@@batfleckforever3594 The word "keytar" is actually a recent term, like "yacht rock." Believe it or not, nobody called it a "keytar" back in the '80s. They were called "remote controllers" or "remote keyboards" or "strap-on controllers." One company came out with a controller with the brand name "Keytar" (which actually wasn't a big seller compared to its competition models) but no one was able to use it because it was trademarked.

It's a keytar. It's same as any old keyboard, but worn like a guitar. Keytar was ( like Kleenex) a brand name, so remote synth, portable synth, shoulder synth, strap synth were a few of the names I'd heard flying around at the time. It's only 7 years between this and the original. I thought it was too soon to do a remake, but I was wrong!!!

One year between April Wine's "Doin' It Right" and Powder Blues' original. AW was a bit better but it was fairly close.

But the sound is distinctly different, right? 7 years in the same decade is like between doowop rock n roll and acid rock.

This song is 1980s new wave, while the original version was more of a 1970s disco.

The original _was_ 70s Disco, seeing it was written in 1979.

Releasing a cover just seven years after the original is normally risky and does not guarantee a hit but these guys are great and delivered a smash that reached #6 in the USA. Thank you Aussies. You are the greatest.
@MrRobarino2 жыл бұрын
"Normally risky"?....no, not at all. 7 years was not risky at all. Do you have any idea how often a cover version is released soon after the original? For example, Eric Clapton released his version of "I Shot the Sheriff" 1 year after Bob Marley did. Proud Mary by Tina Turner, 1 year after the original. Girl's Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper, 4 years after the original. Several of Van Halen's early hits were cover songs. Heck, Kiss by Prince was covered by both Art of Noise and Tom Jones while Prince's version was still on the charts and both covers made the top 20. Everyone from Nine inch Nails to Elvis Presley have done similar. If anything, covering a hit song so soon after the original is far less risky then making an original song.
@Chelaxim Жыл бұрын
@@MrRobarino They ended up being a one hit wonder though. At least Alien Ant Farm was a one hit wonder with a MJ song. These guys became one hit wonders of another one hit wonder.
