From Tom's Guide: "The problem is that in SDR mode, the console renders darks at a significantly higher brightness than it should. The issue is that the PS5 uses a reduced color space when operating in SDR mode - and that could explain why the darks look particularly bad when not rendered in HDR. I actually like my PS5 with HDR off & the colors doesn't look washed out or anything. Im on a 43" 4k Television. With HDR on the picture is bland & more dark, but I have noticed the picture quality is slightly smoother with HDR on.

For some reason my ps5+tv combo makes SDR have much better contrast than HDR. Whenever I turn HDR on, everything is washed out, the screen gets really dim, and colors very under saturated. Something is wrong and I have no idea what.

Hdr gave my oled dimming problems. When I used flashy moves my lg c2 started dimming the screen. I'll stick to SDR

Yeah I have this problem, tested it out with the same game on both PS5 and PS4 Pro (I have a non hdr monitor) and with Pro the image quality was better. PS5 made the game darker. It's pretty much a deal breaker for me as I have a huge problem with crushed blacks, I just can't deal with it.

I have non hdr 1080p 43 samsung m5570 tv. Currently am playing horizon forbidden west. The game seems dark when character in stationery position. But when character moves the colour doesn't look brighter. Is there any problem with refresh rate? My tv has 3 hdmi port. One is hdmi arc, 2 normal hdmi ports. Please let me know if there's any solution.

I have a sony Bravia xr tv that is fully compatible with the ps5. The HDR causes flickering white jaggies around objects. With SDR, there is everything normal without white jaggies.

Tbh the picture on the thumbnail should be reversed. The picture where you say the game looks bad looks way better. The other just looks too bright, and the colors are just crazy bright and makes it look washed out

The way I see it is, on my oled samsung hdr looks great but on my bedroom tv that only hits about 300nits, not so good. I just think if you want hdr then you need to buy an expensive tv. I wouldn't say its essential though.

My PS5 looks fantastic on my Plasma . HDR is not what people think it is and the marketing department bumps up the colours to crayon levels in order to make you think there is a real difference to make you buy a new TV.

I can't have HDR AND 4k Res on at the same time. If i turn HDR on the PS5 goes into 1080. and when I turn Res back to 4k it turns HDR off. I'm using the HDMI cable that came with and my PS5 my Tv is a sony X900F and its set to 4k and HDR is set to "automatic, not sure what I can do..

I had this issue dude. You need to set your hdmi settings on your tv to enhanced then somewhere in your ps5 there is a setting to switch your hdmi to 2,1 or 1.1 depending on which your hdmi lead is plugged into. Sorry I'm not good at explaining but you can definitely do it.

SDR alleays looks better then HDR. HDR is a scam. Marketing pruduc that is just crap. Blacks turn into grey. Evem hdr on oled. Blacks become more grey. Alot of people think that hdr makes your blackslvls more deep and more black. People let me tell you, this is not the case. Its the other way arround. Also colors are over saturated in a way that looks so disorted! Everything gets washed out. Turn off hdr everytime. You people on youtube saying hdr is awesome. And for years I'm like the f.. . Its called marketing. Also if you look in the real world HDR doesn't even come into to play. When you look at grass when most of us has seen the grass isn't super shadows or super green. Its a natural green (dull) for alot of people but SDR brings that.

I’ve turned hdr off. With it on, my games are way too bright. I’ve even tried turning my brightness on my monitor down to 10 out of 100 and it still hurts my eyes after 15 minutes. On top of that, with hdr on any white text gets blurry or white moving images get super blurry. I’m mainly playing PS4 games on the PS5, maybe it’ll be fixed when I get some actual PS5 games.

Guys this is what worked for me. Check your cords. There’s different HDMI cords out there. With me, it because I was using a low grade HDMI cord. Once i replaced it and put the ps5 to when HDR is supported it. If fixed everything. Try it out!

The ps5 plays beautifully on y 80 inches, HDR 4K Ultra tv. I so was not expecting the games to look as beautiful as they do and real. I had no idea my television supported the new ps5 so I was stunned when we put spiderman miles morales on. Trust me having those things built in your tv and the big screen tv, you're going to be blown away. Anyone out there with older tv should bu7y a new tv.

Just to he clear. HDR in photography has nothing to do with HDR on games😂 HDR in photography is taking a underlinght and overlight exposed shot and combine them together, can be done with 1000 of sources or the same pitcuture to retreive all detail possible in light and dark spots. While HDR games its more underlayer information beying send out to your tv controlling the brightness of the pixels with its backlights or oleds. This way a real lights source emits more light real life from tour tv while on dark slots the backlights is off. On all non HDR resolutions the backlight stays static washin out dark colour and scenes and blowing up detail on fibrant colours, just like an non HDR display would do.
