Overthinking has been my biggest issue throughout the years. Overthinking leads to me being anxious and when my thoughts start to get out of control, I'll be depressed afterward.

From personal perspective, if you start feeling the thoughts creep in or even flood in: Get yourself a little mini therapist you. Whenever I start feeling stressed out due to thinking too much, I make myself go through this little ‘therapy session’ where I reflect and then reply to these reflections as if they came from a close friend of mine who needs help. A small internal therapeutic moment really helps a lot, because the only person you’ll ever trust 100% is yourself. Everyone needs a friend, sometimes that friend should be you.

Today, I cried in P.E. for getting a C in a specific topic, because I grew up in a household with high expectations. Even though my dad did not care about my grade and says it’s my thing if I write a bad grade in exams, I’m still super scared of failing BECAUSE of these high expectations and overthinking. I’m writing a math exam on Friday and last time a had a panic attack and couldn’t properly breath. My math teacher knew something was wrong and we talked a lot about my family situation and mental health. And she said that she doesn’t care if I’ll have a good or a bad grade. It matters that I have to stay calm and not focus too much on the length or the difficulty of exams. Because then I can really concentrate and properly write my exams without overthinking too much.

I think you may benefit from this channel and this video specifically. How to deal with Inferiority Complex by Mark Tyrrell of Uncommon Knowledge UK: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnLOlat-pJplhZY It's about how to split facts from feelings about yourself. I suffered this a lot, and now I just accept I'm not the most wealthy, intelligent, attractive, yada yada, and I just don't *care* I'm the best me and that's all I can be. I have no choice to be otherwise! Also this one about Panic Attacks. I used to suffer those a lot myself, and now I undertand it all better, I've not had one for years. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnzRkKetpcieh5Y Furthermore if you do a search for 44 tips to boost low self esteem, you will find a site that might appear sketchy, but this chap really is a professional therapist who has learned Psychology in his own way, but isn't beholden to it to the point he dares to criticise it at times, eg the Self-Help industry and 'gurus' can be very ironically, toxic at times, and make people feel 'less than' which suits the most cynical types in the industry very well. Sample text: "Please take a moment to read this next sentence. Low self-esteem is a false perception of oneself. OK. Now please go back and read it again. Did you get that? If you have low self-esteem then you are better than you think you are. This is the definition of low self-esteem." and also "A diamond doesn't know its value to others" Good luck. Your pain sucks, mine has also been very bad. 20 years on from where it all began, I am finally becoming the person I am meant to be. The key word there is *becoming* Being your best self, happiness, and Nirvana are not a destination. They are the journey itself with correct thought, deed, and a mind that is open, yet not so far your brains fall out and you arrive at Conspirituality Paranoia.. "Seeking Nirvana is like trying to follow bird footprints in the sky" - Zen.

Overthinking had greatly impacted my life even until now. I am such a perfectionist and a people pleaser because I always think that no one will like me if I make mistakes. And if I do make mistakes, I blame and criticize myself so much to the point where all negative thoughts about myself keep spiraling inside my head and repeating itself at random times everyday. It became a bad habit of mine and I still can vividly remember what I had done wrong in the past instead of the good memories. I would also daydream about myself being perfect and admired by everyone and that would be my source of happiness even though I know it will never be real. Edit: Yeah I know my mind is messed up lol, sorry for the rant.

Its a defense mechanism autistic children create to be able to think of every possible outcome to avoid unexpected events from happening since unexpected events can rock our world. And the world is full of unexpected events. That way we feel “prepared for everything”.

@@Psych2go I'm somewhat new to your channel though this is my 'brand' account. Something I think may be helpful if you haven't done it already is a video on Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and touching on how it affects both our personal lives and society at large? Eg for Cathrine: This phenomenon can be really helpful, less so, and downright catastrophic all under this very simple concept of: "I believe X will happen. I will act in way Y, when Z happens it confirms my original belief" which can lead to virtuous spirals upwards in improving your life in big ways, small gains, less than ideal, and also very bad things like depression, teenage black Westerners internalising racist slurs about their intelligence, and so doing worse in education, or people in general *becoming* the insults they hear about themselves that sting the most, or hear most often. Or affecting intimate relationships. "My partner will *definitely* cheat on me. I'll behave in unhealthy ways. Oh my partner is distant with me. Must be cheating on me"

Jacklyn, To reduce overthinking be careful what you feed your mind. Feed trash and trash will come out. Avoid comparing yourself with others, avoid storing bottled up emotions, reduce watching negative social media-fake news channels and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breath is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress, anxiety and overthinking. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils and within the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. You can sit straight on a chair, eyes closed but avoid deep breathing. If distracted bring focus back on the breath. Never meditate with expectations but with self-awareness. Make it a lifetime habit to observe your breath before sleep, when travelling, when reading, at the workplace, in the park etc, Best wishes--Counsellor.

