Sound advice: my company I worked for of 13 years and family owned) was taken over this March by a vastly bigger corporation. The toxic pathology started from day one of the take over, with overt bullying and intimidation. Preparation before you go is key, and it is always wise to remember that once you have spoken out and defended yourself within this environment, you will be a managerial target. Corporations do not like strong, free willed souls.

Their number one goal is to follow executive leadership’s orders and make sure the company doesn’t get sued in the process. If you have a legitimate issue and you take it to them, back it up with proof, facts in writing, and witnesses, but just know they will chalk it up to a misunderstanding that should be worked out by you and the other parties. Basically, you will still be dealing with the problem for a while. Bringing awareness to the issue is just the beginning. Even the best organizations will handle issues this way because they don’t want to get sued. They also have little awareness of the psychology behind toxic work environments and the pathology of narcissism in the workplace, but even if they did have awareness, they still don’t want to deal with it.

The tutors treated me like I was there for some nefarious reason, then when I entered the job experience I was made to feel so unwelcome & uncomfortable that I had to give it up. I conducted myself with nothing but polite & professional behaviour, yet was still treated like I was there just to score phone numbers, yet I never once attempted to chat up a single female. The profession was vet nursing. I didn't care it didn't pay much, I wanted to help animals, but was made to feel like a perv. I am not some gross older bloke either. I was in my early 30's & above average in looks, well spoken, polite & respectful. At the time I had a long term girlfriend so was not interested in a single one of them anyway. It was obvious that as a male I simply was not welcome in this female dominated profession. Today I'm filing a harassment complaint with the EEOC. Tomorrow is my last day of work for a family owned business that assured me I would be safe from harassment and petty manipulation. I was harassed by an employee, told my two area managers what he had been doing and to please not leave me alone with him. One responded with a big display of solidarity with this creep the next day we all worked together. Told the day shift manager, the owner's 2 daughters, and the FOH manager. I messaged both of the owners separately that I no longer felt safe and had turned in my 2-week notice. I also requested a meeting with them. I heard nothing back, even when they came into work. They had plenty of opportunities to do a proper investigation. Harassment is hard to prove, but even if I don't win, this will send a clear message that it's their responsibility to protect their emoloyees and to train their management on sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.

Many of these comments are people literally not watching 1st half of this video and going to negotiate when they don't have a backup solution if things go south. You cannot negotiate when you cannot afford to lose. I know my boss can afford to lose, but it'd be a hefty cost. As for me, i have job orders throwing themselves at me. Are they good jobs? No absolutely not. But if push come to shove, I can always move to a bad job for a few months before finding something else better. Hiring another me, takes an avg of 6months to 2 years. I can also work for myself if I want to. Leverage is the key. You've got nothing to negotiate if you cannot lose.

Before accepting a job position, try to identify whether or not the managers and 'superstars/all stars ' have any children or any type of real family life. If the answer no, then it's not even worth trying to work with that group if you have an inkling of interest in having your own family. Also be wary of saying you are fine with working in a group like that, and then eventually starting your own family- you will quickly become ostracized and be made into an outcast. In other words we close at 5:00 but you work according to our irrational schedule, even if it means starting work at 2:00 a.m. Trust me there are many out there who treat cleaners like that. Just one example of a bad business in which abuse is rampant. And it’s the same damn people who expect you to not have a set schedule who don’t want to pay you a fair price or on time. Being a business owner is no guarantee that you’re gonna avoid the Crazies!

I made my on notes and ideas based on this, I hope it helps others in revision. How to know you're in a pathological condition If you’re forced to do things that make you weak and ashamed. If things are going mildly out of control, you need to be ready before it’s chaotically out of control. Shut up and keep your head down is a good advice but what is the cost? Is it worth it? The reason why it will worsen is no one is stepping or even trying. Step 1 deal with it Be ready to find another job, especially a better one, you may not quit or change, but knowing there’s an alternative helps. You need this as a leverage for negotiation. When deal with obstacles, prepare lateral choices. Step 2 Look out for related variables Are you weak, deceitful, lazy? Or it’s something external? If it’s problems within yourself, then you can work on it immediately, if it’s external, you need to start to talk/prepare about it before it collapses. Step 2.1 Internal Choose who you are becoming. If you continue do things that make you weak, things will not change for the better, it is difficult to change, but if you try, there is hope. The worst case of toxicity is the collapse of body and mind, and that’s a bad price to pay. Problems that aren’t solved will multiply. If you fight, you need to have a clear goal, otherwise you’re not fighting to win. You’re fighting like a drunktard, there may not be an enemy but you’re still fighting. Step 2.2 external problems On external problems, look for allies, if there are other people with the same problem, then collect evidences and together you can work something on a case. If you step up towards corruption, make sure you have things in order, otherwise you’re just becoming something you never planned.

