There was no angle to show that he fumbled before breaking the plane, at least what is on this video. It definitely looked close for sure. When his foot touches the goal line, his hand with the ball is already ahead of it and the ball starts to slide out. Called a TD on field, keep it a TD.

@@BDalms You simply cannot blame the refs. Michigan State was down 16… 16 points… Michigan allowed a 16 point comeback and then continued to choke not being able to convert at all by the end of the game. When Michigan NEEDED to get a stop, they choked. When they absolutely NEEDED To put points on the board, they choked. By the 4th quarter Michigan had completely fallen apart mentally. They’re a weak football organization, they always have been. They’ve never been good in big games, and have always checked out too early. Michigan State has had the Wolverines number for over a decade now for that very reason. The refs had nothing to do with that, and blaming them is a lame excuse. There’s another angle that very much makes look like it’s a fumble. You have to sync two angles together using a cross-referenceable point, which is available. The view from the back of the end zone shows the ball is loose as his front foot hits the line. The other angle not shown here is up and down the goal line, unlike the angle from behind that’s shown here. You can’t see the football in the up and down the line angle, but at the instant his foot hits the line, it looks like his entire upper torso is out of the end zone. It’s really close. Needed to be looked at frame by frame to see if his upper torso was out when his foot comes down. Instead, they said call stands after about 30 seconds of review.

Based on the footage provided, the ruling certainly appears to be a fumble prior to the ball crossing the plane. Why? Because at 0:52 you can see that the ball is leaving the crease of his elbow prior to the ball carrier's left foot crossing the plane of the end zone; and ball carrier's left foot was ahead of the ball at the time. Therefore the fumble was initiated prior to the ball crossing the plane of the end zone. To those who say they would be upset if the touchdown were taken away: (1) the rules are not bias--each team plays under the same rules; (2) the ball carrier failed to meet the very simple condition for scoring, which is maintaining possession of the ball as it crosses the plane of the end zone. I assume this was ruled a touchdown due to some doubt existing as to whether or not the ball started leaving the crease of the elbow prior to crossing the plane, and that's fine.

have to agree that without a view down the line, no way to tell if the ball is over the line or not before movement is visible. he just appeared to relax his arm and wasn't being one of those doofuses that purposely drops the ball at the goal line so no need to call him out here.

Yeah, the call was right. You could make a case that the ball was still in contact with his hand when he crossed the plane, even though it wasn't cradled within his arm, or against his body. The process of losing control occurred after he crossed it, meaning that the ball was no longer in direct contact with his hand.
