I know how you feel, I used to enjoy playing a computer game called Living Books, and played the Tortoise and the Hare. And then I saw they had one for Green Eggs and Ham on a computer at a library I sometimes go to. I wanted to play it, but the librarian said it was meant for kids and I was too old. If only I was many years younger.

Also here in Brazil in the mid 90's, this game was known as an interactive TV game (we didn't even think it was a console game), you control Hugo with the 📞 telephone (only those with tone dialing) and being assisted by the presenter. So good childhood memories!

HoFPG Hall of First Person Games yeah because of the delays of the television transmission and the telephone lines. Today it is even worse because back in the day it was analog now all is broadcasted digitally and processed through digital converters and then to the satellite in the space and back to Earth and when you watch TV through the Internet as example it even gets worse and then there is more delay up to 30 seconds and more ! Tested by myself of watching a live TV show over an Internet stream and then watched it simultaneously over satellite and third method Cable network. Cable network has the longest delay of all of them. Remember when you hear somebody calls in a live TV show and has accidentally or on purpose not turned down the volume of his TV and then you hear the feedback of the caller's TV in the live show? All delayed as hell. So then the moderator yells please turn down the volume of your TV completely otherwise we can not understand you and vice versa!

I remember him too. I used to watch him on TV all the time as a little kid. In Croatia, he appeared in virtually every store as part of the mania, be it a snack, a T-shirt, a piggy bank, etc. Same goes for Slovenia, where Hugo was so popular, a well-known pop band known as Čuki composed a ditty about his quest to save his family. Also, I used to play his games on my old PC for fun.

Ah, the memories... I think I only managed to beat this game once back in the day. Then again, I was really young and I mostly tried to fail in order to get those hilarious cutscenes. Well... hilarious at the time at least. Apparentally you could play this on your phone back in the day, but I have no memories of such thing. I'm still happy that I found this video and brought some of those memories back. You just can't have too much nostalgia.

I think theres something charming about the art style, cute yet awkward animation, and the various jokes Hugo makes when he messes up. Hugo the Troll's franchise is from Denmark, but judging by the comments below, it was "imported" by other countries. In 2002, for example, the show was aired in countries like Colombia and Argentina, and the kids of the time were shouting "Press this key" and "press that one!". I remember having the GBC game called Hugo 2 1/2, where there were only six games (snowboarding, scuba-diving, plane, forest, ice cavern, and the wicked chess floor); I had no idea the PSX games had more mini-games, just like the ones seen on TV.

Hugo's voice is fitting in English, however it seems a little too human. I come from Denmark and used to play his games when I was little. The only thing I never liked was some of his death animations. Especially in the forest with the beer trap. That shit traumatized me for a long period.

I really vaguely remember these first Hugo games.....one of my cousins had them and I would play them sometimes when visiting their house as well as I remember seeing these being played in some of the video game related TV programs back in 90s. But it does certainly bring back some nostalgic memories, even though I really wasnt that interested in these games :D Just seeing these different levels playing played bring back memories that I just barely remember seeing them being played/playing myself before.

I remember in the early 90s seeing Hugo played over the phone on ITV’s What’s Up, Doc? show! Years later I read Official PlayStation Magazine’s review of the game and they were very negative about it! I didn’t care, I bought the game anyway and I loved it! Still have it somewhere. At least I knew that the games were originally designed to be playable using a telephone keypad!

Someone else in the comments here called it a "scam", and I can definitely see how it would be near impossible to win playing that way. Hell the game was pretty difficult even in-person with direct control and no delay..

The city in Finland where I happen to live has a video game museum where is the phone version of this game to play (Game audio comes from the phone!) among other games made in Finland. One has to wonder what it did there, since this originates from Denmark... Also, I gots a 100% save file with max possible score on Arcade version with an actual PS1 (SLES-01592 - Tanska/Suomiversio).

na verdade, o personagem hugo foi criado por uma empresa de entretenimento dinamarquesa (ITE) realmente para ser um jogo via transmissão televisiva, inicialmente. mas se tornou uma franquia com jogos lançados para psx, ps2, wii e até 2014 no iphone. estou tão surpreso quanto você.
