Tech know-it-alls Digital Foundry are not impressed with the latest PS2 emulator on PS5 and PS4, which debuted earlier this month. It compares the experience to “someone booting up an emulator with default settings and handing you the controller”. The experts brutally conclude: “Sure, you can play the game, but wouldn't you prefer for someone who knows and loves the title in question to set it up for you just right?”
The problems are plentiful, although it all seems to stem from a purported “lack of care”. As those of you who’ve already tested out Tomb Raider Legend or Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus will attest, the number of visual filters are few - and the resolution is poor. Digital Foundry notes that “while reports of unchanged resolution vs the PS2 originals are unfounded […] it's an easy mistake to make because the output is scaled in such a way that it looks about as blurry as the original”. It adds: “It's baffling to see how slipshod the scaling is here on PS5 hardware.”
There are positives, though. While performance in Sly Cooper’s case isn’t advanced beyond the standard 30 frames-per-second of the original release, it is much more consistent overall. The ability to toggle between PAL and NTSC builds, as well as the addition of save states and rewind, also adds value beyond Sony’s previous PS2 emulation efforts.
But the bottom line here appears to be that Sony is offering the bare minimum, and you can get a much better experience with free emulators available for PC or even Android handhelds. Hopefully the platform holder is listening to the feedback, and assigns a little more budget to improve the overall experience of these classic games moving forwards.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is cooking up something pretty cool, if their latest patent is anything to go by.
Imagine this: you’re deep in the middle of an intense gaming session, you pull off a legendary clutch or beat a boss fight, pause the game, and not only capture the moment but turn it into a mini-game that your friends can play and try replicate what you did. Yep, that’s what Sony’s new patent is all about.
The patent describes a system that lets you tag specific moments during your gameplay. So, when you pause the game, you can store that exact frame and tag it with all sorts of metadata, like where you were in the game and what you were doing.
Then, the system takes that tagged moment and turns it into a video recording embedded with all your tags.
From that tagged recording, the system can generate a mini-game. This isn’t just any replay; it’s an actual playable segment of the game, allowing others to dive into the same scene you just nailed.
This could seriously shake things up for streamers and content creators. Instead of just showing off their skills, they can create challenges for their followers.
Viewers can watch the streamer’s gameplay and then jump into the same scene, trying to beat the challenge.

Emulation and backwards compatibility are 2 completely different things. Make modern playstations actually ps2/ps3 backwards compatible, and id be interested. I dont care necessarily about graphics. Gameplay and plot are far more important, hence why i rather play nfs: most wanted (2005) vs. most wanted (2012) as an example. :)

I’d be interested if Sony or Microsoft released a Xbox pc or pspc. High specs for gaming but also full pc capabilities for around $700-$800 as a premium version kinda like a pro max so they would still release traditional consoles for $500-$600. playing old games on consoles is awful, i have been playing old PC games and emulators for years at native 4k, (or even 8K) with antialiasing, bilineal filtering, and all the cool enhancements, PS1 games even have corrections for the wobbly polygons and warping textures, and looks like PC games of that era
