UMD movies were a godsend to kids who had to go on long family journies, just imagine finally being able to fit a portable DVD player in your pocket! the PSP pretty much still to this day manages to be the most compact portable disc reader that is capable of storing music, videos, photos and games to memory. I can't think of anything else that does all that whilst fitting in your pocket. personally i think Sony is terrible at noticing when they've hit something great in the portable market; UMDs would've been even more sweet if they weren't exclusive to the PSP, I would love to see stuff like UMD music players that can rip to MP3, or simply UMD video players.

@ericbazinga
@ericbazinga 4 жыл бұрын
@@ekulipse1133 Smartphones weren't really a thing back then (keep in mind this came out in 2005), and PSP also supported MP4 video playback (which in retrospect probably wasn't helpful when you're trying to sell customers on UMDs and they're loading their ripped DVDs onto the MemoryStick instead).
@ericbazinga
@ericbazinga 4 жыл бұрын
100% agreed, there needed to be more UMD-capable devices. Lowering the cost a bit would've really helped, too. It's a hard sell when it's the same price as DVD, but if it's lower then you'll garner some more interest. I would've loved to see a UMD music player that hearkened back to the MiniDisc players before it, or a slim UMD video player about the size of a PSP Go that included AV out cables in the box. Video rental chains could've taken advantage of this too. You could let someone rent a few UMD movies for a week for $10, and they can enjoy those movies while on a flight or a long car ride.

ekulipse Back then the IPod Video was the closest you could get to a smartphone with big storage. I think that you could get one with 120gb. The iPhone came out on in -07 and only had like 4 or 8 gigs in the first models. Plus that the IPod video screen was very small, like half of a regular smartphone. The psp slim with its card reader, ability to play very good games and watch movies on a pretty big screen etc. was like the ultimate shit in -05.

UMD movie junkie here; I have over 100 UMD movies! When I purchased my PSP (silver) in ‘08, it came with National Treasure and I loved how crisp the video was. Then, I found out that GameStop was running a Christmas special (at that time) with a variety of UMD movies for just $5. That’s what jumpstarted my movie buying frenzy 😉 I still have & love my PSP too 👍 Btw, love your channel!

Who would want to collect them? Easy answer... (More or less what you said at the end of the video) The cinematic version of a game collector. I am not a gamer, but I am a cinema collector. Instead of having every video game format & console, I have every (with a few super rare exceptions) movie format & it's player (21 film formats to be exact). Including a PSP 3000 that I do not own a single game for, but collect UMD Video releases for. I even have a backlit GBA SP that I only use to watch GBA Videos on (there is another topic that would make a good followup). So there are those of us out there who are the cinema equivalents of the (more popular) gamer/retro-gamer, and we love UMD video!

The DLC concept was the first and final nail in the coffin for me. After 2010 buying games regularly - at least on a monthly or tri monthly basis was no longer...Unless they were old titles off ebay etc. Shelling out $90-100 for a half baked product where I'm expected to pay extra to download shit that should already be on the disc is just way too much. Back then 'DLC' came in the form of expansion packs which at least gave you a physical tangible product to keep rather than just a virtual copy. Dont get me wrong, having virtual copies is excellent for both backup and portability, but if there's nothing physically to show for it, the product feels incredibly cheap and rather worthless. It's like cryptocurrency vs hard currency/gold standard.

Yes, but GBA Cartridge had almost no space. So it was not possible to put movies, but only less than 1h of video. So usually they just put 2 episodes from a cartoon. And watch cartoons episodes is less attractive than movies.

I don't have time to figure out what I want to watch on my device and convert it to a format it can see, transfer it over a slow 2.0 connection, and hope it all fits on the flash card on the device. With UMDs it's so much easier!!

I dunno, UMDs might have taken off if there was a more "bang for your buck" factor to it like collections/trilogies on 1 disc or included free like the digital copies today. But mini-discs and mini-movies on a mini-screen have mini-appeal and should have had a mini-price, and therefore now have mini-attraction as mini-collectors items. In my mini-opinion.

I always thought there should be way more live concert UMDs. Watching a few songs on a lunch break or car ride made more sense to me than watching parts of a movie. Also thought that it was a big mistake for Sony to "forget" a TV connection for the PSP-1000. Nintendo had been doing it since the original GameBoy, you would think that Sony would have done it right away too.

I collect them! I think what made the figurative lightbulb go on in my head was looking beyond UMD as something just for gaming and viewing it as a “lost” video format akin to CED, Laserdisc or even Betamax (which was itself another Sony attempted format). Looking at it that way made collecting quite fun. Interestingly, there are some films, like the anime “Perfect Blue”, which are long out of print on DVD, but available on UMD for a fraction of the cost. Taking into consideration that a PSP 3000+Component cables+AC adaptor means you have an easy to set up movie player that is good to go even on a modern TV, it all becomes that much more appealing.