I just started a few months ago at a job with a 4/10 schedule, thought I hit the jackpot at first. It's a state job but a bureaucracy with red tape who hire less the desirable personalities because the job security makes everyone untouchable and you can't fire bad workers. Now, I'll be honest I met some good people but I work on a crew in a group setting and I have to be around the same people all day everyday and even lunch.. I enjoyed it for a while as we built a bond it seemed at first but it was too much interaction.. I slowly started feeling suffocated by childish behavior. 3 of them were intolerable after a few months, I need my own space for even just a few hours a day, I really just want to work alone but I was forced to be connected at the hip with any personality they hired.. these guys weren't horrible work ethic necessarily but definitely micromanaging and tried to play everyone else's work as means to make them feel less confident. I chose to work hard and create more of team work than a competition between us.. it always felt like a competition and them trying to find eachothers mistakes, backbiting, gossip, hostility. . i think these types a job are super negative after a while.

I have been a facilities manager for 30 years for multifamily communities and I can tell you it's been Hell trying to stay sane especially when managing HOA's. This video should be played across the nation at every HOA community meeting in order to make the crowd understand that the on-site facilities manager is dealing with a Hell of lot of chit and just because he/she is more visible everyday doesn't mean you get to treat them like dirt. I wish I had come across this gentleman's wise words decades ago, it would have saved me a lot of grief. But eventually I came to the same conclusion. I speak up, and while I may still be polite, I make my opinion known and wear my emotions on my sleeve.

This was interesting to view, though standing up to these sort of scenarios takes more than a mere willingness to push back. You have to be very smart about it or you will be no match for a strong opponent. You need to be prepared, supported and to have an alternative if it all goes down hill fast. Be wise as serpents and gentle as doves when walking where angels fear to tread.
@MatchCard2 жыл бұрын
I think this is an under-rated comment. You have to be wise in your pushback and ensure you have support and the ability to cover for yourself if it becomes your word vs that of someone in a position of power and/or seniority. If entering into a hostile situation, try to have a neutral arbiter as a witness if possible. Do not lose your temper and try to win through smart and cunning diplomacy if possible. I am guilty of the latter. I lost my shit once or twice and it did not work in my favor.

Unfortunately in my old company i was the only one that did waht you say. I was the only one that was saying something, and escalating to higher management, and i was the most knowledgeable engineer so i was confident that the management won't come to me and try to do something... But the other engineers didn't support me. And at first the problem was one manager (the gm of the regional office) then some of the orher managers left due to the toxic environment and politics that was going on and they were replaced by people who aren't knowledgeable but loyal to the first gm who started the toxic atmosphere... and it went worse... and there were 3 cases where they set up and fired people over mistakes they were making... I couldn't do anything coz i didn't have support from sensible people who didn't want to expose themselves and say something.... I left the company 1 year ago and since then almost all the team i worked with left the company... So i think that yhe advice you are giving is precious and that is the best way to face these situations.