Some philosophical quotes that may help: "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst" - unknown, often attributed to Aurelius. I then like to add to it "But don't prepare for the worst so much you catastrophise and assume that all the worst possible things that could happen, definitely will. If despite much effort you still can't stop, well this is a great quality for someone to have for dangerous workplaces and being a Health and Safety rep" "We are more often frightened than we are hurt" - Seneca "Who is my master? He who decides what I do or do not like" - Epictetus, legendary Stoic philosopher who was born a slave and then became the most sought out greco-roman philosopher of his lifetime. "If you're going *through* hell, the best thing to do is keep going" - Sir Winston Churchill. "Be water" - Bruce Lee, which is the title of his entire Philosophy. Water is so soft, yet it rusts metal, erodes mountains and gives life all at once. "What stands in the way, becomes the way" - Marcus Aurelius. Good luck!

Some bits of Philosophy are so oft repeated they appear trite and meaningless. A popular one at the moment is "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst". Unclear origin, often attributed to Marcus Aurelius, but more likely Benjamin Disraeli. Anyway, much as Aurelius was a pampered Emperor, he really did have quite a lot of good things to say with very little I disagree with. With that one, it gives you a balanced perspective and a bit of power if you digest it appropriately. Too be too much in one extreme of irrational optimism, or overly consistent negativity, is to live in a delusion. Healthy to hope for the best, but also prepare at least a little for the worst, just not so much you catastrophise and assume that every single worst potential outcome, definitely will happen. If despite much effort and proper guidance and support you cannot stop catastrophising, well, it's a good quality for a healthy and safety rep in dangerous workplaces 😜 I'm not as nice as Psych2Go and decidedly not a fan of 'politically correct' being enforced by Thought Police. I prefer 'respectful speech as much as is practical' To me, a person who suffers from overthinking is a sign they are at least equipped with intelligence and the innoer monologue. Some people are bereft of one, the other, or even both. The latter is a curious phenomenon only recently discovered. Anyway, it's important to remember that some amount of anxiety and overthnking is... *totally normal* We are but hairless chimps who only recently descended from the trees in geological timescales. "It is fortunate that this has happened in my life, and I remain totally unharmed by it. How fortunate I am for this to happen to me, who can bear this, rather than it happen to someone who could not" -Aurelius.

After doing that i realized 2 things: 1- I was so focused on the negative that i didn’t notice all the positive stuff around me. 2- Most of the bad things were only happening in my head. I was safe. Whatever you’re going through, remember that there’s always light in the darkest places. You’re gonna find an answer to all of your worries, don’t let your thoughts tell you otherwise.

If you feel overwhelmed, it’s okay to take time off to recharge. When you find yourself alone and lost in the overthinking maze, please find something that you love to take your mind out of that loop. Talk to people you love, listen to cheerful/uplifting music, or explore a new hobby. When you’re in the flow of any creative project or hobby, it’s easier to interrupt the negative thought process. It works differently for each person. Overthinking can be really harmful to personal relationships too. Please remember that you’re enough, you’re loved, and you’re important. Thank you for this video, Psych.

I acquired these helps and habits awhile ago. I can vouch that they work - you have to commit and recommit to them, ESPECIALLY if you feel they're not helping or you backslide. It took me over 3yrs & was part of a larger self-healing. Don't beat yourself up if it takes you longer; it's part of a greater process. 🥰💕

I would like to add an “honorable mention” to the list but it’s very situational. Let’s call this one “you are not your parents”, I feel this rings true to the youngest sibling or your parents having you when they are around their 40s/50s. Older parents tend to be more precautionary compared to younger parents. While a young parent will let there child scrape their knee to develop the concept of pain. Older parents would rather explain all the consequences even more severe ones to prevent it happening in the first place. Without the experience the child is left to wonder and the mind tends to play things out worse than what they actually are. The concept of failure is hidden by a curtain of fear, when we should embrace our failures because that’s how we learn and grow through trail and error. If you decided to read this or not I hope you can pull yourself out of whatever rut you happen to be in.