I have around 200 personally. Although I wasn't collecting just to collect them because they're unique. For 12 years I was a Booth Attendant at a local college. Parking booths are not large. So you can only fit a very small radio or hand held TV. Or in my case a PSP. I also ended up buying 10-12 8gb ProDuo memory cards. The largest size at the time in the mid and late 2000's. And also $100 a piece at the time so ended up costing me $1000-$1400. Which I have my entire MP4 library on. Movies and TV shows. Which I had to covert using a PSP video converter program on my PC. And which I still have. And a 4gb memory card for music. And one 8gb specifically just for videogames and game saves. My PSP fit nicely in-between the register and the side of the booth. And all I had to do was hit the pause button (X button) when I would get a customer or need to direct traffic. It was great I had entire series of shows like Scrubs and Family Guy, etc. A large chunk of my music and movies. And then to top it off around 14 8disc UMD holder's full of UMD movies and TV shows. Although there were VERY few UMD television shows unfortunately. An example again would be the first 2-3 seasons of Family Guy, some Saturday night live compilations, Bevis and Butthead and Chapelle's Show. So I own about half the TV shows. But it was great and very convenient. Unfortunately it did run out / ruin my PSP battery after a few years and I had to leave it plugged in constantly. And unfortunately EVERY SINGLE PSP battery I've ever come across not made by Sony. Which are EXTREMELY hard to find. Especially over the last decade or so. Are crap and either immediately don't work out of the box. Won't charge. Or will charge and then only work a few minutes to an hour, tops. I haven't seen a reliable 3rd party PSP battery yet. Some people have gotten lucky with those but from my research and heard from others it's around 1-10%. If you're lucky. Almost all Sony batteries are dead and have been for a decade. And finding a new one is almost impossible and extremely expensive. Even an unopened official Sony battery could be dead for good and dead right out of the box. Unfortunately the PSP requires a battery to work. Even if you have it directly plugged into an outlet. So a dead battery can be useful for that and the PSP will still work. But a PSP will not work just plugged in with no battery. Just an FYI. I have around 50 games but only for when I wasn't working. I mostly used my PSP as a TV/DVD/MP4/MP3 player for almost a decade and a half. A portable DVD player will not fit in a parking booth. Or any TV or radio larger than a palm held. Which at that time in the mid and late 2,000's were your only options outside of an iPod. Which was even more expensive and had a very small amount of memory. Even low quality and condensed and converted a movie would still be 45mb to 120mb. So even a 8gb $100 ProDuo memory card or an 8gb iPod would only hold so much. Usually 10 regular length movies in low quality like 420p. Which condensed into a PSP screen didn't look horrible. A few seasons of a TV show. Or a few hundred songs. Which on an iPod you were stuck with it's internal memory it couldn't be expanded at all. Same thing for the first smart phones which were iPhones. Expandable storage and SD cards weren't really a thing until the early 2010's. Let alone a smart phone that wasn't an iPhone. with a palm held TV you were stuck with only over the air programs and couldn't pause anything. So the PSP was your best bet. It had the ability to play downloaded MP4 and M4V format files. MP3's, games and of course....UMD's. And UMD's you could have dozens and dozens of and it not take up much room and be in a small bag or book bag and basically have an entire home entertainment center in a small bag. It was great. People would just use their smart phone now and put a 500gb or 1 terabyte SD card in it or stream movies and TV off their apps like Netflix and KZbin, etc. Which I do now. But back then that wasn't an option. And UMD's were amazing for that. And they were dirt cheap even when the PSP was fairly new. You could get UMD's for $1-$10 dollars used usually. Games were fairly cheap used as well. It was a great console and in my top three favorites. Games and everything else I was using it for. I still have everything for it. I rarely use it for movies or TV anymore. With the exception of a few shows or movies I don't own on DVD or Blu-ray. But I still use it for the games. And as a PSP 2000 model I can hook it up to my television which is unfortunately the only thing I can do because of the dead battery/batteries I have. Unfortunately no one has come up with a reliable, stable battery that's quality and works 😢😡. But before smart phones. And memory was unbelievably expensive back in the 2000's. The PSP and the UMD was a must and the go to if you wanted television, movies or entertainment on the go. The iPod was there but it was just as expensive if not more for what you'd get memory wise. And couldn't play discs or videogames. The PSP could do it all. At the time it was the best and really only option for anything that just wasn't an 8gb file player. I still love it. And I still play the occasional UMD. For the time considering how prohibitive the memory and technology was. Because everyone forgets there was a time before smart phones. And the 2000's was it. And at the time the PSP and UMD's were an amazing thing.

I loved UMD Movies, I liked being able to watch movies (without worrying about a bulky portable dvd player) on road trips and even on a flight to Seattle recently. I still like to collect these mainly cause of all the fond memories I have.

Some UMD Movies are EXTREMELY collectible. I own several, and they're all anime features. The film "X" never came out on DVD in North America, UMD is the only way to get it. Also, AKIRA released on UMD.

Hi! Just catching this thread (and starting to re-build my UMD collection). Are there other movies, TV, or music UMDs that are exclusive (ie not released on other formats in the U.S.)?

