I don’t know what either of them mean by “all personality types are fit for practicing psychiatry”, but it is definitely NOT the case that just anyone should be practicing psychiatry or psychotherapy. Verbal engagement with routine and prescribed questions isn’t difficult, but the ability to perceive subtleties and nuances in brief engagements is a critical skill which some people will sadly never have.

I think she’s trying to say that many personality types can be suitable for psychiatry since each brings something to the table. The skill of emotional intelligence is something that is often selected for even at the premed level when applying to medical schools. It is also further honed throughout medical school and residency training.

honestly wouldnt recommend it, its not what they portray in the media and in books really. only when you have and friends or family warded with them before you will see the full extent of what they do and the dark side of psychiatry. its quite de- humanising for the patients and they do not treat the patient with any human rights whatsoever.

@Adnan A Psychiatry is the career that I am most interested in. I’m just not sure that I want to go to school for that long though lol. For the first four years before medical school what would you recommend majoring in? I thought that chemistry would be best, but I’m not sure.

Matthew Knopf Maybe you can try shadowing a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist, a counselor, a psychology PhD and related fields to figure out if there’s any aspect you like in psychiatry that resonates with you the most that you can find in another field (like maybe you like counseling people the most or maybe what you like most about psychiatry is learning psychology, so you could focus on those things). I think if you’re 100% sure psychiatry is what you want to do then the sacrifice will be worth it. It’s a few years of pain for a lifetime of the career you’re passionate about. Psych has less training than many other specialties and is on the easier side to get in as well, so that might also make it easier for you. I think a subject that you really like would be the best as long as you get your premed reqs down. This would make your college experience better and would be more unique to you/your story (which helps when applying and interviewing at med schools but also makes you more well rounded as a clinician). If you’re trying to find a major with the most crossover, I’d say something like physiology since that covers the basis of all the organ systems you need to know in med school. We don’t do much raw chem besides some biochemistry and that’s little compared to everything else you need to know.

@Adnan A Thank you! I’ll try and keep this in mind when deciding for college. I also do not want to deal with the student loans that I will have to make though. My dad is a biology professor at the college I’m going to though, so my tuition will cost less.

If you do decide you want to go into medicine and finances make it difficult, there are ways to finance med school in the US like working in underserved areas, Kaiser's primary care signing bonus, military scholarships, and more. Saving money in undergrad is a great idea. I wish I went to a community college instead of a bigger university for four years. Regardless of where you end up, I'm sure you'll do well. I don't think I was planning so far ahead when I was 15, props.

Regarding board certification: it depends on the location you want to practice. In Miami, the job scouts could only find me a job of if I was board certified. Of note: that was for urgent care, not psychiatry.

I'm definitely late to the ball game on this video, but I'm currently in my spring semester of my sophomore year. I'm finishing up O-chem, and my GPA is around a 3.32. I'm terrified that I won't get into medical school because of these classes, but Psychiatry is everything I have ever wanted to do.

At first I wanted to be a scientist from the age of 5 then a biologist as there is lots of mixing chemicals which I like then I wanted to be a geologist as I had a passion of rocks and minerals but now I think psychiatrist as I am good at chemistry and maths I enjoy those subjects a lot and helping people with mental health along as there is chemistry involved I am down! I have a question, though, not very related to the video theme per se: do you think being a polyglot (or knowing a language common to a certain community) is helpful in psychiatry? For example, to interview a patient whose primary language is Spanish in opposition to doing so in English.

Thank you! I’m happy you found it motivating. Knowing multiple languages, especially if they’re commonly spoken languages, is always helpful in connecting with patients and even increasing your job opportunities and income. Languages like Spanish are extra useful if your patients or your practice is in California, Texas, etc (if you’re from America). There have been many times where my patients have only spoken Spanish and knowing some Spanish came in handy.

I’m not good in math or chemistry , I’ve always been good in humanities so I am scared to fail in medical school but I do want to become a psychiatrist so I don’t know what to do.

I’m not sure where you’re at in the process, but there isn’t a lot of high level math or chemistry in med school, fortunately! If you take premed classes you can get an idea of if you can handle med school, but most of med school is physiology, with some other things thrown in (genetics, immunology, microbiology, a little stats, etc). I think a lot of premed classes, even, are way more than you need in med school in regards to those subjects (like you almost never use ochem, you barely do any chemistry, math is simple calculations, etc)

Giovanna Ochoa No problem! Postbaccs are usually to fix things you’re weak in like a low gpa. If you really like psychology, you could just major in that and take premed reqs and other med related classes outside your major requirements. If you haven’t already looked into clinical psychology, that could be a good option for you too. I’d recommend you figure out what you really want to do (clinical psychology vs psychiatry vs another route since you seem to be passionate about psych), and then go from there. If youre 100% sure you want to be a psychiatrist, then you could consider what I said above. Clinical psychology is a PhD program I believe, and other related professions will have their own requirements. We don’t have tests on animals, but we do have to know things like animal hosts/vectors for different microbes (very limited animal knowledge vs vets who focus on animal medicine).