I've been overthinking probably the beginning of the pandemic up until my face to face college. It's like living in a loop of doubt and fear because I kept thinking about my future, what will happen if I fail college, what if my family didn't accept me transitioning into a girl, or what if my girlfriend is purposefully ignoring me and is not interested in me anymore. I've talked to my counselors many times yet the overwhelming thoughts kept coming back to haunt me, both past and future. I want to cry because it overwhelms me and makes me feel that I might not really commit my future Sorry for the long rant. Just want to share my story

I think I’m getting to a solution here thanks. I’ve realised by your 2nd topic that it’s the concept of energies that runs me and my mind and my life. Like rn all my energy is going to overthinking and causing side effects. But what if I put this effort in my work, in my studies, in people, in new great ideas rather than this and get it in high amount, thanks for pointing this gr8 vid

Actually most of the points did fit to me. Lately I have problems with the gratitude again because of overthinking or getting pissed off when something goes not perfect plus body health things. >< And indeed it is overwhelming. I wish to feel the same as I felt a week ago when I saw the episode on psych2go called "^ 6 habits to live a happier life". Wish me luck again to heal myself back and to recie back that sudden enthusiasm. Some times it's hard to find those 3 things to be grateful for every day but I am trying *opens the gratitude journal and starts to write*

I'll try, It's a loop of never-ending negative thoughts and emotions that messes me up like overthinking of the past and then implementing those in my present and future and suddenly overthink that this would happen in my future someday but suddenly didn't. It's a baseless assumption and it's getting annoying to the point that I start hating myself and in the end overthink and get anxious and get depressed.

This is how much I overthink. Sometimes overthinking allows me to prepare for the top most worst case scenarios. But overthinking also rob me of my joy. Now I'm constantly overthinking wheather I should get rid of overthinking and leavning my ability to preparing for worst cases or endure the unhappyness by keeping it.

My biggest experience in over thinking was in building my boat. It took way longer than I think it should have. And I made more mistakes than I can count. I often avoided working on the project in anticipation of more of.my efforts going wrong. But I kept my commitment. And now the boat is built. I learned to think of my mistakes as problem solving opportunities. Like "How am I going to fix this ?".

Looking at the big picture is not always the best thing to do. It depends on the situation. Sometimes looking on only small and important details can save the day. Like when you are coming through something overwhelming. Stoics say about this and I strongly recommend this philosophy to whoever feels lost and scared of life

I feel like overthinking may be my main character flaw, to where my roomies tell me I am a master at turning mole hills into mountains, but I'm generally aware, I watch chess/sudoku videos just to see if I can figure out what the youtuber is going to do before they do it, introspection is my favorite shower activity, I look at the big picture so much my hero is where I could be in 10 years, I'm a software engineer so perfectionism doesn't exists there will always be bugs, I haven't reached my best yet, I'm generally happy and I don't just acknowledge my success but I take my little victories where I can get them (like I just added my 420th code change to my side project, totally happy to reach meme numbers!). So I feel like I check off a lot of the boxes, but I still over think 🤔

The way this was put together is nice, because the way questions are asked are in a lense that was able to work with many scenarios. E.g when thinking about the perfectionism point, I was thinking about planning the code I need to write a big project, but staying fuzzy until needed is a valid technique to get a bigger picture for your outcome.

Biggest thing that caused me to realise I'm an overthinker was when I would fail at something and beat myself up about it, I would get approached by people telling me how and why I failed and what I should do about it to succeed in the future, to which I could only respond "I know, because I already made that mistake" since my own reaction to it would be to do an in-depth analysis of my actions and see what went wrong before continuing on. They would give me a weird look and then I realised that maybe it's not normal for people to hyperfixate on their own mistakes like that and that trying to be absolutely perfect was a futile effort. Not that that helped me combat these issues that much, but I've only grown more aware of it since, partly by trying to compare myself to others and see how people normally react to these sorts of things. Obviously it isn't a healthy habit, but it's led me to figure out a lot about my more chronic mental health issues overall, thanks in part to your channel and all the wonderful advice you guys bring us FOR FREE!! I can't thank enough for all the work you do, it's really a laudable effort and one that deserves more recognition!

Yes, thoughts race through my head about how terrible I am cuz someone thinks I am. I wish I could stop having these thoughts weigh me down constantly when I am by myself -- that person isn't even there. I need to stop spending my life worrying about whether I am good enough by their standards. I never will be, never have been.