The PSP really was the #1 portable entertainment device back then as it gave you the best of both worlds. The fact that it really was the only mainstream device in terms of not only playing games but also giving the portable DVD player market a seriously good run for its money in terms of excellent video playback quality alone is what set it apart. Sure UMDs didn't take off as well as Sony expected for the points you raised but there's no disputing the versatility of the PSP itself. I personally like the UMDs form factor wise as they are relatively more robust than DVDs and Blu Rays because they don't scratch or tarnish as easily...it's almost hard to scratch these if you're not deliberate. In a way they feel like a bit of a throwback to the DataPlay disks.

I have a small computer repair/build/consulting business and we decided to bull/sell/trade video games and systems. people are blown away that we will buy all things video game related no matter how old it is, little does everyone know i have been filling my house with all this stuff, i'm the biz owner btw. i bought a stack of 10 psp umd movies for like $5 for the lot, some were in perfect shape and others look like they were pulled from some dogs rear end, either way i felt so lucky seeing these out in the wild like that.

I have a few of them including, The Crow, Total Recall, Rock and Roll High School and The Endless Summer. I use to have From Dusk Till Dawn, Both Kill Bills, Terminator 2 and a few I can't remember. I am kind of kicking myself for loosing them. It was just a fun way to watch movies on the go. I don't remember any MP3 players doing video at the time when Sony was putting these out. The PSP was so incredible back then. It's still pretty great.

Just a quick reply to those who commented about watching movies on a small screen, UMD's are encoded at the same resolution as a standard DVD 720x480. You can also watch a UMD movie on an LCD TV or projector using a component cable attached to a psp 2000, 3000 model. They look and sound great too on the big screen. I know they don't have the extra's a DVD has but way cooler and much more collectable in my opinion. I also have a big DVD collection too. I'm a big Sci-Fi fan.

MJR as far as vinyl collecting is concerned have you looked into DVS (Digital Vinyl System) ? As a dj i use DVS the 2 top system to use and both reasonably priced are Traktor and Serato. I used to own over 1000+ dance records and have since moved on to DVS on my technique 1200's turntables and a DJM-900 Mixer.

I was wondering the same thing. :) I bought quite a few of these when they started dropping in price. Many of them were $5 each. I had a CFW installed on my PSP and was able to copy the UMDs to iso's and store most on a single Memory Stick. It was nice to have when I had spent time in the hospital after a back surgery.

The real reason why the UMD format is not so successful is because of two reasons. 1. Not enough studios supported the format. Only Sony Studios and a few others studios ever made movies in the UMD format and 2. probably the biggest reason the UMD is not so popular is because there is NO PORN. The VHS format became popular because of Porn and later DVDs and Blu-ray followed. I still enjoy my PSP. I wish they would continue making more movies and games in UMD

I only collect the movies I really like on UMD, so far that's only about 10. A couple of them were actually birthday gifts from back in the day. When I was in the hospital waiting on my first daughter to be born in 2005, my PSP never left my side. It was the best portable media system I owned. While my UMD collection is a bit anemic, I do appreciate dead formats in general and I have about 80 discs in my laserdisc collection. In addition to collecting movies I love, like Star Wars, Raiders, etc., I try to pick up movies on LD that I've never seen before to make the experience even more interesting for me. There's something about carving out a solid chuck of time and actually sitting down to watch a film as an event, rather than catching 20 minutes here and there on my phone or tablet, etc. Plus, I love that large-format artwork!

when your power is out what are you going to do read a book? psh no you are going to pop in your fav movie on the psp and watch til the power comes back on and its a great backup to dvds since the psp 3000 can be hooked up to a tv as a replacement to a dvd player.

Deadcoolification unkown that was another problem with UMD movies, you could only play them on a PSP, and not every model had the AV output, now if Sony had released a low cost stand alone UMD Movie player, and made the Disc cheaper I might have bought into it.

UMD Video has a special feel than compared to other kinds of media: It’s the only proper physical video that is truly portable, GBA Video I don’t count for many reasons (mostly in the video and audio quality aspect), and they’ve become extremely cheap in recent years aside from a few. I even watched an entire season of a show once on the PSP via this format, 24 got a day on there (on 8 discs no less!). Having an entire shelf just dedicated to UMD Video (and a small bit dedicated to Music) is satisfying to have on display, they’re also nice to have in a drawer next to your bed for quick access. I also cannot deny about how bloody brilliant the audio quality of these discs are. I had watched the first series of the Office and I loved the audio quality from those so much that I kept on watching (and even converted my dvd copy to the PSP’s memory card, for consistency sake) until the end of series 2. The video quality is also excellent for the low res (in comparison to our stuff nowadays) screen of the PSP. Not gonna deny of the disc case snapping issues however, as that can be a pain to look after especially when you want to keep it intact for authenticity. TL;DR- UMD Videos maybe niche, but they are very awesome to have.

i collect VHS, as for the PSP UMD movies. i have a few, i got them for when i was on a road, and i could just watch them. i still have them, and what nice is i can connect my PSP to my TV and watch them, which gives them a plus for me. Personaly i like a physical vs. a digital, but i do have digital stuff. plus i had a lot of music on my PSP. no room for movies.
