served at ceremonial occasions to honour guests during festive events; such as wedding feasts and Lebaran or Hari Raya (Indonesian popular words for both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha).[8] Rendang is also traditionally served among the Malay community in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, as well as the Maranao in the Philippines. Rendang is officially recognised as one of Indonesia's national dishes. Six types of rendang preparations have also been designated as intangible cultural heritage by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.

I just came across your reaction, and had to laugh at the comments about outdoor kitchens in Canada. I live in SW Ontario, and have been building an outdoor kitchen, including a proper wok burner/station, for a while now. Back when I was in grad school, my neighbours were a family from Vietnam, and would often be cooking out in their driveway with a portable propane burner, and a ridiculously well seasoned wok. When I first saw then doing this, I just shrugged it off as "weird"...and may have inquired about how they were storing the propane tanks (it was a townhouse complex, so they literally shared a wall with me). Then they taught me how to cook some of the dishes, and I learned the difference that a proper wok station can make. The usual Canadian electric/gas ranges don't even compare, and it's taken me 10 years to finally be able to have the time, resources...and a detached home to avoid sidelong glances from unenlightened neighbours, but I can now experience the joys of a proper wok hei all year round. ...in theory anyways. Between and Jan-Mar, the outdoor kitchen doesn't exist.

For other "fuiyoh" equivalents in Japanese, there's "suge." (すげー) I believe it's a slang pronunciation of "sugoi" (凄い), meaning something like "incredible" or "unbelievable" or "terrific." For a Japanese equivalent of "haiyaa," maybe "yada" (やだ)? Or if you're feeling completely fatalistic, you could try "shiyouganai" (仕様がない). It means something like "oh well, can't do anything about it."

Having 2 kitchens is common in Southeast Asia especially among Chinese residents but it's fairly adopted by a majority. There's a Clean Kitchen and a Dirty Kitchen (somewhat indoor/outdoor because it needs to be well ventilated) and then the outdoor grilling area. So it's 3 key areas just for cooking 😅 the clean kitchen is usually expensive looking, merely to entertain and impress guests and you can do your light cooking there too. The heavy cooking needs to be done in the Dirty kitchen so the smell of strong spices stays there. But this planning isnt applicable to small apartments or condo units (unless you modify it by buying 2 units to make your space bigger 😅)
@ShiroKage009
@ShiroKage009 2 жыл бұрын
In South-West Asia (Gulf nations) an "outside kitchen" is basically a separate part of the house where we cook most of our food to prevent the smell from going all across the house. That's why the inside kitchen is kept for lighter cooking.

This Channel will grow huge ... great job Steven and Peach. Nobody in countries wif 4 seasons will have outdoor kitchen ... SE Asia everyday is just rain or shine so Outdoor kitchen is normal. Fuiyoh is kinda like "whoa" "wow" "Sugoi", "Maji". But Sugoi is more for Amazing, Awesome and Maji is more for "fer real" if i'm not mistaken. Haiyaa is more towards disappointed. In English equivalent best I can think of is Fk for both. Fuiyoh situations just use "Holy Fk" and Haiyaa just use "Fk" but drag the word to 5 seconds... like fkkkkk or just use "crap". In Japan bcus everything is so efficient probably seldom ppl gets disappointed so mabbe no "haiyaa" situations in public ... but privately many ppl in Japan seems to keep disappointment to themself instead of expressing it out. This can cause a lot of problems bcus not able to express themself ... too much disapointments can eat into them... making them depressed into "hikikomori" or "jouhatsu" situations. Uncle Roger uses lotsa "why so weak" .. this is very common in Malaysia bcus it's kinda a way the parents motivate the kids to be stronger or more adaptable to situations. In Msia due to corruption and super inefficient ... disappointments is just a way of life .. very small normal thing. Generally in Asia super efficient countries more competitive the ppl are unhappier bcus they expect certain things or more while 3rd world countries the ppl don't expect much just "haiyaa" and continue wif life ... :)

There is a very big difference between Jaime Oliver and Gordon, about 16 Michelin stars worth of difference.

He's filming in the middle of nowhere cause it's for a tv show, "Gordon Ramsay uncharted" where he travels to different countries to learn their cuisine. So that location there is the same place where he cooked for a group of people, looks random but it's not really if you'd seen the show. Ramsay also has the 2nd or 3rd most michelin star of all the chefs in the world, he's an actual chef, unlike jamie oliver who is a fraud.
