The example of explosive behavior is so helpful. My horse started presenting with explosive behavior last year, and it turns out he had EPM. So we treated him and he is doing wonderfully now. Fortunately he only had One explosive event on the ground and two in the saddle before I figured out that something was wrong and had him checked.

so good to have a visual record to help folk understand whats going on with pssm. sadly explosive behavior is is familiar from when i have tried to do online work with my pssm 1& pssm2 variant 3. Canter work caused him to be very tight and reactive out of character compared to when out hacking.

Thanks for making your videos. I had a PSSM , QH mare about 10 years ago. I never could get her managed with diet. Kept her on full dose of Bute and eventually that didn't even control her cramping and pain. She was euthanized at the age of 8

I will say, not all explosive behavior is caused by PSSM. Pain or fear of pain, yes. My mare was abused on the lungeline for years and years. She has PTSD from it that has taken years of work to work through. At the walk she is perfectly sane and predictable. At the trot she is about 90 percent predictable unless she's feeling her grains! But At the canter, similar to PSSM horses, she can be going fine and bolt, or rear up to pull away. This is only a lunging issue as under saddle she loves trotting and cantering. I've found that, because it's not a behavioral issue really, if she can manage to calm down without getting loose that praising her actually helps. On the lunge I actually reward bucking or weird stuff if she doesn't pull away. It has helped massively. If she does get loose, I just walk up and get her to come to me. She has no problem being caught. And it's not a whip issue either, wwhip or no whip, asking or no, doesn't matter. Though, weirdly enough, she does better with a neckrope lungeline. Not exactly sure why but she's less tense and less spooky. This, when turned into aggression or pushed too far, turns into Defensive Aggression. The anticipation of pain causes a horse to not just bolt, but to lash out. Charging, kicking, biting, or even just trampling you. The fight kicks in instead of flight.
