The Rats maze study 1. Has this study been confirmed by being reproduced by others? 2. Was the method used subjective [students felt a rat did better] or objective [rats were accurately timed using a stop watch or similar device]. 3. What was the performance difference between the groups? Even if the rats were selected randomly one would expect some group differences rather than both groups being identical. If one group averaged 20.3 seconds to run the maze and the other took 20.4 then the 1st group did better, but only by 0.1 second. Teacher Expectations 1. Has this study been confirmed by being reproduced by others? 2. What was the performance difference between the groups? Even if the students were selected randomly one would expect some group differences rather than both groups being identical. If the spurters score 98.7 and the others score 98.6, then the spurters did score better, but only by a miniscule amount. 3. Why did the teachers not get suspicious of how the "spurters' were identified. An intelligent person would probably have questioned this "spurter" phenomenon. 4. As far as allocating resources, it is been my experience as a taxpayer and interested observer that the most effort is given toward the students who are at the lower end of achievement. The results show that this effort is mostly wasted. And if the bottom level performers were to improve, that would just put other students at the bottom. Playing that game is just a con. There will always be top, middle, and bottom performers, unless all students start performing the same. Think about it....if you could improve every student's performance by say 30%,, the ones at the bottom will still be at the bottom, and the ones at the top will still be at the top. The bottom line….you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. QED

(You've just reminded me of a song by 'The Little Willies' ft Norah Jones re: Baltimore). Thank you. 🙂
