What’s crazy about this is this dog is teaching you as well. He is helping you brain to recognize what your doing and helping you put in place your own stops by having it reinforced by another being. He’s literally teaching you how to cope naturally, so that even without him your brain will be trained to deal better. Dogs are great aren’t they?

Beautifully Done!! To see U behave as I do, during an Episode? How Incredibly comforting to know, there's other helping options! Where as,"Pop a Pill"(wait 6 weeks only to learn, it isn't working). Mental Illness from the start, isn't Ur True Self. Add Medication, & more of U is Molded by Chemicals. And lastly, the Side effects. Powerful enough to Stop taking a Medication that's Helping, because of the Horrible Side effects. ThankU for taking the time to "Share Ur Victory"! There's so little known about Mental Illness. Every Day, U fight against a Demon. Some days are Empty & Exausting..& then? Some times ("A Video") comes to U, delivering with it.."A GOOD NEWS DAY"!

My pup quickly learned when I was faking. Thankfully, he took to these duties quite naturally so I was told I should just encourage him. I have found that severe pain can come across as anxiety as he also heard it in my voice and smells it as well. This can be frustrating for him however as he can't stop my pain & can get upset when he can't do his job well. He also assists with other health issues and has saved my life twice. Dogs are amazing creatures and I'm so thankful for them ❤️

Having a service dog and a pet dog can be complicated and can cause some problems. The little dog appears to be having anxiety and confusion over watching you train and reward your service dog with affection. The little dog’s ears keep going back and shows a bit of freezing at 0:58 and each time shown in the video. You push the little dog away with your foot and sounds like you say “move” as if maybe the little dog is an inconvenience while giving so much attention and affection to your service dog. Dogs communicate most through body language, so pushing the little dog away with the negative “move” speaks very loudly and unfairly to the little dog that he/she is unwanted while the other dog is deeply wanted. I recommend putting the little dog in a nice, quiet, comfy and safe place (possibly with music or tv on so he/she can’t hear all that’s being missed out on) when training with your service dog. After service dog training sessions, be sure to give the little dog lots of quality time too. Since you do so well with training your service dog, giving the little dog some basic obedience training would benefit you all too. If not, then confusion, anxiety and any kind of poor feelings can cause a lot of problems for both dogs, and yourself in getting proper help from your service dog. It can cause problems between both dogs too which then can be a distraction for the service dog. Hope this helps. Best of luck. ❤

@@davidbanks159 it’s a possibility! Service dogs do not “replace” medication necessarily, even with Daryl I still need medication to function. This may not be true for you though a service dog could be a great tool, just know they’re not for everyone so be sure to talk to your doctors to see it one may benefit you!

They absolutely can stop that behavior! I have a six pound Yorkie that started to alert, and disrupt my picking and chewing cuticles. I have extreme anxiety disorder, and severe panic attacks to the point of passing out. I am in constant agonizing pain, due to medical several medical conditions. The higher the pain the more anxiety, and I would chew my cuticles bloody. Because of Phoebe, my fingers look the best they have ever looked, and my doctor even commented on it. I have since worked with Phoebe, and she is fully trained as my service dog. My last service dog was a Doberman. The only drawback to having a six pound Yorkie as a service dog, is that I am constantly having to ask people to please don't talk to, try to pet, or otherwise distract her. I've also encountered people, including other people with service dogs, who want to argue that she is not a trained service dog. Due to her small size, she has to be placed in the seat of the shopping cart, in order to be able to alert, feet on my chest, laying on my shoulder, or licking my face, depending on how my anxiety builds. There are still days that I just can't face going out in about crowd, but Phoebe has definitely changed my life for the better! I wish you he best of luck finding the perfect canine companion!

crusty mac and cheese what I did with Daryl was first teach the behavior I wanted him to do, in my case that was to put his paws on my lap, once he knew that I would start breathing quickly and then ask for the behavior. After doing that a lot he started to associate heavy breathing with that behavior and I would heavily reward when he responded on his own!

I dissociate almost every time I go out; it’s like a different type of panick attack that I experience where I feel confused, and kind of feel like I’m not even apart of my body, just like watching. And it has never once not disrupted me when I go out. Would a service dogs be able help with that? Or any of this?- (I was diagnosed with social and general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, depression, and sensory processing disorder)
@daryltheservicedog4557
@daryltheservicedog4557 4 жыл бұрын
It depends! You have very similar diagnosis to me but that doesn’t mean we’d benefit from the same treatment. A service dog definitely could help but they’re not for everyone. I would talk about this with a doctor/psychologist to see if this may be a good option for you! Service dogs are a lot of work, most people only see the good parts but it’s a lot of work as a disabled person to keep up with the dogs needs/training. Also not everyone can handle the public attention and questions that come from having a dog in not pet friendly places. The benefits outweigh the negatives for me but you’d have to see if it would be feasible for you!

I would find a reputable trainer who has experience training service dogs to help you out! Alerting before something happens is not something every dog can do unless there are visual or auditory signs it’s going to happen, it would have to be a natural alert that you heavily reward. I received Daryl through an amazing organization called heeling house. He was not fully trained when I took him home and I finished his training through classes at heeling house and with their advice and support. I would say I definitely recommend having a trainer you can go to periodically to give you tips and answer any questions/help you problem solve. It is very hard to do 100% on your own and I wouldn’t recommend that but you can see a trainer as often or as infrequently as you’d like!

