Psychedelic therapy is about to be FDA approved: psilocybin for depression and MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Why did it take so long for FDA approval? This video covers the medical and legal history of psychedelic psychotherapy and research, from the CIA’s MKULTRA to modern clinical trials with MAPS, Compass Pathways, and the Usona Institute. It also explores current controversies, such as the potential for abuse (even in medical settings), and the future of psychedelic medicine.

I tried MDMA and 4 hits of DMT the same night. The day after i was quite clear in my mind. Fresh is one way to put it. I certainly believe psychedelics can be used as pharma.

I read an article recently where Australia has become one of the first countries to recognise psychedelics as medicine. Whilst the US has had some slow progress, fortunately many other countries are putting out good research and use.

@@TheBear710 Ah right. Perhaps I shouldn't have said slow process, but more so the US was quite behind after the war on drugs in terms of stigma and regulations. They're definitely catching up though with the FDA granting quite a lot of research in such use of drugs.

The language they've used on these clinical trials does sound very woo but I find psychedelics generally work far better when people have a positive mindset going in, and treat any difficulties in the trip as building resilience as opposed to being "bad trips" so though the idea of an inner healing voice may not be rigorous, it may be a useful framework to think of such a mental construct. It's immoral to prevent people from changing their mental state with the threat of imprisonment, and a crying shame research was stalled for decades on these drugs because, the therapeutic potential is majorly inhibited by the context these drugs pop up in having to go through black market channels, and many people are not surrounded by the right social supports or do not have the knowledge to help them to extract the most benefits and least risks possible from these drugs. They've helped me a lot but it wasn't an easy journey, with many difficult trips before I learned how to better deal with the overwhelming emotions the experiences would evoke. MDMA is considerably easier to handle than either LSD or psilocybin and it's hard to even see it being in the same psychedelic category, and it's more consistent ability to generate positive feelings towards others gives it a unique role. Hopefully the research starts to extend towards including non-serotonergic psychedelics like ibogaine and salvia as well, as their potential in addiction and analgesia may be even more profound. Thanks for the video! I first saw your videos on cerebral organoids and I've been watching since. If you want to go down a rarely studied rabbit hole perhaps the role of 5ht2a receptor agonists in immunomodulation and TNF production would be your cup of tea. There are a few odd case studies of patients with rheumatic diseases taking psychedelics and going into remission, as well as some in-vitro studies showing 5-Meo-DMT, LSD, etc drastically lowering production of inflammatory cytokines.

Not directly. But they are taking some similar steps, e.g. their Special Access Program. And the US is a leader in international drug policy, so other countries might be more willing to relax restrictions after the US sets an example. There are some other efforts going on to de-schedule psychedelics internationally, from organizations who aren't so optimistic about US drug policy. Time will tell!

@ihmcurious
@ihmcurious Жыл бұрын
While LSD was being discovered at Sandoz, a couple hundred miles away at the Dachau concentration camp Nazis were experimenting with mescaline for interrogation and mind control. This inspired similar experiments in the US. Some of this history is covered in Acid Dreams by Martin Lee & Bruce Shlain (quoted in the video) and Poisoner in Chief by Stephen Kinzer. I'll cover it in another video, after I cover some more brain news...