I worked at a school board (SD44 North Vancouver) where threats of violence for honesty and competence were so commonplace I had to resign. AFTER informing the union, management and HR. They tried to gaslight me, incriminate me in various ways, abuse me (HR especially) into submission. All the people who uttered threats are still there. Working around children. Management, HR and the union all know this. Lord help us all. The most damaging workplace I've ever encountered. And I've worked at other school boards. I left a review at Google. It was deleted. And one of the reasons I’m stepping away from a job where they brush anything that goes wrong under a carpet that is beginning to pile up higher than Mount Everest ⛰ You start to die on the inside if you stay in a work environment where complacency and mediocrity are not only tolerated, but a cause for promotion too. After abruptly quitting because of expectations that I'd just go along to get along, I reported the agency I worked for for Medicaid fraud, specifically providing services that were not just unnecessary (which they did) but which were inappropriate. Last week I got a call from the investigator wanting more information. He asked for the names of the clients where I provided the unnecessary services. I said that I didn't do it. When the mandate was just three hours of services per week whether they were helpful to the client or not, I'd just provide the necessary services and let the chips fall where they may -- though I did provide clues to look for that services were being provide when they weren't necessary including consistently going just past the time limit for the next billable unit (every phone call is at least 8 minutes so that the agency can bill for a 15 minute unit rather than sometimes phone calls being 6 or 7 minutes and thus not billable, for example). I pointed out that the tipping point for me was the mandate that I perform an intake that was outside my scope of practice, needlessly intense and stressful for the client, and duplicating another intake they'd be required to go through in another couple of weeks anyway. I gave the investigator the name of a manager who wrote an email saying that the new intake was "inappropriate" but we should do it anyway, and that there was one staff member I knew of who did complete and bill for the inappropriate service. In retrospect I should have refused to do the intake but stayed at least a few more days and downloaded copies of emails instructing me to just do the inappropriate intake. I hope they get the crap fined out of them, at least for the one case where the worker followed through on the instruction to perform and bill for a service that management knew -- and put in writing -- was inappropriate.

Many times people don't realize they don't hate the job as much as the environment. But either way . . . .There are many gurus who tell you that you shouldn't hate what you do. But does hating your job actually hurt your other planes in the physical, emotional and spiritual realm? As I told my own subscribers--yes it does. If you despise going to work that is eight hours of your day you are unhappy. Plus the getting up in the morning for it and getting back home is another two hours. Which would mean most of your day, most days of the week, most of your life--you hate doing what you do. This will affect the emotional plane and lead to the midlife crisis earlier than expected. It will drain your energy and then guess what? You stop taking care of your physical plane as well. Then your spiritual plane will fail as you see yourself as just another insignificant cog in the universe. So if that life in the high suburbs is destroying your planes my suggestion is to either laterally change careers or downsize so you can at least be content in what you do---most of your time. Hope this helps someone out there---Charles