My advice would be to contact a reputable trainer who has experience in training service dogs! There’s a lot more that goes into being a service dog then just being able to do the tasks, so I would say the first step would be to get your dog evaluated by a trainer to see if they would be a good fit for the job! Good luck!

I’m curious how exactly were you able to get your service dog? Cause I have a paper from my therapist saying I’m able to get one because of the seizures and the constant anxiety attacks and other stuff I have but I just still haven’t figured out how it would work. I just turned 18 and recently had a massive panic attack at my high school graduation in front of a lot of people. And it’s public to the internet which is so terrible for me. Cause I hate that type of attention. My therapist thinks it would be a good idea for me to have a service dog since my seizures are related to my anxiety and stress and that’s probably really bad but I just gotta live with it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

@@markc.7984 there are lots of organizations that provide service dogs free of charge! The only negative is they typically have a much longer waiting list. I’d start by looking on assistance dogs international’s website to look for a reputable organization near you! Keep in mind though even if the initial cost of the dog isn’t much you still need to be able to afford them the rest of their lives which can get very expensive, something to consider!

I know this is very late response but I wanna ask (THIS IS NOT MENT IN A RUDE WAY SO SO SO SORRY!!! IF IT SOUNDS LIKE IT!!!) Did your doctor or Therapist give you a prescription for the eligibility to get a service dog? I was wondering because I have horrible anxiety and panic attacks that get trigger very easily like the following: pressured question/Situations (like going to school to awnser questions or even walking in) Going to public places(This gets me really nervous) Social anxiety(Like Talking to people, being near people, and getting random comments in public) Asking simple questions(for example, Asking to use the restroom in school,Getting up to get a refill of my drink in open food places, And even asking to get food to my Mom!) Thats mostly important to know/Consider thanks you to read this! Please awnser if you can or anyone that knows :)

Daryl loves sitting on my lap so it wasn’t too hard. I would start on an easier surface like a couch with more room and work up to a chair. First you have to add a name to jumping on your lap so you can ask for it then pair it with wherever behavior you want her to respond like that too by doing the behavior, asking for her to get on your lap, and reward!

If the handler is showing signs of anxiety/panic attacks while standing, what would the dog do then? Because in all the clips I've been seeing, the person is sitting or laying down. Also I've been thinking about training a dog to be a psychiatric service dog, I understand that the animal must pass a Public Access Test, but how would I go about doing so? What companies are able to test a dog for this?
@daryltheservicedog4557

Good question! When I’m standing Daryl will jump up to put his paws on me until I sit down so he can do his thing :) if you’re in the US then legally there’s no test they actually have to pass. The public access test is a good thing for you to do with your dog on your own or with a trainer as a way to see if your dog has the necessary skills to do pa! If you’re in a different country I’m not sure of the laws

I've been struggling with PTSD but I don't have a service dog because I'm determined to return back to duty and I probably couldn't have one because of that, but its interesting to see how they help. How does your dog determine the difference between a regular itch and when you start getting really anxious?

Not sure if your lifestyle allows it long term, but I wonder if having a PSD short term would help your nervous system recognize triggers and onset of symptoms and lessen the PTSD reaction over time? Either way, wishing you support and recovery!

@@samanthalodgebewellandwand3604 I think it would really help a lot because I can't walk down an aisle in a store if there's other people in it, or if it was clear before and I got halfway and another person starts walking in, I can't continue down that aisle I have to turn around and get out of there. Even my partners can't calm me down, I feel like I have to get away from them, and that sucks a lot because they were like brothers to me. Sometimes I just can't calm down, the combat breathing doesn't work, and even sitting outside doesn't work. The problem is, I might be going back to duty very soon, and I don't think the fire chief will allow me to take that PSD with me to the firehouse and even if he did, then what would happen when those tones drop and we got to go? That dog can't come on the ambo with us. Sometimes when we get one call, we get another call on the way back to the firehouse. Sometimes that happens 2 or3 times in a row. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

@@theww2girl141 I completely understand - you’re not alone, and whatever you need in that moment is totally valid and okay. Maybe part of specially training a PSD for your needs could include reaction to a fire alarm by going inside their crate or something like that. There is no such thing as a certification for a service dog in the US. I do not know the laws in other countries though. In the US if your dog is public access trained (the ADI public access test is a great way to measure that) and provides multiple tasks to mitigate a disability (comfort does not count as a task) then the dog is legally a service dog

I would recommend finding a reputable trainer who has experience training service dogs! It would be super helpful to get your dog evaluated to see if service work is a good fit for him/her as there is a lot that goes into being a service dog and it’s not right for every dog! Once you find out if your dog is a good fit, you and your trainer can start working on public access behaviors and task training! Good luck I hope everything works out!

He is a mutt so I’m not really sure what he is! I would definitely recommend either a golden retriever or a lab they are the most common service dog breeds for a reason. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend a mutt since there’s a much bigger chance of washing, Daryl just happened to have the right temperament. Getting a golden or lab from a reputable breeder who has a history of successful sd would give you the best chance of success unless you’d rather go w a program, as long as it’s a good one you’ll get the right dog!
