You can choose any paper other than ECE. But, on the safer side, take a paper which is relevant to ECE. Because, sometimes, some PSUs may check whether your GATE paper is from your discipline or at least relevant to it. How to find relevant paper? (In my opinion) A candidate may appear either in ONE or TWO subject papers. Candidates opting to appear in TWO subject papers must have primary choice of paper, which will be their default choice and the second choice of paper, which has to be chosen from the allowed combinations. Find the relevant paper from this combination. Any science UG student or graduate can write GATE. So, don't bother about your PG. Based on your UG qualification, you can write GATE. After qualifying GATE score, you can apply for PSUs. But, the recruitment in PSUs is based on their manpower requirement in your specialisation. Suppose, if you are a chemistry graduate, you have to wait for the opportunities in the respective field.
