I read somewhere that part of the reason why we didn’t renew Isak’s contract was because of PSR, so our wages are very high compared to our turnover.

It’s not that wages are high. According to Swiss Ramble Newcastles wage bill is 75% of revenue which is about middle of the list for the premier league. That was 2023s books though so we’ll probably have a more accurate view when last years figures are published. We’ve spent a lot in a short amount of time so it’s the combined wages and amortisation that’s hurting us. Plus the fact that we are poor sellers. I suspect PSR is tight and if Newcastle do spend what little budget they have they’d prefer it to be on strengthening the team rather than increased wages for Isak when he’s already in contract until 2028. Providing we get CL football I expect Isak to get a new contract in the summer too though.

A lot of fans against it still so the club are hesitating in case it causes an issue. More than likely the same fans that moan that we aren’t spending or our team isn’t as good as it should be or we have a weak squad. It’s about time some fans realise just how hard a job Newcastle have over the next few years and just much of an over achievement it is for Newcastle to be top 4/5 when the ‘big 6’ have double our revenue and therefore are able to spend double what we can on players and wages. Realistically the only way we catch up to the rest in terms of revenue is by over-performing consistently for the next 5 years against teams that can spend considerably more than we can every year. Yes commercial deals will chip away and a larger stadium will help too but we need to be in the top 4 consistently every season too which is a huge ask