Sunday Ocheni Thank you! I’m not sure if she grew up in Britain, but I believe she did her medical training (including residency/fellowship) in California. I’ve heard if you want to practice as a board certified physician in the US you’d need to take the USMLE board exams (step 1, 2, etc) as well as apply for and complete residency training (and specific certification exam) here, which can be a long and difficult journey, unfortunately. However, there are a good amount of doctors from around the world that do so.

She undermines the amount of education needed to become a clinical psychologist. After college, you need to go into a PhD program in clinical psychology which typically takes around 5-7 years which is actually much longer than medical school.

Knowing her, that wasn’t her intention at all. Medical school is 4 years after college, but psychiatry residency is 4 years, and specialty (fellowship) training is extra, which means psychiatrists will have 8-10 years of graduate training. I appreciate your civil disagreement, however.

Correction: after talking with Dr. Pia about this, I was mistaken, and psychiatrists are formally trained even longer than I mentioned: “Adult psychiatry residency: 4 years after med school graduation Child psychiatry residency: 4 years adult psychiatry plus 2 years child psychiatry (6 years) or you can decide early that you want child and do 3 years adult psych and 2 years child fellowship (5 years) Forensic specialization and others have different amounts of time, but usually are added on to the 4 years of psychiatry residency. So MINIMUM is four years of adult residency. All the other options take years more.”

My story: I'm 26, I try to live healthy, eat good, I'm 5'2, 102 pounds. I suffer with chronic pain, fatigue, sky high blood pressure, short of breath. I've had blood test after blood test (normal.) except inflammation blood test. A CT scan showed "Deterioration of joints." I was diagnosed with Degenerative Osteo Arthritis. By a Rheumatologist. I also have an eye condition called ROP that destorts my vision at times. Living in chronic pain has uprooted my life, my job is hanging by a thread due to my inability to keep up. I get depressed and anxious I worry about being homeless. I'm scared. I seen a psychiatrist today. He was really nice to me and empathetic. He pulled up all my medical documents. He told me that's a good idea to apply for social security disability because of my arthritis at such a young age. He doesn't work for them, Hes just a regular psychiatrist. I'm at a loss. Coping is overwhelming.

Adnan A Thanks so much!!! That is so sweet of you. I do the best I can with the situation I'm in. My doctors are trying to make me comfortable on medications, although I have break through pain and emotional distress. I volunteer in my community, I like to help people at food pantries and at the humane society I hold the kittens & give the puppies company. Animals are great therapy. My heart melts when a kitten purrs in my arms or a dog wags his tail when he sees me. I have a fur baby in my apartment. A 1 year old cat. I love her so much. Hope you're doing well.

Adnan A Yes i agree with you. I try to keep busy. I am even in college. However, I had to take medical leave from work due to constantly having to clock out to go home. I almost lost my job but the medical leave saved it. Now I'm back at work but I'm struggling to keep up and my manager is getting irritated. I pulled out for the semester in college. I hope to start back in January. I never thought I'd be this young living the degenerative arthritis. I never thought it even affected people like this. It's a completely painful flares.

One thing I keep hearing is that psych also has a risk with receiving violence which is more than the overall average in the medical field. And that it may hence not be suitable for women. Things are specially hard in deaddiction clinics and while dealing with schizophrenia. As a woman herself I was hoping she would address those concerns too. Because honestly I've always wanted to study the human brain. So neuro/psych was always in my plan. But hearing all this has made me falter in my decisions. Are these things one should be concerned about and if so how should one deal with it?

I don’t know the stats, but you will have training on how to reduce the likelihood of violence, de escalating situations, etc, and you will have security and other assistance in environments that are risky. I don’t think it is unsuitable for women. There are lots of great female psychiatrists who do well in all areas of psych. I think if you’re passionate about psychiatry, don’t let any worries hold you back. There are plenty of other women who thrive in psychiatry, and there are security guards and other techniques and resources that you can use to reduce the risk of and avoid unfavorable situations like violence.

Bhavya Pundir Thank you! The interquartile range that matched in 2018 was about 215-235, so some students got in with less and some with more. However, psych is getting more competitive, so I’d recommend shooting for the upper end of that range if you can.

There is growing overlap so it can be difficult. I’d recommend trying to shadow if you can, and research more on each of the specialties (like you’re doing now). I’ll be releasing a neurology interview in a bit! Modern day psych ends up being a lot more management of psych issues like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc (often with drugs) whereas neurology is more migraines, seizures, strokes, etc. I’d say whatever cases/areas of medicine you like more would be a safe bet. Also realize that since you’re so young, you don’t have to commit 100% yet. You have time to decide, so dont worry too much.
