Great point on the dangling cast iron vent - it will try to pull itself right out of roof and hundreds of pounds can come crashing down! For about $11 at HD you can get a 4 in. Riser Clamp and secure it at an appropriate place while you work. On my house we left about 2 feet of cast iron coming through the roof and replaced everything else (much of it was cracked) with PVC. Cutting old cast iron is REALLY hard. My buddy had one of those big cutters with the chain that raps around and snaps it. For areas where we couldn't get access i think i used a 9" Diablo Steel Demon blade on the sawzall (If you're doing a lot of cuts buy extra).
@goodun2974Ай бұрын
The only practical way for a do it yourselfer to cut cast iron is with a reinforced carbide or carborundum wheel on a circular saw and that throws out so many sparks you are likely to burn the house down. If you can get a plumbing savvy friend to do it for you with the right tools you'll be better off in the long run.
@patarmstrong3582Ай бұрын
Carborundum grit Sawzall blades work. Also, cutoff wheel in an angle grinder if you have the access. There are some newer carbide Sawzall blades, too but haven't tried them on cast iron.

@@goodun2974 All he needs to do is rent a soil pipe cutting tool from his local rental house. Chain wraps around pipe. Tighten the tool and the pipe will snap clean with no sparks. Easy Peasy.
@goodun2974Ай бұрын
@snaredude56 , That's assuming you can rent one. Around here the only rental place that was worth a darn was True Value hardware, but now that the parent company is declaring bankruptcy, they stopped renting tools.
@snaredude56Ай бұрын
@@goodun2974 That may be the case where you live, but why would you assume that's the case everywhere? If he can't rent one, then it's time to use a cutting wheel, but to say the only way to do it is the cutting wheel just isn't true if you can rent the correct tool. He's in Nashville, so I doubt he would have any problem renting one.

@johnwilliamson467Ай бұрын
For me cutting cast iron pipe with a cut off wheel not a sawsall IMHO. Floor heat for the bathroom is great in the winter .
@PsionicAudioАй бұрын
Floor heating is a big expense with everything else. I’m going to just go with actually insulating the floor and not having gaps between the room and the outside air. ;) Cutoff wheel - you mean on an angle grinder? I’ll be getting one and a reciprocating saw soon. I saw videos of people using a big chain cutter, but that’s something I’d rent rather than buy, and rental tools can be in scary condition. That thing looks too close to a chainsaw for me to want to use one I didn’t own and maintain.
@goodun2974Ай бұрын
@@PsionicAudio, If you're gonna cut it with an angle grinder or a carbide wheel on a circular saw, be really careful because those things will throw off a lot of sparks. You'll need eye protection too, but anyway we don't want you to burn the house down.

Insulating the crawl walls, and cavity next to the outside (rim joist/band joist) will really help and is often overlooked. Batt insulation can be cut to hang down on the foundation wall from the floor joist cavity.

@Strumbum01Ай бұрын
+1 on this…ditch it all while it’s easily accessible, vents too.
@PsionicAudioАй бұрын
I’d love to. But those vents go through the roof and I don’t have a long enough ladder to do it myself or a big enough budget to have the flashing redone.
@Strumbum01Ай бұрын
@@PsionicAudio that’s understandable, Lyle. Maybe you can replace what will be covered up and save the accessible sections for another day. Good luck, sir!
@patarmstrong3582Ай бұрын
Replacing the vent pipes is an unnecessary expense and would result in much more plumbing noise. Vertical cast iron is seldom problematic but, the horizontal sections cause problems. I think it could be 2 Ferncos and utilize the existing vents, while building the PVC as you want around it. You have vent access for 3 openings from both ends- perfect. See what your plumber says.
@mikewithers299Ай бұрын
@@PsionicAudiothose vent stacks can easily be replaced without touching the roof flashing. I did this to mine years ago. Cast and pvc are about the same diameter and it will slip inside the flashing (called a "boot"). As long as there is nothing holding that pipe like bracing, you can slide out the cast and slip in pvc. Check your attic for anything that might prevent the pipe from coming down, like a bell (hub) above the bathroom ceiling. Vertical cracks on cast iron vent stacks do happen. I've seen them, and that's why I replaced mine. Cracks become leaks eventually.