I have worked for a company for almost 10 yrs. In the past 2 years. 2-3 co workers, we're on a different " server". Which gave them advantage to a higher income. When @ first brought up by numerous employees. They acted like they knew nothing about it or it's not true. Once they realized they would lose the rest of the employees. They gave. Us others a certain amount/ pay wise structure. Otherwise all but 2 we're going to leave. Still 2.5 years. It's not really Gotten better just more slicker in doing it(once the dust settled). I'm not blind it's definitely going on. Still happening. Down to 6 of us. Fighting to get by. I'm planning an exit. If you say something they'll punish you by giving you the minimum, which most of us are great full . Just would've nice to make more. However, they act like it's not true it's evident what has been happening. It's not like we have a nice week. The next week we go in and not fight for a bigger pay week. No not correct @ all. No no no it's not true. They'd like you to believe it. Or they say it's the luck of the calls no it's not. Not normal. I will find another place that'll appreciate my dedication, hard work, dependable self, on time...team player, honest. And Reliable , down the road self respect is everything. I just wanted to prepare. Not let my family down. The worst part we asked, what was the reason the two-3 employees were selected, other than us others. No reason, just that's what upper management chose. I can't take that answer. For several reasons. I personally never missed work , ever, never late, always early. On time ECT ECT. Most of us were on point with the 2-3 ones picked. I figured favoritism, or company snitches or had something on 2 of the 3 different managers. It really doesn't matter. It's rude & , uncalled for and as I stated I'm staying quiet, staying focused, and I stay in my own lane, I do my job 150% on point and some. For my job security. Again, Elvis is about to leave the building once I secure another job !!!!! Had enough. It's overwhelming, disrespectful and just some Malarkey! Karma is a BI_CH! What goes around comes around. "Arguing is better than fighting... unless you want to fight." Not true. Sometimes, you don't want to fight. Sometimes, you WANT to do anything to avoid the fight. But sometimes you NEED to fight, and arguing is only delaying the inevitable.
@flippaton4 жыл бұрын
yep i agree, to get some respect expecially on the working roles
@ChristnThms4 жыл бұрын
@Sammy2629 so... you've never been in a fight I guess. The guy who keeps arguing, once the fight is inevitable, is the guy whose ass is about to be stomped. It's not even that he can't win, but that he doesn't have the will to win, if he's still trying to talk after he realizes that violence is on the way. As soon as you realize that violence is inevitable, there are only two options which could be called optimal: swing first or run away. Everything else is just signaling that you're either an idiot or a punk, or possibly both. The other guy isn't confused.
@ChristnThms4 жыл бұрын
@Sammy2629 an absolute statement IS wrong, if there is another equally correct statement. If his statement was "sometimes it's better to argue than fight" I'd have agreed completely. His statement had no qualification to it though, meaning that arguing is ALWAYS better than fighting. This is absolutely untrue. Sometimes, the fight is inevitable, and attempting to delay it only invites disaster. But, let's even look at a scenario where the fight is NOT inevitable. Let's look at WWII. If we had stayed in the "argument" phase with Germany, it would have allowed them to rampage across Europe, costing untold thousands or even millions of additional deaths. Now, it is true that we may have been able to argue our way into a lasting truce with Germany, and thus have avoided the our involvement in the fight. But I don't think anyone would suggest that to be any sort of victory. There are plenty of times that fighting is the right, and best thing to do. Any stance that says that you shouldn't fight, or that other options are intrinsically better than the fight, are ALWAY 100% wrong. Oddly enough, Peterson even gets into this in a different lecture, about kids and especially boys establishing boundaries and limits through childhood roughhousing and violence. He puts forth that only because they've been in fights, do these kids understand the reality of violence, and thus have the restraint to avoid it. But, if the threat of violence weren't real, then there's no reason to negotiate or compromise with the other side. So, not only is violence sometimes the best options, but it HAS to remain a realistic option, in order for there to be a motivation for peace.
@ChristnThms4 жыл бұрын
@Sammy2629 nope. Once again, all you're doing is encouraging cowardice, which leads only to a ass whooping a bit later. Even if you're inevitably going to be on the losing side, getting it over early is never worse and often better than delaying. In the case of the 2 dads fighting, if it were avoidable, then it wouldn't have happened. Period. You don't get to pick someone else's behavior, only your own. If you know the fight is coming, and you choose to keep talking, you have avoided nothing. It's still coming. To say otherwise is just ignoring what the word "inevitable" means. You also completely ignore the part where some things are simply worth fighting over, and remaining in the "arguing" phase is completely immoral and cowardly. Now, clearly, I'm not advocating violence as a first action. But I will say, as an absolute, that any philosophy which says that violence is always wrong is all three: incorrect, immoral, and doomed to be destroyed.
@ChristnThms4 жыл бұрын
@Sammy2629 it's funny how many words you use to contradict yourself. When you make the statement that "arguing is better than fighting" without a qualifier before or after it, you're wrong. Period. For all the reasons I've stated, it is absolutely wrong. You even admit as much, and then circle right back around to making absolute statements, which are wrong again. I think that if you could get past that, you might make sense. But you're hung up on that incorrect absolute statement, and in that you cannot be anything except wrong.

There is a huge problem with moving on to the next job workplace, we seem to think that the next workplace won't also have similar issues, workplace bullies are Narcassists sociopaths such people are on the rise, because they lack empathy and they are excellent liars expecially good at conning HR managers everywhere into believing they are the Right person to he hired there, thats how these creeps get in by conning managers and anyone neccasarry for there advancement unfortunately there is no way of knowing if the workplace your persuring is going to be any better than the one your escaping now, I mean seriously is there any questions one could ask during and interview to get a clue here? Its a problem, you leave one toxic workplace just to jump to toxic workplace number 2 or 3 and so forth.

WELL SAID... But pathological stuff still goes on by entitled pathological people. They actually feel if they are not pathological then they are not doing their job.... Here is the thing to... sometimes you can tell a new guy the truth and it seems to him like you are being very pathological towards him... it is crazy systematic human behavior. The veteran employees feel the new guy could steal their job and the new guy gets "messed" with by some devious people...

That’s why it’s best to not seem a threat but sometimes you can’t help it cause people study you they see how people react to you they allow you to be destroyed on the site in everyway to protect their job even if you never wanted it
